Lead and Other Trace Element Levels in Brains of Croatian Large Terrestrial Carnivores: Influence of Biological and Ecological Factors.

Trace element pollution can adversely affect the brains of individuals and thus impact the entire population of apex predators, such as large European carnivores. We assessed exposure to prominent neurotoxicants As, Cd, Hg and Pb by measuring their brain stem levels in brown bears (n = 114), grey wolves (n = 8), Eurasian lynx (n = 3), and golden jackals (n = 2) sampled in 2015-2022 in Croatia. The highest of the non-essential elements was the Pb level in the bears' brains (median, Q1-Q3; 11.1, 7.13-24.1 μg/kg wet mass), with 4% of animals, all subadults, exceeding the established normal bovine

Brain, Craniofacial, and Dental Lesions of a Free-ranging Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) Implicated in a Human Attack in Minnesota, USA.

We describe significant brain, craniofacial, and dental lesions in a free-ranging wolf (Canis lupus) involved in a human attack. On postmortem examination, the wolf presented asymmetric atrophy and bone remodeling affecting the mandible, incisive, maxilla, lacrimal, palatine, frontal, and ethmoid bones. There was an asymmetrical skeletal malocclusion and dental abnormalities including rotated, malpositioned, partially erupted teeth, and an odontogenic cyst associated with an unerupted canine tooth. Brain changes were bilateral loss and atrophy of extensive cortex regions including olfactory bu

Molecular identification of cryptic cysticercosis: Taenia ovis krabbei in wild intermediate and domestic definitive hosts.

The complex life cycle of taeniids represents an ideal model of a multi-host system. The complexity of these parasites can therefore cover the epidemiological issues of the interface between wild and domestic animals, especially once spatial overlap between wild and domestic definitive and intermediate hosts occurs. Here we use the occurrence of Taenia ovis krabbei in two model areas as an example of this epidemiological complexity. In two contiguous areas in the Italian northern Apennines, two hunted roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) showed numerous cysticerci in the muscles of their whole body

[Production of the monoclonal antibodies to the rabies virus nucleoprotein].

Five hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for the nucleocapsid protein of the rabies virus were obtained through the fusion of the SP2/0 murine myeloma cells with splenocytes of BALB/c mice immunized with fixed rabies virus (CVS strain). All hybridomas secret MAbs of the IgG class that display different specificity to the nucleocapsids of rabies and rabies-related viruses. MAbs 2ell showed the specificity for the prevalent in Russia rabies viruses that are similar to commercially available anti-rabies conjugate.

Detection of Ehrlichia canis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor marginatus from sylvatic environments in Southern Italy.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) represent an increasing threat to both human and animal health, driven by the expanding distribution and abundance of tick populations, even in regions traditionally considered unsuitable for their development. Among TBPs, Ehrlichia canis is primarily known as the causative agent of canine ehrlichiosis, mainly transmitted by the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. However, recent evidence indicates a broader host range, including potential zoonotic transmission to humans. In this study, adult ticks were collected from carcasses of domestic and wild animals and

Updates on Rabies virus disease: is evolution toward "Zombie virus" a tangible threat?

Human rabies disease is caused by Rabies Lyssavirus, a virus belonging to Rhabdoviridae family. The more frequent means of contagion is through bites of infected mammals (especially dogs, but also bats, skunks, foxes, raccoons and wolves) which, lacerating the skin, directly inoculate virus-laden saliva into the underlying tissues. Immediately after inoculation, the Rabies virus enters neural axons and migrates along peripheral nerves towards the central nervous system, where it preferentially localizes and injuries neurons of brainstem, thalamus, basal ganglia and spinal cord. After an initia

Translocation of dead or alive bacteria from mucosa to joints and epiphyseal bone-marrow: facts and hypotheses.

The recent demonstration that DNA from several mucosal bacteria, including Prevotella spp, could be found in numerous tissues (mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, serum, liver, lung, eye and ankle joints), either in HLA-B27 rats with or without arthritis, or control rats without HLA-B27, could be a revolution in our understanding of spondyloarthritis and close disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis. Indeed, similar translocations of dead or alive bacteria or fungi from mucosa to joints, could contribute to the onset and flares of inflammatory rheumatisms. This state of the art article addresses

OCA2 splice site variant in German Spitz dogs with oculocutaneous albinism.

We investigated a German Spitz family where the mating of a black male to a white female had yielded three puppies with an unexpected light brown coat color, lightly pigmented lips and noses, and blue eyes. Combined linkage and homozygosity analysis based on a fully penetrant monogenic autosomal recessive mode of inheritance identified a critical interval of 15 Mb on chromosome 3. We obtained whole genome sequence data from one affected dog, three wolves, and 188 control dogs. Filtering for private variants revealed a single variant with predicted high impact in the critical interval in LOC100

Evaluation of a commercial multispecies rapid test for anti-Leishmania infantum antibodies in unconventional animal species.

Leishmania infantum is a vector-borne protozoan causing zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean basin, where dogs are the primary reservoir. However, infection in various domestic and wild mammals raises questions about their epidemiological roles. Reliable diagnosis in non-canine species remains challenging, as most serological assays are developed for dogs and cats. This study evaluated a commercially available multispecies rapid immunochromatographic test (Uranotest® Leishmania feline) for detecting anti-Leishmania antibodies in a diverse panel of domestic and non-domestic anim

Zoological gardens as a neglected One Health interface for tigecycline-resistant Escherichia coli.

The tigecycline resistance gene tet(X4) is increasingly reported from food-producing animals and humans, but its circulation at wildlife-environment interfaces, including zoos, remains poorly resolved. Here, we combined systematic sampling of zoo animals and zoo-associated environments with comparative genomics against a global collection of 1102 tet(X)-positive Escherichia coli genomes to characterize the occurrence, genomic context and potential dissemination of tet(X4) in zoological settings. We recovered 60 tet(X4)-positive isolates (58 E. coli and two Enterobacter hormaechei) from 188 sam

Incidence of gastrointestinal helminth parasites of free-ranging domestic dogs from the web valley, Bale mountains National park, Ethiopia.

Domestic dogs (DDs), Canis lupus familiaris, are known carriers of pathogens that can spread globally to wildlife and humans. The transmission of infectious diseases from dogs poses a significant threat to Ethiopian wolves (EWs), Canis simensis, because of their shared environment with dogs and local people. Although some studies have examined EW parasites, the prevalence of helminth parasites in free-ranging DDs in Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) is relatively understudied. This study aims to assess the prevalence of helminth parasites in free-ranging DDs in the Web Valley, BMNP, Ethiopia

First description of Blastocystis sp. and Entamoeba sp. infecting zoo animals in the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau area, China.

Protozoan parasites are a well-known threat to human health, particularly for people working at or visiting zoos, and potentially cause zoonotic diseases in humans. Captive wildlife may be potential reservoirs for human infection with protozoan parasites. Therefore, focusing on zoonotic protozoan infections in zoo animals is critical. However, there is no report on this topic in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau region. In this study, a total of 167 and 103 fecal samples were collected from 12 animal species from Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Park in winter and summer, respectively, to detection th

Epidemiological and genetic studies suggest a common Leishmania infantum transmission cycle in wildlife, dogs and humans associated to vector abundance in Southeast Spain.

Leishmania infantum infection was investigated in 202 wild carnivores, rodents and lagomorphs in Southeast Spain using a real-time PCR (rtPCR) in skin and organ samples, mostly spleen. Lesions compatible with leishmaniosis were not observed in any of the animals. Prevalence defined as the percentage of rtPCR-positive animals was 32% overall, and 45% in foxes (n = 69), 30% in rabbits (n = 80) and stone martens (n = 10), 19% in wood mice (n = 16), 0% in black rats (n = 10) and ranged between 0% and 100% in other minoritarian species including badgers, wild cats, wolves, raccoons, genets and hare

Epidemiological aspects of canine visceral leishmaniosis in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

An epidemiological study to examine the sero-prevalence of zoonotic visceral leishmaniosis (ZVL) among domestic and wild canines in endemic foci of Iran was carried out during 1999-2003 to assess the distribution of the disease and the possible association between infection in dogs, wild canines and people. Anti-leishmanial antibodies were detected by the direct agglutination test (DAT). Parasitological study was performed for all captured wild canines and were detected in some of the seropositive dogs with specific clinical signs (n=107). Serum samples (n=1568) were collected from domestic do

Elucidating the role played by bone marrow in visceral leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a widespread group of infectious diseases that significantly impact global health. Despite high prevalence, leishmaniasis often receives inadequate attention in the prioritization of measures targeting tropical diseases. The causative agents of leishmaniasis are protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus, which give rise to a diverse range of clinical manifestations, including cutaneous and visceral forms. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), the most severe form, can be life-threatening if left untreated. Parasites can spread systemically within the body, infecting a range of organs

Canine circovirus and Canine adenovirus type 1 and 2 in dogs with parvoviral enteritis.

Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) is one of the most relevant pathogens associated with enteritis in dogs and is frequently reported in association with the detection of other pathogens in faeces. In this study the concomitant presence of Canine circovirus (CanineCV) and Canine adenovirus (CAdV) DNA in faecal or intestine samples of 95 dogs with parvovirus enteritis sampled in Italy (1995-2017) was investigated and the viruses identified were genetically characterised. Potential correlations with the antigenic variant of CPV-2 and with signalment data and outcome were evaluated. Twenty-eight of

Relaxin: a hormonal aid to diagnose pregnancy status in wild mammalian species.

In the beginning of 1960s, seminal studies characterizing circulating concentrations of immunoreactive relaxin in companion dogs and evaluating the differences in concentrations among pregnant, nonpregnant, and pseudopregnant bitches indicated the potential for relaxin to be applied clinically as a diagnostic aid to detect pregnancy status in wild animal species. A brief historical overview of the nature of relaxin and early work to develop and validate immunologic methods to analyze relaxin in the blood of rodents and pigs is initially discussed, which is followed by a summary of the developm

Ancient origin and genetic segregation of canine circovirus infecting arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in Svalbard and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in Northern Norway.

Canine circovirus (CanineCV) is a relatively new viral species, belonging to the family Circoviridae, whose pathogenic role is still uncertain. Since its first description in one domestic dog in 2011 from the USA, several reports have been documenting its distribution worldwide. Recently, CanineCV was also detected in wild animals such as wolves, foxes and badgers. In order to investigate the presence and the genetic characteristics of CanineCV in foxes of Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions, the presence of CanineCV DNA in internal organs (liver and spleen) of 51 arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) from
