Nickel release from nickel particles in artificial sweat.

Nickel is widely used in a broad range of products, primarily made of alloys, used by humans on a daily basis. Previous assessments have shown that skin contact with some such products may cause nickel allergic contact dermatitis, induced by the release of nickel. However, data on nickel release from small nickel particles in artificial sweat for assessment of potential risks of workers in nickel-producing and nickel-using facilities are not available. The objective of this study was to fill this knowledge gap by determining nickel release from fine nickel powder ( approximately 4 microm diame

Another way to think of tears: blood, sweat, and... "dacruon".

Eugene Wolff's 1946 concept of an interpalpebral, trilaminar, preocular tear film does not sit comfortably with more recent scientific observations. A film so defined could exist only in the interblink phase and would exclude unshed retropalpebral fluid. A modern, evidence-based, clinically relevant model is needed, one that includes retropalpebral and meniscal fluids and is applicable throughout the blink cycle. The "ocular surface" (OS) concept combines adjacent discrete epithelia into a single continuous mucosal sheet. This "surface" constitutes an integrated organ. The OS concept has revol

The English 'sweate' (Sudor Anglicus) and Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

A rapidly fatal viral infectious disease appeared in England in 1485, persisted for the summer months and disappeared as winter approached. This pattern of infection re-appeared in 1508, 1517, 1528, and finally 1551. The epidemic never returned. It had no respect for wealth or rank, and predominantly attacked males between the ages of 15 and 45 years. The incubation period was frighteningly short and the outcome normally fatal. The symptoms of acute respiratory disease and copious sweating were characteristic, providing the name 'the English sweating disease'. It was never in the big league of

Catecholamines are required for the acquisition of secretory responsiveness by sweat glands.

The sympathetic innervation of sweat glands undergoes a developmental change in transmitter phenotype from catecholaminergic to cholinergic. Acetylcholine elicits sweating and is necessary for development and maintenance of secretory responsiveness, the ability of glands to produce sweat after nerve stimulation or agonist administration. To determine whether catecholamines play a role in the development or function of this system, we examined the onset of secretory responsiveness in two transgenic mouse lines, one albino and the other pigmented, that lack tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), the rate-li

Caffeine demethylation monitoring using a transdermal sweat patch.

Caffeine and two metabolites (paraxanthine and theobromine) were quantitated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using extracts from transdermal sweat patches that continuously collected and stored analytes lost through the skin. Following caffeine consumption, remarkably clean chromatograms were obtained with minimal sample preparation. Caffeine and paraxanthine accumulated in the patch at comparable rates, and theobromine accumulated more slowly. A major urinary metabolite, 1-methylxanthine, was notably absent in sweat-patch and plasma extracts, a finding which favors a renal so

p53 protein in benign and malignant sweat gland tumors.

Mutation of the p53 gene and increased levels of p53 protein are among the most frequent alterations in human cancers. To date, very little is known about the mechanisms underlying the development of sweat gland carcinomas. In this study, we analyzed 43 benign and 39 malignant sweat gland tumors for p53 protein level using the antibody PAB1801. Nine (23%) of 39 sweat gland carcinomas were positive for p53 protein. Among these carcinomas, six of 12 cases of extramammary Paget's disease were positive using immunohistochemistry. No other correlation between tumor subtype and p53 reactivity was de

[Sweat-gland function in patients with X-linked ichthyosis].

Literature reports that patients affected by X-linked ichthyosis (XLI) have a reduction of sweat glands and a decrease of sweat production. The sweat physiology of 28 patients, 14 with XLI, 7 with lamellar ichthyosis, 7 with dominant ichthyosis and 28 control subjects were examined with sweat test, performed by pilocarpine iontophoresis. In the same patients we have performed skin biopsy to evaluate quantitative and qualitative reduction of sweat glands.

Proliferation of eccrine sweat ducts associated with alopecia areata.

Proliferation of sweat ducts has been described as a reactive process in a variety of benign and malignant neoplasms and inflammatory conditions in the skin, including scarring alopecia. However, to our knowledge this phenomenon has not been observed in non-scarring alopecia. The following case documents such a proliferation arising in an alopecia consistent with alopecia areata. An 83-year-old female developed progressive, fairly well circumscribed patches of alopecia over a 2-3 year period. Unequivocal scarring was not present. Histopathological examination revealed non-scarring alopecia wit

[Cancer of the sweat glands (its clinico-morphological characteristics)].

Based on a review of the literature and the authors' own experience comprising 20 cases, clinical and histological characteristics of sweat gland cancers (SGC) are detailed. Two clinical variants of SGC are distinguished: exophytic (or exophytic-endophytic) with ulceration and endophytic (intradermal). The lapse of time between detection of a SGC and its removal generally ranges from 12 months to 2 or more years. It is shown that diagnostic and prognostic considerations warrant classifying these cancers into two groups: those arising from benign tumors and retaining their histologic and ultras

Quantitative sweat test in diabetics with neuropathic foot lesions.

The volume of sweat produced by axon reflex stimulation using acetylcholine was measured in one foot each of 35 control subjects and 52 feet of 37 diabetic patients (28 with neuropathic ulceration, 11 with Charcot arthropathy, nine with somatic neuropathy but no foot lesion and four with no evidence of somatic neuropathy). In controls, the volume of sweat was greater in males than females. A flare response was seen in 94% of control feet. In diabetics, the volume of sweat was within the control range in 17 feet, increased in one, reduced in seven, and absent in 27. Sweating was absent in 75% o

Coulometric titration of sweat collected with the Webster Collection System.

Presented here are chloride results obtained by direct titration of undiluted sweat collected with the Webster Sweat Collection System. Six hundred and thirty-two sweat chloride results were reported on 604 patients. Thirty-six of thirty-nine sweat chloride results of 60 mM or greater were from patients with cystic fibrosis. Three results (61, 63 and 64 mM) were from a 12-year-old female who had one episode of rectal prolapse but after one year does not have clinical evidence of cystic fibrosis. There was one patient with a cystic fibrosis variant with intermediate range sweat chloride. All ot

Validation of a Novel Method for Measuring Sweat-Derived Immunoglobulin A.

INTRODUCTION: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is a major antibody responsible for mucosal immunity, abundant in saliva, tears, airways, and the gastrointestinal tract, where it functions as the first line of defense against pathogens. In recent years, simple and non-invasive methods for monitoring IgA levels have become increasingly important for health management and disease prevention. Blood and saliva are routinely used to detect IgA levels; however, blood sampling is invasive, and saliva is strongly influenced by psychological states, limiting high-frequency or real-time monitoring. This study eval

Sweat-prints of COVID-19: unique metabolite signatures.

AIM: The study of human sweat and its metabolite profile can reveal important metabolic processes. Metabolites produced during respiratory infections, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), create unique odor signatures. This study aims to identify a distinct signature of SARS-CoV-2 infection through the analysis of sweat metabolites. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sweat samples were collected from the axillae of individuals during the Delta and Omicron pandemic waves. Samples represent symptomatic (ventilator; n = 49), asymptomatic (home quarantine; n = 46) patients, an

Sweat as a diagnostic biofluid: analytical advances and future directions.

The use of sweat as an alternative specimen for biological analyses is well recognised and has been successfully applied in forensic toxicology and clinical health assessments. Compared to conventional matrices such as urine and blood, sweat samples are easy to obtain, are less invasive and present a reduced number of endogenous interferents. Advanced analytical techniques in sweat analysis have considerably expanded capabilities in the isolation of drugs, detection of complex metabolites and identification of biomarkers. The ability to detect a broader range of substances with greater sensiti

Wearable sweat chloride sensors: materials, fabrication and their applications.

Chloride is a crucial anion required for multiple functions in the human body including maintaining acid-base balance, fluid balance, electrical neutrality and supporting muscles and nerve cells. Low-chloride levels can cause nausea, diarrhoea, etc. Chloride levels are measured in different body fluids such as urine, serum, sweat and saliva. Sweat chloride measurements are used for multiple applications including disease diagnosis, sports monitoring, and geriatric care. For instance, a sweat chloride test is performed for cystic fibrosis screening. Further, sweat also offers continuous non-inv
