Writing tremor secondary to ischemic stroke: a report on a case with a remarkable response to topiramate.

UNLABELLED: Writing tremor (WT) is a task-specific tremor that occurs only or mostly while writing with the dominant hand. Secondary cases are extremely uncommon. We report on a patient who, after developing a WT after an ischemic stroke, had a remarkable response to topiramate (TPM). CASE: A 65-year-old right-handed man with a history of arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease presented dizziness and headache followed by a loss of consciousness and then a right hemiparesis. He regained his strength on the fifth day. Fourteen days after stroke, he developed a WT as wel

Sensitive Training Through Body Awareness to Improve the Writing of Patients with Writer's Cramp.

The aim of this article is to evaluate if body awareness is important to improve the writing ability before using the splints. Twelve patients with writer's cramp were evaluated by a specialist in movement disorders. The Burke-Fahn-Marsden Scale (BFM), the Jedynak Protocol and the Analog Pain Scale were used. The rehabilitation training was administered over an eight-week period, in two phases of four weeks each, twice a week. Each session would last 60 minutes. A significant improvement was shown, not only in the motor, but also in the pain perception, through the BFM scale, the Jedynak Proto

Case writing as a vehicle for promoting cultural competency: a retrospective, descriptive qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: A variety of approaches are available that provide cultural competency education for practicing physicians. There is, however, still a need for additional, innovative approaches that address continuing education and professional improvement regarding cultural competency for physicians after their training. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential impact on established clinicians of writing an extended case narrative on cultural competency. METHODS: We conducted structured interviews of physician contributors (n = 14) to a book of cases on cultural competency. Authors were invited to co

Reaching and writing movements: sensitive and reliable tools to measure genetic dystonia in children.

The aim of this study was to provide a quantitative assessment of pure dystonia in a group of children. Kinematic and muscular characteristics of unconstrained movements of the upper limb, reaching and writing, were investigated. During reaching, the distinguishing factors of dystonic movement were reduced velocity, loss of muscular activation focalization, and impairment of rest-movement modulation. Muscular parameters were able to linearly discriminate the different levels of severity. These results support the hypothesis that basal ganglia dysfunction is responsible for compromising the mot

Neurocognitive stability in Asperger syndrome, ADHD, and reading and writing disorder: a pilot study.

Boys with Asperger syndrome (n=20), attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (n=20), and reading and writing disorder (n=20) were followed up and retested on several neuropsychological measures 1 to 2 years after initial assessments. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) Full Scale, Verbal, and Performance IQ scores remained stable for all diagnostic groups. Kaufman factors and 'fluid' and 'crystallized' abilities were also stable measures. Subtest stability over time, was slightly more variable. There was a tendency for the group with Asperger syndrome to deteriorate over time w

[Treatment of reading and writing disorders after the primary grades: application and evaluation of a concept].

An empirical investigation is described which demonstrates the effectiveness of a program for dyslexic children (n = 50). The program was used with small groups of approximately 6 children within the school setting and continued for a period of 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 school years. The entire investigation lasted 5 years, so it was possible to repeat the treatment program in other schools, and additional schools participated by providing control groups. The criterion used to test for treatment effects was improvement in spelling on a standardized test after the participation in the program. The results

Writing by proxy: Authentic authorship in the era of AI-powered communication of scientific knowledge.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping biomedical research as both a key analytical tool and an efficient copyeditor. Large language models and related algorithms can help investigators sift through the ever-expanding bodies of scientific literature, connect fragmented biological and clinical datasets, and uncover/recognize meaningful patterns buried within complex multidimensional data. Beyond the bench, these tools can improve and refine manuscript architecture and streamline the flow of information by honing the articulation of simple or complex scientific ideas and sharpening the clarit

AI-mediated writing and durable learning: a psychological theory of calibration, bypassing and uptake.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-mediated writing provides a critical case for educational psychology because it reveals how learners regulate cognition, effort, confidence, motivation, and beliefs about competence when fluent external support is available. In English as a foreign language (EFL) writing, such support can correct grammar, reformulate sentences, suggest organization, and sustain revision dialogs with learners who may not have immediate access to human feedback. These affordances invite a tempting inference: better AI-assisted drafts indicate better learning. This Hypothesis and Theo

Application of the structured analysis of written language tool to the writing of deaf Chinese students.

Limited access to spoken and signed language is a worldwide phenomenon affecting deaf children. Language delay caused by impeded language acquisition has negative cascading effects on deaf children's learning and development. In the event of stymied language development, deaf students exhibit highly errored writing and commit errors unseen in the writing of hearing students. There is a need for specialized tools to evaluate and monitor the progress of deaf students' written language in ways that can inform instruction. The Structured Analysis of Written Language (SAWL), developed for this purp

Co-Occurrence of Reading and Writing Difficulties: The Application of the Interactive Dynamic Literacy Model.

This article presents the application of the interactive dynamic literacy (IDL) model (Kim, 2020b) toward understanding difficulties in learning to read and write. According to the IDL model, reading and writing are part of communicative acts that draw on largely shared processes and skills as well as unique processes and skills. As such, reading and writing are dissociable but interdependent systems that have hierarchical, interactive, and dynamic relations. These key tenets of the IDL model are applied to the disruption of reading and writing development to explain co-occurrence of reading-w

Electrochemical electron beam lithography: Write, read, and erase metallic nanocrystals on demand.

We develop a solution-based nanoscale patterning technique for site-specific deposition and dissolution of metallic nanocrystals. Nanocrystals are grown at desired locations by electron beam-induced reduction of metal ions in solution, with the ions supplied by dissolution of a nearby electrode via an applied potential. The nanocrystals can be "erased" by choice of beam conditions and regrown repeatably. We demonstrate these processes via in situ transmission electron microscopy using Au as the model material and extend to other metals. We anticipate that this approach can be used to deposit m

Writing on Pigments in Natural History and Art Technology in Sixteenth-Century Germany and Switzerland.

Renaissance painters used a number of inorganic color materials. The development of mineralogy as a discipline opened a new discourse on mineral pigments. Agricola and other naturalists were familiar with the contemporary writings on art technology, but their focus was different. Therefore, the exchange of knowledge between these two color worlds remained selective. One possible meeting point was the Kunstkammer where the study of natural objects and materials was combined with an interest in the manual execution of a painting.

Copying skills in relation to word reading and writing in Chinese children with and without dyslexia.

Because Chinese character learning typically relies heavily on rote character copying, we tested independent copying skill in third- and fourth-grade Chinese children with and without dyslexia. In total, 21 Chinese third and fourth graders with dyslexia and 33 without dyslexia (matched on age, nonverbal IQ, and mother's education level) were given tasks of copying unfamiliar print in Vietnamese, Korean, and Hebrew as well as tests of word reading and writing, morphological awareness, rapid automatized naming (RAN), and orthographic processing. All three copying tasks distinguished dyslexic chi

Writing kinematics and pen forces in writer's cramp: effects of task and clinical subtype.

OBJECTIVE: Writer's Cramp (WC) is defined as a task-specific form of focal-hand-dystonia generating hypertonic muscle co-contractions resulting in impaired handwriting. Little is known about kinematic and dynamic characteristics in handwriting in the different subtypes of WC. METHODS: In this study, kinematic and force analyses were used to compare handwriting capacity of 14 simple, 13 dystonic WC-patients and 14 healthy subjects. The effect of task-complexity was investigated using a simple repetitive writing-task, writing pairs of letters, a sentence and copying a text. RESULTS: In general
