The aim of this work was to ascertain the different kinds of insertion of the upper head of the lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) on the temporomandibular joint and to clarify its physiology to understand its possible role in the dysfunction at the temporomandibular joint. Magnetic resonance imaging examinations were used in this work to achieve a direct view of the LPM on a large number of selected patients with dysfunction at the temporomandibular joint. The study population was composed of 92 patients, of whom 74 were women and 18 were men. Their age range was from 19 to 53 years (mean age, 31

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this longitudinal study was to compare the craniofacial growth changes in untreated subjects with Class II Division 1 malocclusion with those in subjects with normal (Class I) occlusion from the prepubertal through the postpubertal stages of development, as defined by a biological indicator of individual skeletal maturity (cervical vertebral maturation method).
METHODS: The Class II Division 1 sample consisted of 17 subjects (11 boys, 6 girls). The Class I sample also consisted of 17 subjects (13 boys, 4 girls). The lateral cephalograms of the subjects in both gro

A patient who is unconscious and paralysed has a condyle that is different from what it would be were he awake and the same force applied. The occlusion may relapse as a result of changes in condylar position immediately after the removal of intermaxillary fixation (IMF). Examination of the occlusion and an understanding of the changes secondary to a condylar displacement can identify it reliably during the operation. A study group (n=78) and a control group (n=74) were chosen randomly from patients listed for bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. No local anaesthetic was infiltrated so as not to

This retrospective series was intended to determine whether morphological disk findings in open and closed mouth magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be correlated with the time curves in axiography. In this series, 45 temporomandibular joints of 33 patients were subjected to a retrospective evaluation. Magnetic resonance images obtained with closed and open mouth and joint movements assessed by electronic axiography were analyzed. Disk morphology in MRI was classified as normal, partly flattened, partly thickened, or completely thickened. For the axiographic tracings, time curves of the free

The aim of this study was to find out whether there was a correlationship between the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-11, and IL-17 in synovial fluid and osseous changes in the condyle. The synovial fluid was obtained from 61 patients with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and seven healthy volunteers (controls). The concentrations of IL-6, IL-11, and IL-17 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. IL-6 was detected in 43 of 59 (73%), IL-11 in 23 of 52 (44%) and IL-17 in 14 of 51 (27%) samples of synovial fluid. The concentrations of IL-6 and IL-11 in the joints with

A patient with synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint extending to the preauricular skin, parotid, and infratemporal fossa was operated and followed with a stable remnant, for 2 years postoperatively. In light of literature and what the authors have learned from this case, the authors emphasize stage of the disease as a risk factor for recurrence. The long history of symptoms, calcified and conglomerated radiological appearance of the lesion, and extensive involvement of the joint and periarticular area of this case indicate a late-stage disease in which the metaplastic activit

The aim of this series of investigations was to study the effect of masticatory muscle function on the growth pattern and on the internal structure of the mandible during growth. The muscular and dentoskeletal growth adaptation to prolonged bite-raising and the role of the functional state of the masticatory muscles in this adaptation were also to be elucidated. Differences in masticatory muscle function were induced in young rats by altering the consistency of the diet. Bite-raising was produced by the insertion of posterior bite blocks. Morphometric analysis of the internal bone structures o

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have discussed a posterior displacement of the condyle as a possible risk factor for the development of disk displacements (DDs) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The objective of this study was to compare the posterior and anterior joint spaces in healthy TMJs with those of patients who present different forms of DDs.
STUDY DESIGN: The anterior and posterior joint spaces from 58 patients with unilateral or bilateral DD with reduction (DDR) or without reduction (DDNR) and from 30 healthy volunteers were measured with 3 sagittal magnetic resonance images (MRIs)

Changes in condylar mobility and radiographic changes were examined in 22 patients (26 joints) who had nonreducing disk displacement. The patients had no treatment for at least one year. Thirty joints in 15 persons with no current or previous temporomandibular joint symptoms served as a control. The clinical signs and symptoms tended to be less severe after one year. Condylar mobility increased significantly during this period, although it remained somewhat limited. There was no significant difference in frequency of radiographically discernible changes of the condyle between patients and cont

A tight cooperation between the orthodontist and oral surgeon is a key factor for success in orthognathic surgery. The quality of the final result is determined a great deal by the pre-operative model-surgery. The KDMMS is a planning tool which allows, even in the most complex cases, accurate and quick model-surgery. The two main components of the KDMMS are the double base plates and the model positioning system, which resemble a "fixation extérieure". The double base plates enable the operator to reproduce the original, pre-operative situation at all times. This allows multiple set-ups for on

The aim of the study was to investigate the morphologic modifications occurring in the synovial tissue after severe derangement of the articular structures with dislocation or perforation of the disks. Light microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunocytochemical investigations were performed on 10 disks. Arthroscopic examinations had documented adhesions between the diskal surfaces and the glenoid eminence or the condylar head in all the selected cases. Histologic examination showed a remarkable hyperplasia of the synovial tissue with the formation of prominent protrusions. An evident increase o

PURPOSE: This retrospective study reports the reoperation rate for failure after modified condylotomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A consecutive series from each of two surgeons constituted the study group of 361 joints in 235 patients. Reoperation rates were calculated for all joints and by type of disc displacement.
RESULTS: A second operation occurred in 4.2% of all joints. However, the cumulative rate of reoperation was 4.4%, because one of the joints required a third operation. Although the rate of reoperation varied (0% to 6.5%) according to the type of disc displacement, the differences we

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to measure the amount of new information contributed by temporomandibular joint tomograms beyond that anticipated by the patient's clinical presentation.
STUDY DESIGN: The results of a clinical examination and history, including a video of patient interview, and dental casts of 105 patients with a temporomandibular disorder were presented to a panel of general dentist evaluators with some experience in temporomandibular disorders. These evaluators then described the radiographic findings they anticipated. Lastly they examined temporomandibular joint t

This pilot study was undertaken to correlate clinical and MRI diagnoses in seven symptomatic TMJ dysfunction patients and to account, if possible, for the clinical improvement in the signs and symptoms after the use of a maxillary stabilizing splint. The symptomatic TMJs were evaluated by means of MRI prior to splint insertion. Sagittal open/closed, and coronal closed images were obtained with a 0.3 T Fonar MR Scanner. A follow-up MRI was taken after three months of splint therapy for the purposes of a comparative study. All subjects responded positively even at the early phase of splint treat

BACKGROUND: Using conventional complex facial fracture management principles, confirmation of adequate facial fracture reduction can be achieved only by obtaining a postoperative computed tomography (CT) scan. If the CT scan revealed any discrepancy in fracture alignment, additional procedures for correction may be required. The concept of intraoperative CT scanning provides immediate postreduction or intraoperative information that orients the surgeon to the potential need for additional maneuvers for improved fracture reduction and osseous fixation. We assessed the early technical feasibilit
