Effects of splint therapy in TMJ dysfunction: a study using magnetic resonance imaging.

This pilot study was undertaken to correlate clinical and MRI diagnoses in seven symptomatic TMJ dysfunction patients and to account, if possible, for the clinical improvement in the signs and symptoms after the use of a maxillary stabilizing splint. The symptomatic TMJs were evaluated by means of MRI prior to splint insertion. Sagittal open/closed, and coronal closed images were obtained with a 0.3 T Fonar MR Scanner. A follow-up MRI was taken after three months of splint therapy for the purposes of a comparative study. All subjects responded positively even at the early phase of splint treat

Sex differences in the estrogen-dependent regulation of temporomandibular joint remodeling in altered loading.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) diseases predominantly afflict women, suggesting a role of estrogen in the disease etiology. Previously, we determined that decreased occlusal loading (DOL) inhibited collagen type II (Col2) expression in the mandibular condylar cartilage (MCC) of female wild-type (WT) mice whereas no change was observed in males. This decrease in chondrogenesis was abolished by estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) deficiency in females. Therefore, the goal of this study was to examine the role of estradiol - ERβ signaling in mediating DOL effects in male mice to further deciph

Upregulation of proangiogenic factors expression in the synovium of temporomandibular joint condylar hyperplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Condylar hyperplasia (CH) is a complex disorder of the temporomandibular joint. Many studies have focused on cartilage proliferation, but the behavior of the synovium in CH is poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of angiogenic-associated factors in the synovium and to discuss the possible role of the synovium in CH progression. STUDY DESIGN: CH condylar tissues were stained by hematoxylin and eosin staining, and proliferative activity was confirmed by single-photon emission computed tomography. Synovial cells isolated from the temporoman

Condylar repositioning in bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with centric relation bite.

PURPOSE: Changes in the condylar position after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO) can cause many complications, such as condylar dysfunction and increased risk of relapse. This study evaluated a simple approach for condylar repositioning in BSSO as a method to rapidly obtain the patient's centric relation (CR) bite position without prefabricated equipment. METHODS: The study subjects included 9 patients (5 men and 4 women; mean age, 23.7 years) who underwent BSSO in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Hallym University hospital between December 2009 and March 201

Pierre Robin sequence and Treacher Collins hypoplastic mandible comparison using three-dimensional morphometric analysis.

Pierre Robin sequence and Treacher Collins syndrome are both associated with mandibular hypoplasia. It has been hypothesized, however, that the mandible may be differentially affected. The purpose of this study was to therefore compare mandibular morphology in children with Pierre Robin sequence with children with Treacher Collins syndrome using three-dimensional analysis of computed tomographic scans. A retrospective analysis was performed identifying children with Pierre Robin sequence and Treacher Collins syndrome undergoing computed tomography. Three-dimensional reconstruction was performe

Determination of craniofacial growth in patients with untreated Class III malocclusions and anterior crossbites using the centroid method.

The aim of this investigation was to assess average Class III craniofacial growth in Japanese males and females, using cross-sectional data from infancy to adulthood. Growth was analysed using the centroid method. Centroid G was geometrically calculated from the triangle Delta abc, which comprised the palatal, articulare-gnathion (Ar-Gn), and A-B planes. Lateral cephalograms were obtained of 323 Japanese males and 611 females aged 2 years or older but under 25 years of age. Each dataset was divided into 2 year intervals according to age and categorized into 10 developmental stages. One-way ana

Preserved costal cartilage homograft application for the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint has been a daunting problem in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Condylectomy with gap arthroplasty is the basic technique for treatment of the fully grown patient. In the past, reconstruction has primarily been accomplished with alloplastic materials or with autogenous tissue harvested from the patient. Joints reconstructed with alloplastic materials have been subject to complications such as acute infection and chronic inflammatory problems as a result of foreign-body reaction with the immune system. Biologic reconstruction with autogenous materials doe

Activation of α2A-adrenergic signal transduction in chondrocytes promotes degenerative remodelling of temporomandibular joint.

This study tested whether activation of adrenoreceptors in chondrocytes has roles in degenerative remodelling of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and to determine associated mechanisms. Unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) was established to induce TMJ degeneration in rats. Saline vehicle, α2- and β-adrenoreceptor antagonists or agonists were injected locally into the TMJ area of UAC rats. Cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone microarchitecture and the expression of adrenoreceptors, aggrecans, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and RANKL by chondrocytes were evaluated. Chondrocytes were stimulate

Conservative temporomandibular disorder management: what DO I do? -- frequently asked questions.

UNLABELLED: There are many myths and fallacies surrounding the conservative or non-surgical management of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD).This paper is not a treatise on splint design and does not champion any one particular treatment philosophy. It is, however, produced as the outcome of many years of lecturing and talking to fellow practitioners and represents the most frequently asked questions and common misconceptions encountered by the authors, who have addressed the topics raised with the intention of helping to avoid pitfalls. The common symptoms encountered in general

Reducing dietary loading decreases mouse temporomandibular joint degradation induced by anterior crossbite prosthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary loading has been reported to have an effect on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) remodeling via periodontal-muscular reflex. We therefore examined whether reducing dietary loading decreased TMJ degradation induced by the unilateral anterior crossbite prosthesis as we recently reported. METHODS: Forty 6-week-old female C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into two experimental and two control groups. One experimental and one control group received small-size diet and the other two groups received large-size diet. Unilateral anterior crossbite prosthesis was created in the two exp

[Aesthetic repercussions of the class II treatment on the profile: comparative study Distal Activ Concept (DAC)/Extra-Oral Force (EOF)].

In the past orthodontists frequently used extra-oral force to slow down skeletal growth in their treatment of Class II malocclusions; more modern practice relies less on applying distal force to the maxilla than on stimulating forward growth of the mandible. Does this change in therapeutic design have any repercussions in facial esthetics? To evaluate the impact of treatment on the appearance of the profile, we conducted a study with 64 patients in the adolescent dentition stage with a Class II, division 1 malocclusions. None had teeth extracted or preliminary orthodontic treatment. We divided

Three-dimensional analysis in facial asymmetry: comparison with model analysis and conventional two-dimensional analysis.

The purpose of this study was to compare a computed tomographic (CT) three-dimensional analysis with a model analysis to use it as diagnostic aid for the evaluation of occlusal plane tilting in facial asymmetry. Ten patients with facial asymmetry underwent CT three-dimensional examination, plaster cast analysis, and two-dimensional cephalometric analysis. The distance between a reference plane to the upper first molar and upper canine was measured on three-dimensional CT, on models, and on cephalograms to assess occlusal plane tilting. Measurements taken on three-dimensional CT were compared w
