Biopolymer-based seed biopriming with fungal endophytes suppresses Fusarium wilt and modulates growth in tomato.

Biopolymer-based seed biopriming is an emerging strategy for delivering endophytic fungal biocontrol agents while maintaining seed viability and fungal persistence, yet the compatibility of carrier matrices with dark septate endophytes (DSE), and the potential of this fungal group against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL) in tomato, remain unexplored. Three biopolymer matrices - sodium alginate (SA), gum arabic (GA) and guar gum (GG) - were evaluated as carriers for ten endophytic fungal isolates: Torula sp. (BC01, BC11), Sordaria fimicola (BC06), Clarireedia calopus (BC17, BC18), Tr

Calcium in biopolymer-based food-packaging systems: Interfacial interactions, network regulation, and functional performance.

Biopolymer-based food-packaging films and related formats are widely investigated as alternatives to petroleum-derived plastics; however, their practical use remains limited by moisture sensitivity, weak wet integrity, insufficient barrier performance, and limited active functionality. Calcium functionalization provides a potential route to address some of these limitations through soluble Ca2+ salts or particulate Ca-based materials. This review critically examines Ca-functionalized biopolymer-based food-packaging systems using a structure-function-processing-safety framework. Natural-biopoly

Multiregulatory hydrogel supramolecular nanomedicine for reprogramming cartilage homeostasis in osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial degenerative joint disorder characterized by intricate interactions among oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, ultimately disrupting chondrocyte homeostasis and accelerating cartilage deterioration. Although advanced intra-articular biomaterial systems have improved local therapeutic delivery for OA, the rational integration of a multi-component bioactive core with a multifunctional carrier remains challenging. In this study, a multifunctional nanomedicine, K@BMT@HM, was developed by integrating a supramo

Comparative metagenomics indicates metabolic niche differentiation of benthic and planktonic Woeseiaceae.

BACKGROUND: Benthic microbiomes exhibit remarkable temporal stability, contrasting with the dynamic, substrate-driven successions of bacterioplankton. Nonetheless, understanding their role in carbon cycling and interactions between these two microbial communities is limited due to the complexity of benthic microbiomes. RESULTS: Here, we used a long-reads (LRs) metagenomic approach to examine benthic microbiomes and compared them to the microbiomes in the overlaying water column and on particles, sampled at the same site and time off the island Heligoland in the North Sea. Although the diversi

In Vitro Persistence Level Reflects In Vivo Antibiotic Survival of Natural Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates in a Murine Lung Infection Model.

Clinicians are increasingly confronted with the limitations of antibiotics to clear bacterial infections in patients. It has long been assumed that only antibiotic resistance plays a pivotal role in this phenomenon. Indeed, the worldwide emergence of antibiotic resistance is considered one of the major health threats of the 21st century. However, the presence of persister cells also has a significant influence on treatment outcomes. These antibiotic-tolerant cells are present in every bacterial population and are the result of the phenotypic switching of normal, antibiotic-sensitive cells. Per

Three novel marine species of the genus Reichenbachiella exhibiting degradation of complex polysaccharides.

Three novel strains designated ABR2-5T, BKB1-1T, and WSW4-B4T belonging to the genus Reichenbachiella of the phylum Bacteroidota were isolated from algae and mud samples collected in the West Sea, Korea. All three strains were enriched for genes encoding up to 216 carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), which participate in the degradation of agar, alginate, carrageenan, laminarin, and starch. The 16S rRNA sequence similarities among the three novel isolates were 94.0%-94.7%, and against all three existing species in the genus Reichenbachiella they were 93.6%-97.2%. The genome sizes of the stra

Fundamentals in applications of algae biomass: A review.

Algae play an extremely important ecological role. They form the basis of trophic webs, produce oxygen that allows the respiration of many of the organisms in aquatic environments, absorb CO2, and serve as refuge areas and habitats for thousands of species. Many species can also absorb organic pollutants from seawater. Algae have been used for many centuries by humans as a source of food, fertilizer, fodder, and for the extraction of compounds with antifungal, antiviral, anticancer, and antibacterial properties. More recently, some species have been used for the production of biofuels. It has

The effect of genetically modified platelet-derived growth factor-BB over-expressing mesenchymal stromal cells during core decompression for steroid-associated osteonecrosis of the femoral head in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one third of patients undergoing core decompression (CD) for early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) experience progression of the disease, and subsequently require total hip arthroplasty (THA). Thus, identifying adjunctive treatments to optimize bone regeneration during CD is an unmet clinical need. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB plays a central role in cell growth and differentiation. The aim of this study was to characterize mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) that were genetically modified to overexpress PDGF-BB (PDGF-BB-MSCs) in vitro and eval

The antimicrobial efficacy of silver on antibiotic-resistant bacteria isolated from burn wounds.

The antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a major concern to wound care because of their ability to resist many of the antibiotics used today to treat infections. Consequently, other antimicrobials, in particular ionic silver, are considered ideal topical agents for effectively helping to manage and prevent local infections. Little is known about the antimicrobial efficacy of ionic silver on antibiotic-resistant bacteria at different pH values. Consequently, in this study our aim was to evaluate the effect of pH on the antimicrobial efficacy of a silver alginate (SA) and a silver carboxymethyl cel

Biofilm formation by Pseudomonas putida KT2440 contributes to improve tomato drought stress resilience and priming for enhanced gene regulation.

Pseudomonas putida KT2440 is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), known to enhance tolerance to pathogen infection, but its role in drought stress mitigation remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to assess whether inoculation with KT2440 improves tomato tolerance to drought. Inoculation with the KT2440 wild type (WT) significantly improved ecophysiological drought stress responses by increasing leaf water potential and photosynthetic rate. It also resulted in an impact on the holobiont cell physiology through modulation of the activity signature of key enzymes of carbohydrate

Mesenchymal stem cells from perinatal tissues promote diabetic wound healing via PI3K/AKT activation.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a major complication of diabetes, often leading to poor healing outcomes with conventional treatments. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapies have emerged as a promising alternative, given their potential to modulate various pathways involved in wound healing. This study evaluates and compares the therapeutic potential of MSCs derived from perinatal tissues-human umbilical cord MSCs (hUCMSCs), human chorionic villi MSCs (hCVMSCs), and human decidua basalis MSCs (hDCMSCs)-in a diabetic wound healing model. METHODS: We performed in vitro and in v

Development of a 3D-3 co-culture microbead consisting of cancer-associated fibroblasts and human umbilical vein endothelial cells for the anti-tumor drug assessment of lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Drug resistance is a major challenge in the treatment of lung cancer. Increasing evidence indicates that the tumor microenvironment (TME), including cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and tumor endothelial cells (TECs), plays a significant role in determining the tumor sensitivity to therapeutic agents. There is, however, a dearth of models, two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D), that represent the in vivo interaction of tumor and stromal components in the TME. The purpose of this study was to use conditionally reprogrammed lung cancer cells (CRLCs), and then use sodium

3D-printed β-TCP/curcumin scaffolds as a local drug delivery system for bone tissue regeneration.

The growing clinical need for filling defects and bone voids has led to the development of scaffolds that stimulate bone regeneration and serve as temporary models for vascularised bone growth. Additionally, these scaffolds can function as drug delivery systems to reduce inflammatory processes associated with diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and bone cancer. Among the materials used to manufacture scaffolds,β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP, Ca3(PO4)2) stands out due to its excellent biocompatibility and chemical composition, closely resembling minerals from bon

Fundoplication versus post-operative medication for gastro-oesophageal reflux in children with neurological impairment undergoing gastrostomy.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurological impairments (NI) frequently experience feeding difficulties which can lead to malnutrition and growth failure. Gastrostomy feeding is now the preferred method of providing nutritional support to children with NI who are unable to feed adequately by mouth. Complications may arise as a result of gastrostomy placement and the development or worsening of gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) has been widely reported. This has led to the frequent use of surgical anti-reflux treatment in the form of a fundoplication, or other Anti-Reflux Procedures. Fundoplication is

Use of a paper-strip absorption method to measure the depth and volume of saliva retained in embrasures and occlusal fussae of the human dentition.

Embrasures and occlusal fossae are regions of the human dentition that readily retain saliva, as well as dental plaque and dietary substrates. In this study, a wax filling and weighing technique was used to determine the volumes of these irregularly shaped spaces, and a paper-strip absorption method was developed for measuring the thickness and amounts of saliva therein. The volumes were measured on dental stone models prepared from alginate impressions of the maxillary arches of each of eight individuals and on an acrylic maxillary denture representative of the shape and alignment of normal-s
