Role of carbon nanotubes in boosting photocatalytic hydrogen production and pollutants degradation within S-Scheme g-C3N4/ZnO nanocomposite.

In this study, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified g-C3N4/ZnO photocatalytic nanocomposite was synthesized through in-situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles on the CNT-loaded graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to evaluate its hydrogen production and dye degradation capabilities. The disc-like ZnO nanoparticles were spotted alongside the CNTs on the g-C3N4 surface with a specific surface area of 140.8 m2/g. The electrostatic interactions between conjugated bonds of g-C3N4 and π bonds of CNTs resulted in a well-bonded interface and high adsorption of CNTs. CNTs significantly increased the visible ligh

Insight in sulfadiazine degradation by peroxymonosulfate activated by polydopamine-derived nitrogen-doped carbon supported CoFe2O4: Co leaching inhibition and degradation enhancement.

Heterogeneous catalyst-mediated sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) showed excellent performance during antibiotics degradation. Spinel was a promising catalyst for SR-AOPs, but the secondary contamination due to metal ions leaching needed to be addressed. And the destruction of catalyst structure could lead to the reduction of catalytic activity and the difficulty of recovery. Thus, a novel nitrogen-doped carbon (NC)-supported CoFe2O4 (CoFe2O4@NC) was synthesized as the activator of PMS for sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation under low Co leaching conditions. The consequen

Delivery of Cu(II) and Mn(II) by polydopamine-modified nanoparticles for combined photothermal and chemotherapy.

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has been recognized as an emerging therapeutic strategy. It has attracted considerable attention in recent years as it can generate the most harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS)-hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through the Fenton reaction or a Fenton-like reaction under the catalysis of versatile metal cations, such as, Fe(II), Fe(III), Cu(I), Mn(II), and Mn(III). However, a large number of reducing species (e.g., GSH) in tumors inhibit the therapeutic effects of CDT. This study proposes a nanocarrier strategy that can release versatile metal cations in the initial stage to …

Antimicrobial, Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Effects of Essential Oil, Fatty Acids and Bioactive Compounds of Beta vulgaris var. crassa (Fodder Beet).

Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated under redox fluctuations in paddy soils are crucial for biogeochemical processes. Artificial humic acid (A-HA), as an emerging soil amendment, has been widely applied to improve soil quality. However, the impacts of A-HA on •OH generation and biogeochemical consequences remain under-explored. This study investigated the effects of A-HA on •OH generation, revealing that A-HA enhanced •OH accumulation from 43.93 to 142.30 μM upon oxygenation. The 0.5 M HCl-extracted Fe(II) was the dominant driver for •OH production via H2O2 as an intermediate. Multi-omics analys…

Redox status assessment in infertile patients with non-obstructive azoospermia undergoing testicular sperm extraction: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress (OS) is one of the most prevalent causes of sperm damage, through the toxic effects of endogenously generated hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, and hydroxyl radicals. Peripheral leukocytes represent a feasible model for studying the pathophysiology of OS-mediated homeostasis, which can be responsible for cell dysfunction and cell injury. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the redox status in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA), establishing the potential role exerted by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the genesis of testicular secretory injury. MATERIAL AND M…

Role of ultraviolet irradiation and oxidative stress in cataract formation-medical prevention by nutritional antioxidants and metabolic agonists.

PURPOSE: Cataract is a significant cause of visual disability with relatively high incidence. It has been proposed that such high incidence is related to oxidative stress induced by continued intraocular penetration of light and consequent photochemical generation of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide and singlet oxygen and their derivatization to other oxidants, such as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical. The latter two can also interact to generate singlet oxygen by Haber-Weiss reaction. It has been proposed that in addition to the endogenous enzymatic antioxidant enzymes, the p…

Reduced flavins promote oxidative DNA damage in non-respiring Escherichia coli by delivering electrons to intracellular free iron.

When cells are exposed to external H(2)O(2), the H(2)O(2) rapidly diffuses inside and oxidizes ferrous iron, thereby forming hydroxyl radicals that damage DNA. Thus the process of oxidative DNA damage requires only H(2)O(2), free iron, and an as-yet unidentified electron donor that reduces ferric iron to the ferrous state. Previous work showed that H(2)O(2) kills Escherichia coli especially rapidly when respiration is inhibited either by cyanide or by genetic defects in respiratory enzymes. In this study we established that these respiratory blocks accelerate the rate of DNA damage. The respir…

Cytotoxicity of amino alcohols to rat hepatoma-derived Fa32 cells.

Amino alcohols are used as emulsifying agents in dry-cleaning soaps, wax removers, cosmetics, paints and insecticides. The cytotoxicities of 12 amino alcohols, which differed in chain length, position of the amino and alcohol groups, and the presence of an additional phenyl group, were determined by the neutral red uptake inhibition assay with normally cultured, glutathione-depleted or antioxidant-enriched Fa32 rat hepatoma-derived cells. Glutathione depletion and antioxidant enrichment were achieved by including 50(M L-buthionine-S,R-sulphoximine (BSO) or 100(M (-tocopherol acetate (vitamin E

Analysis of Reactive Oxygen Species-Induced Cellular Damage in Cervical Cancer.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive oxygen-based molecules comprising hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anion, and singlet oxygen. These species are produced intracellularly and play an important role in cellular signaling and metabolism. Their high reactivity damages intracellular macromolecules such as lipids and DNA. In cancer biology, ROS display a dual role: they promote cancer cell proliferation at low to moderate levels, whereas excessive accumulation overwhelms antioxidant defenses, causing oxidative stress and apoptosis. This has resulted in therapeutic st…
