Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Two Technology-assisted Vocal Interventions for Older Adults Living in a Residential Facility.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An increasing number of older adults are seeking behavioral voice therapy to manage their voice problems. Poor adherence to voice therapy is a known problem across all treatment-seeking populations. Given age-related physical and cognitive impairments and multiple chronic conditions, older adults are more susceptible to low adherence to behavioral therapies. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of an at-home, vocal training intervention for older adults without a known voice disorder living in a senior living community, as well as compare the effects of

Pain in popular singers.

PURPOSE: To identify and characterize the presence of body pains in popular singers, to observe the differences in the reported pains according to gender, and to relate with data regarding vocal behavior and usage in this population. METHODS: A self-explanatory questionnaire was applied to 100 popular singers (50 men and 50 women), in order to collect information about personal identification, voice use and presence of pains. Pains were divided into two groups: proximal pains (TMA, tongue, throat, nape, shoulders, neck, and pain during speech), and distal pains (arms, back/column, chest, hand

Electroglottogram-based estimation of vocal economy: 'quasi-output-cost ratio'.

Impact stress (IS) has been regarded as the main loading factor in voice production. To quantify the cost of voice production, an output-cost ratio (OCR) was proposed, which concerns acoustic output (pressure P) in relation to IS: OCR = 20 log P(sup)/P(0) - 20 log IS/IS(0) [1,2]. IS is difficult to measure directly in humans. However, it has been found to correlate with closed quotient (CQ, closed time/period length) measured by electroglottogram (CQ(EGG)) [3]. The present study proposes a noninvasive estimate of OCR, the quasi-output-cost ratio (QOCR): (sound pressure level (SPL)/CQ(EGG)) x (

Analysis of Supraglottic Activity during Vocalization in Flamenco Singers.

INTRODUCTION: Flamenco is a traditional music originally from Andalusia in southern Spain. Some of the vocal resources used in Flamenco have components of voice distortion and other voice qualities that could sound like hyperfunctional voice productions. The present study aimed at observing supraglottic activity in flamenco singers while engaged in singing at various degrees of pitch and loudness and while engaged in realizing phonatory tasks. METHODS: A total of eighteen flamenco singers with at least 5 years of voice training were recruited. Flexible endoscopic voice evaluations were record

Normalization of voice in spasmodic dysphonia during transient global amnesia.

We report on the case of a 69-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease and long-standing history of spasmodic dysphonia that reversed during an episode of transient global amnesia (TGA). To our knowledge, this phenomenon has not been reported before. We suggest possible mechanisms by which the pathophysiology of dystonia could reverse during TGA.

Psychological profile of dysfunctional dysphonia.

A high degree of emotional maladjustment can be detected in dysfunctional dysphonia. In these patients, it is not rare to observe an immediate resolution of the phoniatric disorder, but it is equally as common to identify a significant rate of recurrence (> 10%) in the short and long term. This phenomenon may be due to poor adaptive ability in the presence of mood disorders. Aims of this study were: a. selection of a suitable instrument to identify "minor" and "major" symptoms of psychiatric nature in dysphonic subjects; b. evaluation of profile of mood disorders in dysfunctional dysphonic adu

Etiology and treatment of psychogenic voice disorder: results of a follow-up study of thirty patients.

It is generally accepted that psychogenic voice disorder (PVD) is a result of psychosocial stress; however, systematic studies of etiological factors in this condition are few. Furthermore, although immediate effects of therapy are estimated to be good, relapses are frequent, and the long-term effects of therapy are not known. The present prospective and longitudinal study on 30 patients was thus focused on possible etiological factors, the course of therapy, and the long-term results of therapy for PVD. The results indicate that interpersonal conflicts related to family and work are of basic

[Vocal folds paresis -- our experience in diagnostics and treatment].

In the years 1989-1992 we diagnosed 148 cases of recurrent nerve paresis. There were 78 cases of iatrogenic paresis, mainly caused by thyroid surgery and cardiosurgery. In 48 cases we found the diseases which caused paresis (mainly cancers and lesions of central nervous system). In 22 cases we have not found the cause of the paresis. We used videostroboscopy for diagnostic and monitoring therapy. This method seems to be very valuable because provides very good magnified image of the larynx and serves perfect documentation. The return of mucosal wave is the first sign of reinnervation of vocal

Acoustic analysis of functional dysphonia: before and after voice therapy (accent method).

Ten patients who were referred to a speech pathologist for functional voice disorders were treated with voice therapy using the accent method. The vocal folds were normal except in three females who had moderate bilateral nodules. The voices were analyzed acoustically before and after treatment. Of the parameters tested, pitch perturbation quotient, amplitude perturbation quotient, normalized noise energy for 1-4 kHz, and fundamental frequency showed significant improvement.

An endoscopic technique for restoration of voice after laryngectomy.

Reports of restoration of voice after total laryngectomy include diversion of exhaled pulmonary air though planned or spontaneous fistulae with a variety of modified tracheal cannulas and valves. Limitations of these techniques include aspiration, scar closure of the shunts, wound complications, and failure to achieve voice consistently. We report a two-year experience with an endoscopic method using a unique valved prosthesis eliminating complicated surgical reconstructions, aspiration, and stenosis. Fifty-four of 60 patients (90%) achieved fluent voices with one deglutition problem. Radiatio

Impact of an auditory hallucinations simulation on trainee and newly qualified clinical psychologists: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study.

Simulation training is an effective teaching tool enabling learners to gain a subjective understanding of a range of skills. Our aim in this study was to pilot and evaluate a newly designed simulation of auditory hallucinations as a future training tool for clinicians. This was a mixed-methods study in two parts. In Phase 1, trainee and qualified clinical psychologists (N = 25) attended the London-based immersive art exhibition, Altered States of Consciousness, which included an auditory hallucinations simulation. The exhibition aimed to improve understanding of what it feels like to hear voic

Effects of Occupation-Specific Vocal Stress on the Mental Health of Day Care Teachers.

INTRODUCTION: Kindergarten teachers are exposed to numerous kinds of strains, such as noise, which can negatively affect their voices. This cross-sectional study investigates whether and to what extent the profession-specific high vocal demand is associated with the educators' mental health. METHODS: One hundred and ninety-two kindergarten teachers from Magdeburg, Germany and its surrounding areas aged 43.4 ± 12.8 years, voluntarily participated in a survey. Vocal demand and vocal demand response, general strain factors, and mental health were assessed by using questionnaires (self-check on v
