Case Report: First Molecular Diagnosis of Liver Abscesses Due to Fasciola hepatica Acute Infection Imported from Vietnam.

We report a case of Fasciola hepatica liver abscesses in a 67-year-old female returning from a trip to Vietnam. She has been suffering from a fever, right abdominal pain for 4 days, and major eosinophilia. Radiologic investigations showed multiple hypodense confluent abscesses in the right lobe of the liver, complicated by occlusive thrombosis of the right branch of the portal vein. The serological investigation of helminth-elicited eosinophilia showed only a positive serology for F. hepatica. Despite repeated negative stool examinations for any intestinal pathogen, the diagnosis was establish

Fascioliasis-a rare cause of hepatic nodules.

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease that can sometimes affect humans. It presents with non-specific signs and symptoms which makes it difficult to establish an early definitive diagnosis. This can be particularly true in non-endemic countries where a high degree of suspicion is needed to make the diagnosis. Another confounding factor is that many of the initial complains and findings are very similar to those of malignancy. We report a case of an otherwise healthy 47 year-old male presenting with abdominal pain, night-time sweating, anorexia, weight loss and loose stools that had several hepati

Experiments on anthelmintic control of Fasciola hepatica in Brazil.

Two separate field trials involving naturally infected cattle were carried out on two farms known to have a history of Fasciola hepatica infection. On the first farm, 15 animals per group were allocated as follows: G1, triclabendazole (TCBZ) four times a year; G2, TCBZ twice a year (May and September); G3, untreated control. All groups grazed together and after 3.5 years the animals were slaughtered and their livers examined by federal meat inspectors who condemned 100% of livers in G3 and 8.3% in G2 owing to the presence of lesions of fasciolosis. In G1 no livers were condemned. Significant d

Human infection by Fasciola hepatica in Venezuela: report of a geriatric case.

A new case of human infection due to Fasciola hepatica is reported in the Venezuelan parasitological literature. The patient is an 81-year-old female asymptomatic, with an eosinophilia of 21% and critrosedimentation rate of 26 mm/h and was found during a routine check up. These values were normal at the time of treatment (4 months later), as were several tests of hepatic function, blood chemistry and peripheral blood haematological values. The number of eggs of the parasite were between 90 and 130/g of facees. The patient was successfully treated with the human formulation of trielabendazole a

Fasciola hepatica Infection Risk for Adult Household Members Living with Children with Fascioliasis in Cusco, Peru.

Fasciola hepatica is highly prevalent in the highlands of Peru. School-age children have the greatest risk of infection. Mass treatment of at-risk populations has been proposed to control the infection and prevent complications. However, the decreasing effectiveness of triclabendazole raises concerns regarding this strategy. Previous studies reported aggregation of Fasciola infection among family members. This study aimed to determine the risk of fascioliasis among household members living with Fasciola-infected children identified through school-based testing. We conducted a cross-sectional s

Efficacy of combined chemotherapy against gastrointestinal nematodes and Fasciola hepatica in cattle.

A controlled trial of the efficacy of several anthelmintic compounds as a combined therapy in the treatment of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) in naturally infected cattle was carried out. Twenty crossbred calves, 8-18 months old, were selected for inclusion in the trial based on finding eggs of F. hepatica and GIN in the faeces. They were blocked in four groups of five animals each according to GIN fecal egg counts on day 0. Treatments were sequentially allocated to animals in each block as follows: Group 1 served as non-treated control; Group 2 was treate

Hepatic fascioliasis of emphasizing diagnostic difficulty and the need for high index of suspicion: Four case reports.

BACKGROUND: Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) (liver fluke) is a parasitic trematode that infects humans through the consumption of contaminated aquatic plants harboring the infective stage of the parasite. Despite being a neglected tropical disease, a World Health Organization report estimates that it affects approximately 2.4 million people worldwide, with high endemicity in regions characterized by poor sanitation and limited access to clean water. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic infection to severe complications such as liver abscess and multi-organ involvement. CASE SUMMARY

Diagnosis of sheep fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica using cathepsin L enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA).

Fasciolosis, a global parasitic disease of agricultural livestock, is caused by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica. Management and strategic control of fasciolosis on farms depends on early assessment of the extent of disease so that control measures can be implemented quickly. Traditionally, this has relied on the detection of eggs in the faeces of animals, a laborious method that lacks sensitivity, especially for sub-clinical infections, and identifies chronic infections only. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) offer a quicker and more sensitive serological means of diagnosis that cou

Development of a multiplex quantitative PCR assay for detection and quantification of DNA from Fasciola hepatica and the intermediate snail host, Austropeplea tomentosa, in water samples.

Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection is an increasing threat to livestock production resulting in serious economic losses to the beef, dairy and sheep industries in Australia and globally. Triclabendazole (TCBZ) is the main drug used to control liver fluke infections in Australia and the widespread emergence of TCBZ resistance in cattle and sheep threatens liver fluke control. Alternative control measures to lower exposure of livestock to fluke infection would be useful to help preserve the usefulness of current chemical flukicides. Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling methodology and associ

Low allelic diversity in vaccine candidates genes from different locations sustain hope for Fasciola hepatica immunization.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite that causes fasciolosis in animals and humans. Fasciolosis is usually treated with triclabendazole, although drug-resistant parasites have been described in several geographical locations. An alternative to drug treatment would be the use of a vaccine, although vaccination studies that have been performed mainly in ruminants over the last 30 years, show high variability in the achieved protection and are not yet ready for commercialisation. Since F. hepatica exhibits a high degree of genomic polymorphism, variation in vaccine efficacy could be attribut

[Multiple liver lesions accompanied by eosinophilia - a case report of fascioliosis].

Fascioliosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica (common liver fluke). Initial clinical symptoms are frequently non-specific. Even after the development of liver tumors, a range of different underlying disorders will have to be considered. The rare cause of a parasitosis is not always included in the differential diagnostic work up. We report on a 41-year-old truck driver from Middle East who was admitted at our hospital due to ongoing upper abdominal pain, fatigue, night sweat and nausea lasting for weeks. Diagnostic investigation showed leucocytosis, high erythrocyte sedimentat

Plant-derived anthelmintic agents in veterinary helminth control: Mechanistic insights and translational challenges.

Helminth infections, caused by cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes, continue to be a major constraint on animal health, livestock productivity, and global parasite control. While conventional anthelmintics such as benzimidazoles, macrocyclic lactones, levamisole, praziquantel, and triclabendazole are highly effective, their extensive use has driven resistance development, revealed stage-specific efficacy limitations, and raised concerns regarding environmental residues. These limitations have renewed interest in plant-derived anthelmintic agents as potential pharmacological leads and complemen
