Histiocytic sarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm of mature histiocytes with very poor outcome. We report an autopsy case of a true histiocytic sarcoma with characteristic symptoms of so-called "malignant histiocytosis of the intestine". The liver and spleen were enlarged, with remarkable tumor cell infiltration in the hepatic sinusoids and splenic sinuses. We present the unusual case of a 76-year-old male who developed an intestinal recurrence of the same tumor 5 years after hepatic resection for an intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. At the time of the first surgery, the patient had undergone hepatic bisegmentectomy of segments IV and V with an 'en bloc' gallbladder resection and porta hepatis lymphadenectomy for the presence of a focal cholangiocarcinoma measuring about 3.0 x 2.5 cm in diameter. The histological report confirmed intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, the resection margins were free from disease, and there were no lymph node metastases.

Pathological examination in the spleen of an 81-year old female with hemoperitoneum, hypovolemic shock, anemia, thrombocytopenia and hyperglicemia revealed the presence of an angiosarcoma. The objective of this retrospective study was to describe the outcome and incidence of splenic malignancy in 18 dogs undergoing partial splenectomy for incidentally detected, non-ruptured splenic lesions. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unknown cause that commonly involves the spleen. Sarcoid can produce either homogeneous splenomegaly or multiple splenic nodules. Although other organ system involvement usually occurs, this is not invariable. Herein, we report on the clinical, histological, and radiological features-including sonography and MRI-of an isolated splenic sarcoidosis that mimicked neoplastic disease in a 37-year-old female. Knowledge of this atypical sonographic presentation may prevent unnecessary splenectomy.

Primitive bening spleen tumors are very rare in pediatrics. They can be solid or cystic. Authors report two cases of spleen tumors: one hamartoma of red pulp in a 4 1/2 year old male, with symptoms of an enlarged spleen and immunological deficit; and the other case a simple cyst, that developed as an enlarged spleen, lined by mesotelium. Based on this experience, they comment on frequency, clinical and radiologic diagnosis, pathology and treatment of these tumors.

Focal lesions of the spleen are due to multiple causes dominated by malignant lymphoma. The authors study the contribution of sonography in the diagnosis and etiology of these lesions based on a retrospective study of 38 cases, over an eight-year period. BACKGROUND: Organ-sparing pancreatic resection is important in prophylactic surgery for cystic neoplasms. There is controversy regarding the optimal surgical approach for pancreatic lesions in the neck or proximal body of the pancreas. Central compared with distal pancreatectomy is technically more challenging, but preserves more functional pancreatic tissue. Because of the prophylactic nature of the surgery and long survival of patients with benign and borderline malignant lesions, surgeons need to stratify greater importance to surgical morbidity and sparing pancreatic parenchyma.

Many diseases can induce splenomegaly, however, about 5% of splenomegalies are idiopathic. When there is no underlying treatable cause, and the splenomegaly significantly affects the quality of life, splenectomy is the best therapeutic choice. A 67-year-old woman had idiopathic and asymptomatic splenomegaly. The increase in splenomegaly resulted in hypersplenism with cytopenia and symptoms related to abdominal discomfort. Hairy cell leukemia is a rare lymphoid neoplasm arising from mature B-lymphocytes. PURPOSE: We reviewed the presentation and clinical findings in an unusual scrotal mass seen in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review involves a detailed description of 2 cases of splenogonadal fusion, and a complete survey and assessment of the published literature on this subject.
