Effects of long-term herbaceous plant restoration on microbial communities and metabolic profiles in coal gangue-contaminated soil.

The soil microbial diversity in the gangue accumulation area is severely stressed by a variety of heavy metals, while the influence of long-term recovery of herbaceous plants on the ecological structure of gangue-contaminated soil is to be explored. Therefore, we analysed the differences in physicochemical properties, elemental changes, microbial community structure, metabolites and expression of related pathways in soils in the 10- and 20-year herbaceous remediation areas of coal gangue. Our results showed that phosphatase, soil urease, and sucrase activities of gangue soils significantly inc

Effects of Dietary Zearalenone Exposure on the Growth Performance, Small Intestine Disaccharidase, and Antioxidant Activities of Weaned Gilts.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a secondary metabolite with estrogenic effects produced by Fusarium fungi and mainly occurs as a contaminant of grains such as corn and wheat. ZEA, to which weaned gilts are extremely sensitive, is the main Fusarium toxin detected in corn-soybean meal diets. Our aim was to examine the effects of ZEA on the growth performance, intestinal disaccharidase activity, and anti-stress capacity of weaned gilts. Twenty 42-day-old healthy Duroc × Landrace × Large White weaned gilts (12.84 ± 0.26 kg) were randomly divided into control and treatment (diet containing 1.04 mg/kg ZEA) gro

Effects of Kluyveromyces marxianus supplementation on immune responses, intestinal structure and microbiota in broiler chickens.

To investigate the effects of Kluyveromyces marxianus on immune responses, intestinal structure and microbiota in broilers, 840 1-d-old broiler chicks were randomly divided into seven groups (eight replicates) and were fed basal diets without or with 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 g/kg of K. marxianus (2.0×1010 CFU/g). Serum and intestine samples were collected at 21 d of age. The results showed that increasing K. marxianus addition linearly reduced feed conversion ratio but linearly elevated relative thymus weight, as well as quadratically increased serum lysozyme and IgG levels, with the

Influences of wheat bran fiber on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal epithelium functions in Xiangcun pigs.

Dietary fiber (DF) has long been looked as an essential "nutrients" both for animals and humans as it can promote the intestinal tract development and modulate the intestinal epithelium functions and the gut microbiota. This study was conducted to investigate the influences of wheat bran fiber (WBF) on growth performance and intestinal epithelium functions in Xiangcun pigs. Twenty Xiangcun pigs with 60 days of age were divided to two groups and exposed to a basal diet (BD) or BD containing 4.3% wheat bran fiber (WFD). WFD improved the average daily gain (ADG) and feed-to-gain ratio (F:G) (p <

Regional Proteomic Quantification of Clinically Relevant Non-Cytochrome P450 Enzymes along the Human Small Intestine.

Current challenges in accurately predicting intestinal metabolism arise from the complex nature of the intestine, leading to limited applicability of available in vitro tools as well as knowledge deficits in intestinal physiology, including enzyme abundance. In particular, information on regional enzyme abundance along the small intestine is lacking, especially for non-cytochrome P450 enzymes such as carboxylesterases (CESs), UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs), and sulfotransferases (SULTs). We used cryopreserved human intestinal mucosa samples from nine donors as an in vitro surrogate model

A mono-component microbial protease improves performance, net energy, and digestibility of amino acids and starch, and upregulates jejunal expression of genes responsible for peptide transport in broilers fed corn/wheat-based diets supplemented with xylanase and phytase.

A total of 90 male Ross 308 broiler chicks were used in a digestibility and performance bioassay to explore the effect of reduction in dietary protein and digestible amino acids and inclusion of an exogenous mono-component protease on amino acid digestibility, net energy, jejunal gene expression, and bird performance. Four dietary treatments were created by the supplementation, or not, of 2 control diets with a mono-component exogenous protease. The control diets were corn/wheat/soybean meal-based and were formulated to be either nutritionally adequate or reduced in protein and amino acids (ar

The role of probiotic cultures in the control of gastrointestinal health.

The use of probiotics to enhance intestinal health has been proposed for many years. Probiotics are traditionally defined as viable microorganisms that have a beneficial effect in the prevention and treatment of specific pathologic conditions when they are ingested. There is a relatively large volume of literature that supports the use of probiotics to prevent or treat intestinal disorders. However, the scientific basis of probiotic use has been firmly established only recently, and sound clinical studies have begun to be published. Currently, the best-studied probiotics are the lactic acid ba

Plant growth improvement and microbial community reorganization are decoupled during restoration of trampled urban forest soil.

A key question in trampled urban forests is whether improved understory plant growth is accompanied by corresponding changes in the belowground microbial community. We compared ploughing, Bacillus thuringiensis NL-11 inoculation, biochar addition, and NL-11 plus biochar co-application to determine whether improved plant growth was accompanied by parallel bacterial and fungal responses in a trampled Ophiopogon japonicus system. At the one-year sampling, NL-11 and co-application both showed improved plant growth, but their soil and microbial responses differed. NL-11 increased nitrate nitrogen a

Foliar Application of Bacillus thuringiensis Regulates Soil Physicochemical Properties and Microbial Ecological Functions in Tea Plantations.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is widely employed as a biological control agent against pests in tea plantations, yet its impacts on soil health and microbial ecology remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the effects of two Bt application regimes, namely moderate-frequency conventional Bt application (Bt1, 3 sprays over 21 days) and high-frequency intensive Bt application (Bt2, 6 sprays over 42 days), on soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial community structure and function in tea soils. The moderate-frequency conventional Bt1 significantly improved

Microalgal fertilizers as sustainable alternatives to chemical fertilizers: Enhancing pepper yield and soil health through reduced synthetic input strategies.

Long-term excessive application of chemical fertilizers (CF) has led to a decline in soil fertility and the deterioration of soil health. Consequently, developing eco-friendly microbial fertilizers as alternatives to chemical inputs has become a global consensus for promoting sustainable agriculture. To explore the underexplored potential and soil-modulating mechanisms of microalgae-based fertilizers, this study investigates their feasibility of microalgae-based fertilizers as CF substitutes for enhancing the yield and quality of peppers (Capsicum annuum L.). We compared the application effect
