INTRODUCTION: Distal humerus fractures are fairly rare. But as our population ages, these fractures become more complex and the choice of treatment more delicate. Poor bone quality results in many technical problems and the fixation hardware stability remains at risk. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional recovery and morbidity of complex distal humerus fractures in elderly patients when treated with elbow prosthesis.
HYPOTHESIS: Good functional recovery can be achieved with a total joint replacement.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This series consisted of 20 patients (18 women and tw

BACKGROUND: Current total disc replacement (TDR) for lumbar spine requires an anterior approach for implantation but presents inherent limitations, including risks to the abdominal structures, as well as resection of the anterior longitudinal ligament. By approaching the spine laterally, it is possible to preserve the stabilizing ligaments, which are a natural restraint to excessive rotations and translations, and thereby help to minimize facet stresses. This less invasive approach also offers a biomechanical advantage of placement of the device over the ring apophysis bilaterally; importantly

: Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are common cartilage and joint diseases that globally affect more than 200 million and 20 million people, respectively. Several transcription factors have been implicated in the onset and progression of osteoarthritis, including Runx2, C/EBPβ, HIF2α, Sox4, and Sox11. Interleukin-1 β (IL-1β) leads to osteoarthritis through NF-ĸB, IκBζ, and the Zn2+-ZIP8-MTF1 axis. IL-1, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) play a major pathological role in rheumatoid arthritis through NF-ĸB and JAK/STAT pathways. Indeed, inhibitory reagents for IL-1, IL-6, and TNFα

BACKGROUND: The Bernese periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a widely used technique for the management of acetabular dysplasia and other hip deformities in adolescents and young adults. Originally, the approach was described with a release of both origins of the rectus femoris muscle1. In the more recently described rectus-sparing approach, both heads remain attached2,3. It has been proposed that this modification may decrease pain, ease postoperative rehabilitation, and avoid heterotopic ossifications, without limitations of the surgical overview.
DESCRIPTION: Both the original and the rectus-

UNLABELLED: Safe surgical dislocation with a trochanteric flip osteotomy has been shown to be a reliable technique that provides excellent exposure for treating femoral-head fractures with minimal complications. This technique also allows associated labral injuries and acetabular fractures to be treated through the same approach.
DESCRIPTION: The procedure is performed with use of a conventional Kocher-Langenbeck exposure with the patient in the lateral position. The trochanteric flip is performed, allowing exposure of the anterior capsule, which is incised to dislocate the head anteriorly. F

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY When treating tears of the distal biceps brachii muscle tendon, we repeatedly noticed a difference between the preoperative ultrasound findings and the operative findings. The aim of the study was to retrospectively correlate these findings in order to determine the sensitivity of the ultrasound examination in everyday orthopaedic practice. Moreover, we compared the results and complications of surgical treatment through two operative techniques used at our department. MATERIAL AND METHODS In the 2004-2016 period 20 patients underwent a surgery at our department for total

The toothless (tl) mutation in the rat is a naturally occurring, autosomal recessive mutation resulting in a profound deficiency of bone-resorbing osteoclasts and peritoneal macrophages. The failure to resorb bone produces severe, unrelenting osteopetrosis, with a highly sclerotic skeleton, lack of marrow spaces, failure of tooth eruption, and other pathologies. Injections of CSF-1 improve some, but not all, of these. In this report we have used polymorphism mapping, sequencing, and expression studies to identify the genetic lesion in the tl rat. We found a 10-base insertion near the beginning

OBJECT: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) has been approved for use in the lumbar spine in conjunction with the lumbar tapered cage. However, off-label use of this osteoinductive agent is observed with anterior fusion applications as well as with both posterior lumbar interbody fusion and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF). Complications using rhBMP-2 in the cervical spine have been reported. Although radiographic evidence of ectopic bone in the lumbar spine has been described following rhBMP-2 use, this finding was not previously believed to be of clinical re

BACKGROUND: Managing complicated acetabular fractures involving the quadrilateral plate (QLP) can be challenging for surgeons, especially when complicated by comminution and osteoporosis. Traditional implants do not provide sufficient fixed strength or a proper match. The new-type pre-contoured infrapectineal buttress plates may have drawbacks, such as inaccurate fitting on the medial surface of QLP and an inability to apply reversed compression force to resist medial displacement of femoral head. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to introduce a novel technique that utilizes a sp
