Early-onset periodontitis associated with Weary-Kindler syndrome: a case report.

Weary-Kindler syndrome is a rare and poorly understood genetic disorder that has manifestations of both epidermolysis bullosa and poikiloderma congenitale. There are approximately 70 cases documented in the past 40 years but no cases appear in the dental literature, although dental findings have been discussed superficially in dermatological and pediatric publications. This case reports on the periodontal findings and treatment for a 16-year-old female diagnosed with the syndrome. Early exfoliation of deciduous teeth, severe periodontal bone loss around many permanent teeth, and fragile bleedi

Impact of Common Fruit Juices and Toothbrushing on the Discoloration of Primary Teeth.

Tooth discoloration is a common esthetic concern that may influence psychosocial development and peer interactions during childhood. This in vitro study aimed to compare the discoloration potential of fruit juices frequently consumed by children-black mulberry, organic pomegranate, and organic orange-and to evaluate whether brushing with fluoridated or non-fluoridated toothpastes reduces these changes in primary teeth. Eighty sound primary teeth extracted due to trauma, orthodontic indications, or natural exfoliation and free of caries, restorations, enamel defects, or pre-existing discolorati

Research progress in heterogeneity of dental mesenchymal stem cells.

Dental tissues development involves two distinct cell lineages: mesenchymal cells (derived from the cranial neural crest) and epithelial cells (derived from oral ectoderm and pharyngeal epithelium). Emerging evidence highlights the remarkable functional heterogeneity of cranial neural crest-derived dental mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs), exhibiting pluripotency, self-renewal, and differentiation capacities. This heterogeneity enables a single DMSC population to generate specialized subpopulations with unique roles in teeth and periodontal tissues formation. Significant progress has been made in

In Vitro and In Vivo Anti-Inflammatory Effects of TEES-10®, a Mixture of Ethanol Extracts of Ligularia stenocephala Matsum. & Koidz. and Secale cereale L. Sprout, on Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Gingivitis and periodontitis are inflammatory disorders caused by dental plaque and calculus. These disorders often lead to tooth loss if not treated properly. Although antibiotics can be used, it is hard to treat them due to the difficulty in supplying effective doses of antibiotics to lesion areas and side effects associated with long-term use of antibiotics. In the present study, attempts were made to provide in vitro and in vivo evidence to support anti-inflammatory activities of TEES-10®, a mixture of ethanol extracts of Ligularia stenocephala (LSE) and Secale cereale L. sprout (SCSE) tow

Immunomodulating Profile of Dental Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: A Comprehensive Overview.

Dental mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent cells present in dental tissues, characterized by plastic adherence in culture and specific surface markers (CD105, CD73, CD90, STRO-1, CD106, and CD146), common to all other MSC subtypes. Dental pulp, periodontal ligament, apical papilla, human exfoliated deciduous teeth, alveolar bone, dental follicle, tooth germ, and gingiva are all different sources for isolation and expansion of MSCs. Dental MSCs have regenerative and immunomodulatory properties; they are scarcely immunogenic but actively modulate T cell reactivity. in vitro studies

The nance lingual arch: an auxiliary device in solving lower anterior crowding.

After exfoliation of the primary incisors and eruption of the permanent incisors, the dentist has the opportunity of observing closely the beginning of occlusal changes. In several cases, alterations, such as lower anterior crowding, can be prevented and treated with proper follow-up. In the mixed dentition, one of the mechanisms for maintaining space and favoring dental alignment is to preserve leeway space before permanent second molar irruption. Among the devices with this function, the Nance lingual arch helps maintaining the position of the permanent mandibular molars and incisors after a

Exosome-Based Therapy for Osseous Regeneration in Dental and Maxillofacial Applications.

Exosomes, nanoscale extracellular vesicles, have garnered substantial interest in biomedical research owing to their critical roles in intercellular communication, diagnostics, and regenerative therapeutics. Among biomolecules investigated in regenerative medicine, exosomes are one of the most intensively researched. While no clinical trials have yet been conducted to assess their regenerative efficacy in human dental applications, a rapidly growing body of preclinical research highlights their therapeutic potential in oral and maxillofacial regeneration. Dental tissue-derived exosomes, most n

Oral manifestations of eating disorders in adolescent patients. A review.

AIM: Eating disorders (ED) are a group of psychopathological disorders that affect the patient's relationship with food and his own body and that are manifested mainly in adolescence and in young-adult age. ED include anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and other eating disorders as classified in the DMS-V. ED can result in several oral and dental manifestations that often occur in the early stages of ED and may allow early detection. The aim of the study is to describe the different oral and dental manifestations in patients with ED in order to offer a classification for their identif

Early orthodontic treatment: a new index to assess the risk of malocclusion in primary dentition.

AIM: A new index targeted on the risk of malocclusions in primary dentition, called Baby-ROMA (Risk Of Malocclusion Assessment) index, was set up to assess risks/benefits in early orthodontic therapies. The Baby-ROMA index was designed from the observation that some of the malocclusion signs, observed in primary dentition, can worsen with growth, others remain the same over time and others can even improve. Therefore it would be important to classify the malocclusions observed at an early stage on a risk- based scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The reliability of the index was tested on 200 child

Contemporary Class II Division 2 nonextraction adult treatment.

Achieving ideal results when treating a difficult malocclusion is a challenge that orthodontists frequently encounter. Maintaining those results is sometimes more challenging than the correction itself. As specialists in orthodontics, we should be able to apply bone physiology concepts during the diagnosis and treatment planning process and predict how bone will react after biomechanical stimuli. Understanding bone physiology and the biology of tissue response during orthodontic tooth movement should allow us to develop the proper mechanical design and consequently the therapeutic procedures n

Regulation of CCl4-induced liver cirrhosis by hepatically differentiated human dental pulp stem cells.

Liver transplantation is the most effective treatment for treating liver cirrhosis. However, a limited number of donors, graft rejection, and other complications can undermine transplant success. It is considered that cell transplantation is an alternative approach of liver transplantation. We previously developed a protocol for hepatic differentiation of cluster of differentiation 117+ stem cells isolated from human exfoliated deciduous tooth pulp (SHEDs) under hydrogen sulfide exposure. These cells showed excellent hepatic function. Here, we investigated whether hepatocyte-like cell transpla
