This study examined graduate student confidence, knowledge retention, and perceptions of a craniofacial disorders course delivered using team-based learning (TBL). Seventeen graduate students from a single class participated. Confidence was measured by survey pre-course, post-course, and 6 months later. Knowledge was assessed through exam scores, and retention was evaluated 7 months later using Cranio Q oral questions. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Confidence increased from pre-course to post-course and remained elevated at 6 months. Confidence was weakly correlated wit

Individual differences in tactile acuity are observed within and between age cohorts. Such differences in acuity may be attributed to various sources, including aspects of nervous system, skin mechanics, finger size, cognitive and behavioral factors, etc. This work considers individual differences, within a younger cohort of participants, in discriminating compliant surfaces. These participants exhibit a range of finger size and stiffness. Interestingly, both their finger size and stiffness well predict their discriminative performance, where softer/smaller fingers outperform stiffer/larger fi

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance is a core feature of anorexia nervosa (AN). Attitudinal and cognitive biases as well as fundamental perceptual differences have been hypothesized to play a role in this disturbance.
METHOD: This study investigated body image dissatisfaction and distortion, haptic perception and perfectionism in 30 patients with AN and 31 age-matched healthy controls. Participants completed perceptual tasks and self-report measures.
RESULTS: As predicted, participants with AN scored significantly higher on body dissatisfaction, perfectionism measures and had greater body dis

The sense of body ownership is being increasingly studied by manipulating incoming signals from the periphery with local anesthetics. We sought to understand how altered proprioception induced by anesthesia triggered a traumatic jersey finger, immediately postoperatively, in two patients who underwent surgical carpal tunnel release. Multiple mechanisms contributed to these postoperative injuries associated with a fall. Hand anesthesia deprives the brain of important afferent sensory information and modifies hand size perception in the brain. Moreover, it blocks efferent motor signals that cont

Acoustic short tone bursts (STB) trigger ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs/cVEMPs) by activating irregular otolith afferents. Simultaneously, STBs introduce an artificial net acceleration signal of otolith origin into the vestibular network. VEMP parameters as diagnostic otolith processing markers have been shown to decline after the age of thirty. To delineate the differential effects of healthy ageing on the cortical vestibular subnetwork processing otolith information, we measured cVEMPs and the differential effects of unilateral STB in three age groups (20-4

The authors describe a new visual illusion first discovered in a natural setting. A cyclist riding beside a pair of sagging chains that connect fence posts appears to move up and down with the chains. In this illusion, a static shape (the chains) affects the perception of a moving shape (the bicycle), and this influence involves assimilation (averaging) rather than opposition (differentiation). These features distinguish the illusion from illusions of motion capture and induced motion. The authors take this bicycle illusion into the laboratory and report 4 findings: Naïve viewers experience th

Collaborative behaviors provide useful signals for understanding how minds align through perception and actions. Virtual reality (VR) is a useful tool for studying these behaviors, as it enables fine-grained measurements of coordination in virtual social settings. In this work, we investigate collaborative behaviors in a large-scale classroom VR dataset of space-building activities (N = 146), focusing on dyadic synchrony and individual task engagement during the collaborative group activity. An analysis of collaborative behaviors over time revealed a U-shaped pattern in head and hand synchrony

Human pupillary responses are influenced by not only low-level visual properties but also cognitive and affective factors related to task demands. Nevertheless, how the temporal dynamics of pupil modulation differ across evaluative tasks in the context of material perception remains unclear. In this study, we investigated how pupillary responses vary when observers evaluate the same set of object images for either glossiness or attractiveness. These two perceptual attributes were selected to represent distinct cognitive demands: Glossiness is more closely related to lower-level visual processi

To address the issues of traditional grid-based Ant Colony Optimization path planning in discretized continuous space-including limited direction freedom, lack of global topological guidance, and difficulty in balancing path smoothness and safety margin-a topological progress potential-enhanced continuous-space ant colony path planning algorithm (TPP-CSACO) is proposed. TPP-CSACO discards grid-based expansion; instead, a perception circle centered on each ant is defined, movement is executed via a sector-based perception framework with probabilistic direction selection, and band-shaped decayin

BACKGROUND: Atypical perception of visual illusions is well-documented in schizophrenia (SZ) and thought to be a consequence of impairments in visual processes including perceptual organization (PO). The Ebbinghaus illusion, in which a circle appears larger or smaller depending on the size of surrounding circles, is facilitated by PO, and the extent to which the surrounds (i.e., context) influence perception of the center circle can be considered an index of context sensitivity. In the present study, as part of a broader investigation of the impact of a novel visual remediation (VR) program fo

PURPOSE: To determine if transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) could be effective for the enhancement of swimming performance or mood state in elite athletes.
METHODS: Eight male elite triathletes (age = 20 [2] y, maximal oxygen uptake = 71 [4] mL·kg-1·min-1) participated in this crossover, counterbalanced, sham-controlled, double-blind study. Participants received either actual (20 min of anodal stimulation of the motor cortex at 2 mA) or sham tDCS and performed an 800-m swimming test in which rating of perceived exertion and blood lactate response were measured. Mood state (Brunel

PURPOSE: Flicker-defined form (FDF) stimuli have recently been adopted for visual field testing. A key difference between FDF and traditional perimetric stimuli is that the entire display background contains flickering dots. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the perception of FDF stimuli is influenced by lateral interactions involving regions beyond the stimulus border in young healthy observers.
METHODS: Experiment 1 measured the effect of surround size and retinal eccentricity on the detection of the FDF contour. Psychometric functions were collected for surround diameters

OBJECTIVES: Haptics involves somatosensory perception through the skin surface and dynamic touch based on the proprioceptive response of the whole body. Handling Palaeolithic stone tools influences the arousal and attentional engagement, which can be detected and measured through electrodermal activity. Although tool shape has generally been studied to consider tool functions or tool making, it is also a major factor in tool sensing and haptic perception. The purpose of this survey is to analyze whether the electrodermal reactions are influenced by stone tool morphology.
METHODS: We first qua

Although vision is the primary sensory modality that humans and other primates use to identify objects in the environment, we can recognize crucial object features (e.g., shape, size) using the somatic modality. Previous studies have shown that the occipito-temporal areas dedicated to the visual processing of object forms, faces and bodies also show category-selective responses when the preferred stimuli are haptically explored out of view. Visual processing of human bodies engages specific areas in lateral (extrastriate body area, EBA) and medial (fusiform body area, FBA) occipito-temporal co

The colloidal behavior of protein-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions in the presence of saliva was investigated, as well as the impact of oil droplet-saliva interactions on the physicochemical and sensory properties of these emulsions. The emulsions were stabilized by three amphiphilic food proteins: sodium caseinate (NaCas), whey protein isolate (WPI), or lysozyme. Saliva incorporation decreased the negative charge and increased the particle size of all the emulsions, indicating a reduction in their stability. The NaCas emulsions exhibited the least structural changes in the presence of saliva

A series of experiments are described in which magnitude estimates of the perceived size of steel balls were made when the balls were actively rolled between the fingertip and several other body sites (thumb, thenar eminence, forearm). This movement, called scripting, involves actively moving an object by a touching surface over another surface of the body which is passively being touched. We define this active/passive activity as "intra-active touch" and the results show that the perceptual size of the balls is dependent upon the body part passively being activated. An additional series of ex

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) systems offer promising potential as a controlled platform to investigate human behaviors specifically related to food choices. Yet, little is known about its viability for conducting food choice studies with children, thus limiting the development of public health research.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the viability of VR technology for understanding children's food choices, focusing specifically on perceptual differences between VR and real-life (RL) settings. We examined how children perceive and interact with food portion sizes and container
