Neural activity in superior parietal cortex during rule-based visual-motor transformations.

Cognition allows for the use of different rule-based sensorimotor strategies, but the neural underpinnings of such strategies are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to compare neural activity in the superior parietal lobule during a standard (direct interaction) reaching task, with two nonstandard (gaze and reach spatially incongruent) reaching tasks requiring the integration of rule-based information. Specifically, these nonstandard tasks involved dissociating the planes of reach and vision or rotating visual feedback by 180°. Single unit activity, gaze, and reach trajectories w

Effects of different forms of monocular deprivation on primary visual cortex maps.

Monocular deprivation (MD) by lid suture is one of the classic paradigms for the study of developmental plasticity in the cerebral cortex, and we have detailed knowledge of its anatomical and physiological consequences as well as underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. However, the effects of other forms of manipulating visual input through one eye on the functional architecture of the primary visual cortex (V1) have not yet been examined directly. We compared MD by lid suture with the effects of daily monocular lens wear using either a frosted lens or a neutral density (ND) filter. We u

Reflexive attentional orienting in migraineurs: The behavioral implications of hyperexcitable visual cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Although migraine is classified as a headache disorder, a key part of migraine pathophysiology is a heightened excitability of visual cortices in between headache events. The goal of our study was to examine the behavioral impact of this visuocortical hyperexcitability, in terms of its effect on reflexive visual attentional orienting. METHODS AND RESULTS: In Experiment 1, using a non-predictive spatial cuing task that relied on sensory-evoked responses in the visual cortex for triggering attentional orienting, we found that migraineurs had greater attentional enhancement of manu

Early valproic acid exposure alters functional organization in the primary visual cortex.

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders and affects 0.5 to 1% of pregnant women. The use of antiepileptic drugs, which is usually continued throughout pregnancy, can cause in offspring mild to severe sensory deficits. Neuronal selectivity to stimulus orientation is a basic functional property of the visual cortex that is crucial for perception of shapes and borders. Here we investigate the effects of early exposure to valproic acid (Val) and levetiracetam (Lev), commonly used antiepileptic drugs, on the development of cortical neuron orientation selectivity and organization of

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of binocular interactions in visual cortex in strabismus.

PURPOSE: To observe changes in primary visual cortical activation associated with perceptual suppression in individuals with strabismus, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS: In Phase 1, pilot data were collected from 1 control and 8 strabismic participants, including 5 with amblyopia. In Phase 2, results were collected from 7 participants with strabismus (2 recalled and 5 new), including 2 with amblyopia. fMRI compared primary visual cortex activation in two conditions: visual stimuli presented to both eyes, to evoke perceptual suppression of one eye in individuals wit

Double dissociation between motor and visual imagery in the posterior parietal cortex.

Because motor imagery (MI) and visual imagery (VI) are influenced differently by factors such as biomechanical constraints or stimulus size, it is conceivable that they rely on separate processes, possibly involving distinct cortical networks, a view corroborated by neuroimaging and neuropsychological studies. In the posterior parietal cortex, it has been suggested that the superior parietal lobule (SPL) underlies VI, whereas MI relies on the supramarginalis gyrus (SMG). However, because several brain imaging studies have also shown an overlap of activations in SPL and SMG during VI or MI, the

Peri-ictal normalization of visual cortex excitability in migraine: an MEG study.

To delineate if the change in cortical excitability persists across migraine attacks, visual evoked magnetic fields (VEF) were measured in patients with migraine without aura during the interictal (n = 26) or peri-ictal (n = 21) periods, and were compared with 30 healthy controls. The visual stimuli were checkerboard reversals with four different check sizes (15', 30', 60' and 120'). For each check size, five sequential blocks of 50 VEF responses were recorded to calculate the percentage change of the P100m amplitude in the second to the fifth blocks in comparison with the first block. Direct tactile stimulation of dorsal occipito-temporal cortex in a visual agnosic.

The human occipito-temporal cortex is preferentially activated by images of objects as opposed to scrambled images. Touching objects (versus textures) also activates this region. We used neuropsychological fMRI to probe whether dorsal regions of the lateral occipital cortex (LO) are activated in tactile recognition without mediation through visual recognition. We tested a patient (HJA) with visual agnosia due to bilateral lesions of the ventral occipito-temporal cortex but spared dorsal LO. HJA's recognition of visual objects was impaired. Nevertheless, his tactile recognition was preserved. W

Study of the human visual cortex: direct cortical evoked potentials and stimulation.

The authors studied the visual cortex of 15 patients undergoing studies for medically intractable epilepsy. Although the subdural and strip electrode placement varied in each of these patients, there were enough electrodes over the visual cortex to complete studies involving evoked potentials and direct cortical stimulation. Visual evoked potentials were elicited using two check sizes (50 and 16 min) for pattern reversal studies, 50 min checks for on-off stimulation, 50 min checks for horizontal and vertical hemifields and simple flash for the VEP. These studies demonstrated that the pattern r

Direct intracranial recording of body-selective responses in human extrastriate visual cortex.

We recorded intracranial local field potentials (iLFPs) in right extrastriate visual cortex of a patient prior to surgery for epilepsy. Visual evoked potentials revealed a highly selective response to images of bodies, relative to faces, mammals, and tools, which was restricted to a focal region in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex that corresponds to the location of the extrastriate body area (EBA). Body-selective activity started around 190 ms and peaked 260 ms post-stimulus onset. These findings provide the first direct electrophysiological evidence for an early visual processing stage in

Topographical representation of binocular depth in the human visual cortex using fMRI.

We used binocular stimuli to define how the visual location of stereoscopic depth structure maps topographically onto the human visual cortex. The main stimulus consisted of a circular disk of dots, most at zero-disparity, against which a single quadrant was defined with changing disparity ('correlated' disparity), and moved around the visual field. The second stimulus had exactly the same structure, except that the disparity in the quadrant was 'anticorrelated,' that is black dots in one eye were paired with white dots in the other. Unlike the correlated stimulus, this 'anticorrelated' stimul

Estimating linear cortical magnification in human primary visual cortex via dynamic programming.

Human primary visual cortex is organized retinotopically, with adjacent locations in cortex representing adjacent locations on the retina. The spatial sampling in cortex is highly nonuniform: the amount of cortex devoted to a unit area of retina decreases with increasing retinal eccentricity. This sampling property can be quantified by the linear cortical magnification factor, which is expressed in terms of millimeters of cortex per degree of visual angle. In this paper, we present a new method using dynamic programming and fMRI retinotopic eccentricity mapping to estimate the linear cortical

Selective magnetization transfer ratio decrease in the visual cortex following optic neuritis.

Patients with clinically isolated syndromes suggestive of multiple sclerosis have evidence for abnormality in normal appearing grey matter detected using the magnetization transfer ratio (MTR), a quantitative MRI measure. One potential mechanism for the decreased grey matter MTR (GM MTR) observed is trans-synaptic morphological abnormality secondary to demyelinating lesions that are in an anatomically linked pathway but remote location. We investigated this potential association by studying the location of abnormalities using voxel-based analysis of GM MTR maps in a group of 80 patients studie

Temporal kinetics of prefrontal modulation of the extrastriate cortex during visual attention.

Single-unit, event-related potential (ERP), and neuroimaging studies have implicated the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in top-down control of attention and working memory. We conducted an experiment in patients with unilateral PFC damage (n = 8) to assess the temporal kinetics of PFC-extrastriate interactions during visual attention. Subjects alternated attention between the left and the right hemifields in successive runs while they detected target stimuli embedded in streams of repetitive task-irrelevant stimuli (standards). The design enabled us to examine tonic (spatial selection) and phasic (fe

Topographic plasticity in primary visual cortex is mediated by local corticocortical connections.

The placement of monocular laser lesions in the adult cat retina produces a lesion projection zone (LPZ) in primary visual cortex (V1) in which the majority of neurons have a normally located receptive field (RF) for stimulation of the intact eye and an ectopically located RF (displaced to intact retina at the edge of the lesion) for stimulation of the lesioned eye. Animals that had such lesions for 14-85 d were studied under halothane and nitrous oxide anesthesia with conventional neurophysiological recording techniques and stimulation of moving light bars. Previous work suggested that a cand

Perceptual segregation of overlapping shapes activates posterior extrastriate visual cortex in man.

Objects in natural scenes are rarely seen in isolation, but are usually overlapping or partially occluding other objects. To recognize individual objects, the visual system must be able to segregate overlapping objects from one another. Evidence from lesions in humans and monkeys suggest that perceptual segregation of occluded or overlapping objects involves extrastriate visual cortex. In monkeys, area V4 has been shown to play an important role in recognizing occluded or poorly salient shapes. In humans, a retinotopic homologue of ventral V4 (V4v) has been described, but it is not known wheth

From attentional gating in macaque primary visual cortex to dyslexia in humans.

Selective attention is an important aspect of brain function that we need in coping with the immense and constant barrage of sensory information. One model of attention (Feature Integration Theory) that suggests an early selection of spatial locations of objects via an attentional spotlight would also solve the 'binding problem' (that is how do different attributes of each object get correctly bound together?). Our experiments have demonstrated modulation of specific locations of interest at the level of the primary visual cortex both in visual discrimination and memory tasks, where the actual

Pure alexia: clinical-pathologic evidence for a lateralized visual language association cortex.

Traditional views of pure alexia have held that the disorder results from a disconnection between the secondary visual cortices of both hemispheres and the angular gyrus of the dominant hemisphere. Evidence has accumulated, however, suggesting the importance of the posterior inferior temporal area in visual language processing. We describe clinical-pathological support for the presence of a lateralized visual language association area residing in the dominant posterior inferior temporal lobe.

Afferent connections of the prelunate visual association cortex (areas V4 and DP).

The afferent and efferent connections of the prelunate visual association area V4 of macaque monkeys were investigated by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. The specific thalamic afferents from the dorsolateral segment of the medial pulvinar and the lateral segment of the inferior pulvinar were topographically organized. A band of cells was labelled in the intralaminar nuclei (nucl. centr. med. and lat., reaching into LD and the most dorsal part of VL), and a few cells in the interlaminar layers of the lateral geniculate body. Other diencephalic afferents included the claustrum,

Columnar specificity of intrinsic horizontal and corticocortical connections in cat visual cortex.

A prominent and stereotypical feature of cortical circuitry in the striate cortex is a plexus of long-range horizontal connections, running for 6-8 mm parallel to the cortical surface, which has a clustered distribution. This is seen for both intrinsic cortical connections within a particular cortical area and the convergent and divergent connections running between area 17 and other cortical areas. To determine if these connections are related to the columnar functional architecture of cortex, we combined labeling of the horizontal connections by retrograde transport of rhodamine-filled latex
