The shoulder joint is the most mobile of all main limb joints. While its primary motion is in a sagittal plane, the shoulder has a significant amount of abduction and adduction, and internal and external rotation. Its stability is ensured by the joint capsule, by its specialized bands (medial and lateral glenohumeral ligaments), and by large tendons located inside (eg, tendon of origin of the biceps brachii muscle) or immediately outside the joint (eg, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis). Sprains or strains of all supporting structures of the canine shoulder have now

Mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions have gained much popularity, and the sport is watched by many millions annually. Despite ongoing controversy, there have been no objective studies of the injuries sustained in MMA based on on-site evaluation. In the study reported in this article, we attempted to delineate injury patterns for MMA participants. We conducted an observational cohort study of MMA competitions held in Hawaii between 1999 and 2006. The study included 116 bouts, involving 232 "exposures" and 179 male participants between ages 18 and 40. All the fighters were examined by 1 of 4 ph

Ankle sprains are very common, especially in sports activities. Accurate assessment of ankle ligament strain behavior is crucial in understanding ankle function and optimizing ankle rehabilitation programs. This study proposed an in-vivo lateral ankle ligament strain assessment technique for potential use in robot-assisted therapy. It consists of two phases: real-time identification of ankle joint and subtalar joint orientations and simulation of lateral ankle ligament strain behavior. A healthy participant conducted robot-assisted rehabilitation exercises and the results compared to a kinemat

A randomized, double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial compared diclofenac sodium (Voltaren, Ciba-Geigy Summit, NJ) with aspirin for the treatment of acute sprains and/or strains of the knee or ankle. One hundred thirty-nine patients were admitted to the study. Patients received either 150 mg (75 mg twice daily) of diclofenac (N = 69) or 3.6 g (1.2 g three times daily) of aspirin (N = 70) for 3 to 10 days. Forty-seven diclofenac patients and 49 aspirin patients, mean age for both groups 25 years, were evaluated to determine the efficacy of each treatment. Both groups experienced significant

BACKGROUND: Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast of the United States in August 2005, initially displaced over a million people from their primary place of residence. Displaced older adults subsequently faced challenges, such as new or inferior living conditions, which could increase vulnerability to serious or life-threatening injuries such as hip fracture. The aim of this study was to determine whether Katrina victims who were displaced for a prolonged period of time were more likely to experience injuries than nondisplaced victims.
METHODS: We tracked injury outcomes including fr

A Badminton Injury Questionnaire (BIQ) was developed to survey the type and frequency of injuries that are likely to occur from playing competitive badminton. Two hundred and thirty-one players, ranging from club players to international champions, completed the survey which indicated an injury incidence rate of .09 and .14 injuries per person per year for male and female badminton players respectively. Badminton participation resulted in relatively few injuries, most of which were cramps, blisters, strains and sprains of the lower extremities and a surprisingly low incidence of tennis elbow.

Basketball injuries are most prevalent in the lower extremity, especially at the ankle and knee. Most basketball injuries are orthopedic in nature and commonly include ligament sprains, musculotendinous strains, and overuse injuries including stress fractures. By virtue of its excellent contrast resolution and depiction of the soft tissues and trabecular bone, magnetic resonance imaging has become the principal modality for evaluating many basketball injuries. In this article, commonly encountered basketball injuries and their imaging appearances are described. The epidemiology of basketball i

In today's health-conscious society, more people are participating in athletic endeavors. As participation increases, so does the incidence of cervical injuries. Fortunately, most of the cervical injuries seen in sports are minor and can be treated successfully with minimal morbidity. It is important, however, to accurately assess the patient sustaining a cervical injury to rule out the presence of a more severe cervical injury. When practitioners understand the pathophysiology and treatment of common injuries, including sprains, strains, contusions, disc herniations, and simple fractures, mos

Family physicians can care for most patients injured while participating in indoor racquet sports. However, patients with injuries to the eye usually require ophthalmologic referral. The most common injuries that occur in persons participating in indoor racquet sports include contusions, sprains and strains, lacerations, eye injuries, bursitis and tendinitis. Musculoskeletal injuries that merit special consideration include lateral epicondylitis, DeQuervain's tenosynovitis, wrist intersection syndrome, patellar pain syndrome, meniscal injuries, Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis. Ankle injuries, including sprains, strains and other joint derangements and instability, are common, especially for athletes involved in indoor court or jumping sports. Identifying genetic loci associated with these ankle injuries could shed light on their etiologies. A genome-wide association screen was performed using publicly available data from the Research Program in Genes, Environment and Health (RPGEH) including 1,694 cases of ankle injury and 97,646 controls. An indel (chr21:47156779:D) that lies close to a collagen gene, COL18A1, showed an association with ankle injury at genome-wide

The aim of this study was to investigate insurance records for a one-year period to determine the injury frequencies and costs associated with different age groups in netball. The insurance records for all netball claims made during 1999 in Victoria were obtained from the insurer and entered into a database. The overall injury rate was 9.49 injuries per 1000 players, with 829 claims for injuries filed with the insurance company. Of all injuries claimed for, 85.3% were to the lower limb, 8.7% to the upper limb, 3.1% to the spine/torso and 2.9% to the head and face. Lower limb injuries accounted

SYNOPSIS: The National Society of Sports Physical Therapy (SONAFE-Brazil), the official organization representing sports physical therapists in Brazil, developed this clinical practice guideline to support clinicians and athletes in managing hamstring strain injury. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) approach was used to address the clinical question "Which interventions provided by physical therapists improve rehabilitation outcomes in athletes with hamstring strain injury?" The guideline provides an updated and targeted synthesis of evidence from r

Acute ankle sprains are a common musculoskeletal injury. As part of the physical examination, a combination of ankle-specific tests should be used to evaluate ligaments. Delaying the examination until 4 to 7 days postinjury increases diagnostic accuracy of sprain severity. In the acute setting, the Ottawa Foot and Ankle rules can help determine when radiography does not need to be ordered to evaluate for fracture. Management of acute ankle sprains should include joint protection, pain control, external ankle supports for 5 to 10 days, early functional activity, and targeted rehabilitation exer
