Insights into the Medial Pectoral Nerve Transfer for Shoulder Abduction in Brachial Plexus Injuries: A Retrospective Case Series Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Treatment priority in C5, C6, and C7 brachial plexus root avulsion is the recovery of shoulder function through reinnervation of shoulder muscles. The medial pectoral nerve is a potential donor for axillary nerve transfer, but outcomes are sparsely reported. This study reports the results of medial pectoral nerve transfer to the axillary nerve. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 12 patients with traumatic brachial plexus injury (C5, C6, and C7 root avulsion) who underwent medial pectoral nerve transfer to the axillary nerve. Sociodemographic and clinical characteris

A small number of daily pitches induces shoulder and elbow injuries among high school baseball pitchers: a prospective study.

Baseball players frequently injure their shoulders and elbows. Preseason risk factors for such injuries have been relatively well studied, but in-season risk factors are less known, and the relationship between the number of pitches and the incidence of such injuries in baseball pitchers of any level is unclear. Identifying the risk factors related to the number of daily pitches is particularly important to prevent baseball-related arm injuries among young pitchers. Thus, we prospectively investigated the relationship between the number of daily full-power pitches in high school baseball pitch

Do Professional Baseball Players With a Higher Valgus Carrying Angle Have an Increased Risk of Shoulder and Elbow Injuries?

BACKGROUND: There are many risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries in professional baseball pitchers. The elbow carrying angle has not been studied as a potential risk factor. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this study was to determine whether elbow carrying angle is a risk factor for shoulder or elbow injuries in professional baseball pitchers. We hypothesized that pitchers with a higher elbow carrying angle would be less likely to sustain an injury during the season than pitchers with a lower elbow carrying angle. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: All professi

Surgical Treatment of Infantile Shoulder Dislocation Following Brachial Plexus Birth Injury.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral dysplasia following brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) can present as dislocation of the glenohumeral joint in infancy. Multiple nonoperative treatment strategies have been reported for these early dislocations, yet none are universally successful; thus, surgical treatment may be required. However, reports of surgical treatment in infancy are scarce. The present study retrospectively reviews the outcomes of patients with BPBI treated surgically for glenohumeral dislocation under 1 year of age. METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for patients treate

Changes in Shoulder Rotation Based on Elevation in Children With Brachial Plexus Birth Injury.

PURPOSE: Lack of shoulder external rotation is common in children with brachial plexus birth injuries. Development of glenohumeral (GH) dysplasia is associated with progressive loss of passive external rotation. Some authors recommend measuring external rotation with the arm adducted, whereas others recommend measurement with the arm in 90° of abduction. The purpose of this study was to compare active and passive external rotation and internal rotation measured in adduction versus abduction. METHODS: Fifteen children with brachial plexus birth injuries held their affected arms in maximal exte

Kinesiotaping for Acute Pain Due to Uncomplicated Traumatic Injury of the Shoulder or Chest Wall.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic injuries of the shoulder or chest wall are commonly treated in the Emergency Department (ED). A complementary treatment is kinesiotaping, an elastic tape often used to treat musculoskeletal dysfunction and pain. However, the added pain-reducing effect of kinesiotape in comparison to standard conservative treatment is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of kinesiotaping on pain relief compared to standard treatment with pain medication and immobilization in patients with uncomplicated traumatic injury of the shoulder or chest wall in the ED. Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) after COVID-19 vaccination.

OBJECTIVE: The global fight against COVID-19 has required mass vaccination clinics as well as mass recruitment of personnel, including many who may not regularly administer intramuscular deltoid immunizations, potentially increasing the incidence of improper intramuscular injection. Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a well-described, preventable injury resulting from improper injection into anatomic structures adjacent to the deltoid muscle leading to mechanical and chemical trauma augmented by an inflammatory immune response to the vaccine and/or adjuvants. SIRVA is
