Health and voice quality in smokers: an exploratory investigation.

Thirty-two adults (20 smokers and 12 non-smokers) were examined to determine the effects of cigarette smoking on health (diseases and larynx histology), on fundamental frequency (regularity and jitter) and stress level. The examination consisted of nasovideostroboscopy analysis, history case, electrolaryngography assessment for different task performance and self-assessment of stress. Although not statistically different, results indicate that smokers in comparison to non-smokers show: 1) slightly more health problems; 2) histological larynx changes; 3) a higher level of stress; 4) a lower mea

Documentation of progress in voice therapy: perceptual, acoustic, and laryngostroboscopic findings pretherapy and posttherapy.

The effect of voice therapy in a group of chronically dysphonic patients with diverse diagnoses was studied according to the normal clinical procedure. The results were evaluated by perceptual rating, acoustic analysis, and the assessment of laryngostroboscopic recordings. Although the group effects for the differences between posttherapy and pretherapy data were clearly significant, the effects of voice therapy for the individual patients were divergent. For each of the three evaluation methods, a significant improvement was found for about 40% to 50% of the patients. The diversity of the the

Real-time dual visualization of two different modalities for the evaluation of vocal fold vibration - Laryngeal videoendoscopy and 2D scanning videokymography: Preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, various tools have been introduced for the assessment of vocal fold vibration: laryngeal videolaryngoscopy (LV), videokymography (VKG), high speed videoendoscopy (HSV), digital videokymography (DKG), and 2D scanning videokymography (2D VKG). Among these, the authors have recently designed a dual modality examination system using LV and 2D VKG for more detailed information regarding the vibrations of the vocal folds. The clinical availability of this hybrid system offers medical imaging departments a range of potential advantages in the evaluation of vocal fold vibration.

Sulcus Vocalis (Type III): Prevalence and Strobovideolaryngoscopy Characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: The reported prevalence of sulcus vocalis (SV)/type III, a pathologic groove in the vibratory margin of the vocal fold, varies greatly in the literature. Difficulties in visualizing the defect and a variety of descriptions have complicated the evaluation of SV. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of SV by reviewing strobovideolaryngoscopy (SVL) examinations in subjects with and without dysphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: Charts and SVL images were reviewed for subjects with and without dysphonia and analyzed using standard statist

The clinical application of electrolaryngography in a tertiary children's hospital.

The assessment and management of children's voice disorders poses clinical challenges at many levels. Accurate diagnosis and treatment requires access to a range of tools and methods appropriate for use with paediatrics. The application of electrolaryngography to the management of children's voice disorders in a tertiary children's hospital is described, with examples drawn from four case studies. Measures of fundamental frequency, contact quotient, and irregularity are used routinely to clarify the nature of the vocal impairment and to evaluate treatment outcome. Real-time displays provide bi

Sulcus vocalis in spasmodic dysphonia-A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a neurological condition of the larynx characterised by task specific, involuntary spasms of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles causing frequent voice breaks during speech. The current treatment modality involves Botulinum Toxin injections into the affected group of muscles. This has yielded satisfactory results in Adductor SD (ADSD) and mixed SD but not in Abductor SD (ABSD). Sulcus vocalis is a morphological condition of the vocal folds with invagination of the superficial epithelium into the lamina propria or deeper layers. It is characterised by breathi

Respiratory Laryngeal Dystonia: Characterization and Diagnosis of a Rare Neurogenic Disorder.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Respiratory laryngeal dystonia (RLD) is poorly understood and rarely reported in the literature. Patients have atypical laryngeal movement resulting in airway obstruction. This motion is neurogenic in nature, is constant while awake, nonepisodic, and non-trigger dependent. Given its rarity, it is often misdiagnosed for inducible laryngeal obstruction; however, it is refractory to medical and behavioral management. Although this condition has been addressed in the literature, this report is the largest case series characterizing presenting symptomology, multimodal treatme

Development of a speech treatment program for a client with essential vocal tremor.

Vocal tremor is characterized by involuntary rhythmic modulations of pitch and loudness and is best perceived during sustained phonation of vowels. It is most often present in individuals affected by neurogenic disorders such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular dystrophy, spasmodic dysphonia, and essential tremor. Vocal tremor does not appear to be responsive to systemic pharmaceutical management but may benefit from injection of botulinum toxin (i.e., Botox) into affected musculature. However, many individuals do not tolerate the potential side effects of se
