Management of wrist arthritis may involve many options, including motion preserving and motion sacrificing procedures. Total wrist arthrodesis is often considered the gold standard for severe wrist arthritis, failing non-operative management. We present the first case to our knowledge of total wrist arthroplasty (TWA) for patient with rheumatoid arthritis who is also deaf, requiring sign language for communication with excellent results.

The story of the ethical controversy over cochlear implants is unique in some ways and paradigmatic in others. It is unique in the ways that it was shaped by the history of deafness, and of cultural responses to deafness, in the United States. The story is paradigmatic in two ways. First, cochlear implantation was an innovative therapy that was introduced into practice without adequate study. Promising early trials led to FDA approval, although long-term outcome data from rigorous studies were lacking. In this respect, the story of cochlear implants is similar to the history of other innovatio

Speakers generally outperform signers when asked to recall a list of unrelated verbal items. This phenomenon is well established, but its source has remained unclear. In this study, we evaluate the relative contribution of the three main processing stages of short-term memory--perception, encoding, and recall--in this effect. The present study factorially manipulates whether American Sign Language (ASL) or English is used for perception, memory encoding, and recall in hearing ASL-English bilinguals. Results indicate that using ASL during both perception and encoding contributes to the serial s

With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), increasing numbers of interpreters for the deaf are being employed in education, industry, or other settings. Professional interpreters are at risk for developing cumulative trauma disorders due to the nature of their work which involves rapid repetitive movements of the arms and hands. One hundred forty-five interpreters for the deaf responded to a survey questionnaire designed to identify their work experiences and development of physical pain/discomfort related to work. Incidence and duration of pain/discomfort is positively cor

A review of the literature about communication between health care professionals and deaf people demonstrates that a continuum of accuracy in perceptions of deaf people and their communication problems exists in health care settings. The author provides information on deaf culture, history, population size, sign language, and communication needs that is used to evaluate professional journal articles. Examples of research on this topic are presented and the need for further studies and the role of social workers are discussed.

Visual expertise arises when habitual exposure to specific stimuli shapes attentional allocation and eye-movement patterns. Such adaptations can sometimes extend beyond their domain of acquisition, as shown in studies of trained populations. However, less is known about perceptual skill transfer that could emerge from lived experience rather than deliberate practice, as in the case of early deafness combined with sign language mastery. We addressed this question by recording the eye movements of 30 Deaf fluent users of Austrian Sign Language viewing Old Master narrative paintings. We then comp

INTRODUCTION: This article suggests ways in which a cultural sign language frame for use by and with people with congenital deafblindness might be supported. It proposes including an approach to tactile signing informed by insights from the protactile movement, which grew out of attempts to rework the visual nature of American Sign Language, thereby creating a new tactile language. Protactile language represents a profound commitment to a co-constructive, participatory and enactive form of tactile languaging that goes far beyond improved access to cultural linguistic signs and signing in the t

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the degree to which children with intellectual disability (ID) depend on manual signs during their expressive vocabulary acquisition, in relation to child and social-environmental characteristics.
METHOD: Expressive vocabulary acquisition in speech and manual signs was monitored over a 2-year period in 23 children with ID using parent report. The children's cognitive, communicative, and vocabulary comprehension skills were measured at baseline. Speech-language pathologists' and parents' use of and attitudes towards manual signs were measured us

Sensory cortices undergo crossmodal reorganisation as a consequence of sensory deprivation. Congenital deafness in humans represents a particular case with respect to other types of sensory deprivation, because cortical reorganisation is not only a consequence of auditory deprivation, but also of language-driven mechanisms. Visual crossmodal plasticity has been found in secondary auditory cortices of deaf individuals, but it is still unclear if reorganisation also takes place in primary auditory areas, and how this relates to language modality and auditory deprivation. Here, we dissociated the

Speech-language therapy (SLT) within deaf education in Aotearoa New Zealand remains influenced by oralist traditions. Māori deaf individuals also face barriers to their culture and native language. This qualitative study explored deaf adults' experiences and perceptions of SLT, including how SLTs should best support deaf children. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with 11 deaf adults (aged 28-65) who had engaged with SLT. Data were generated in New Zealand Sign Language or English and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Ensuring deaf children thrive and flourish was the overar

In this article, we provide a narrative review of research literature on the development of pragmatic skills and the social uses of language in children and adolescents, with a focus on those who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). In the review, we consider how pragmatic skills may develop over time for DHH children and adolescents depending on age, language context, amplification devices, and languages and communication modalities. The implications of these findings for enhancing intervention programs for DHH children and adolescents and for considering ideal contexts for optimizing the prag

Deaf learners are a highly heterogeneous group who demonstrate varied levels of academic achievement and attainment. Most prior research involving this population has focused on factors facilitating academic success in young deaf children, with less attention paid to older learners. Recent studies, however, have suggested that while factors such as early cochlear implantation and early sign language fluency are positively associated with academic achievement in younger deaf children, they no longer predict achievement once children reach high school age. This study, involving data from 980 col

Individuals with autism often fail to develop useful speech. If they have not done so by age 5, the prognosis for future development has been thought to be poor. However, some cases of later development of speech have been reported. To quantify and document the nature of later speech development and the factors that might be important for prognosis, we reviewed the extant literature. We searched both manually and electronically, examining all literature with at least an English-language abstract, through March 2008. The search identified a total of 167 individuals with autism who reportedly ac

Upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders became a potentially significant occupational hazard among sign language interpreters at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in the 1988-89 academic year. The following case control study was conducted to identify factors that might play a role in developing, exacerbating, and maintaining upper extremity cumulative trauma disorders among interpreters. Investigations were conducted to determine whether medical status, physical capacities, interpreting styles, pain, fatigue, and job stress differed among NTID's sign language interpreters. Thi

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have native exposure to a sign language such as American Sign Language (ASL) have received almost no scientific attention. This paper reports the first studies on a sample of five native-signing children (four deaf children of deaf parents and one hearing child of deaf parents; ages 4;6 to 7;5) diagnosed with ASD. A domain-general deficit in the ability of children with ASD to replicate the gestures of others is hypothesized to be a source of palm orientation reversal errors in sign. In Study 1, naturalistic language samples were collected from

PURPOSE: Caregivers of deaf/hard of hearing infants are faced with challenging decisions regarding their child's communication method. The purpose of the current research note is to characterize the advice that caregivers receive and value as well as the factors that influence caregivers' decision making.
METHOD: The current study enrolled 105 caregiver-child dyads, including children between 12 and 18 months of age with bilateral, congenital hearing loss. All children were exposed to spoken language, and 63.81% of children were also exposed to sign language. Caregivers completed the "Making

BackgroundDeaf individuals continue to face complex challenges in both accessing healthcare and obtaining information about dementia. Despite this, research into their perceptions of dementia and the need of tailored awareness programs remains limited. In response, a dementia awareness program specially designed for Deaf communities is being developed as part of the Erasmus+ project "DeSign".ObjectiveThis study provides the groundwork for that initiative by exploring (a) what Deaf individuals in Austria, Germany, and Greece know and how they perceive dementia, (b) the current challenges in acc

This article examines how deaf students and interpreters experience positioning within mainstream educational settings, with a focus on environments where a critical mass-defined as multiple deaf students and interpreters-is present. Drawing on interviews with 41 formerly mainstreamed deaf individuals and interpreters, the study explores how critical mass influences engagement, participation, and perceived membership in the school community. Findings suggest that critical mass enhances access to Deaf Community Cultural Wealth (DCCW) and fosters collaborative positioning. These environments str
