Many practitioners find the complexity of facial growth overwhelming and thus merely observe and accept the clinical features of atypical growth and do not comprehend the long-term consequences. Facial growth and development is a strictly controlled biological process. Normal growth involves ongoing bone remodeling and positional displacement. Atypical growth begins when this biological balance is disturbed With the understanding of these processes, clinicians can adequately assess patients and determine the causes of these atypical facial growth patterns and design effective treatment plans.

The aim of this research was to study if changes in condyle position in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients could be a factor that is affected by resilient appliance therapy and if it influences the treatment outcome. The study investigated 48 patients randomly assigned to a treatment group (T group = 21 patients, using resilient appliance) or a control group (C group = 27 patients, using nonoccluding appliance). Changes in the condyle-fossa relationship (with and without the appliance) were determined in an MRI examination. Ten weeks after treatment, the treatment outcome was measured.

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is a standard procedure in orthognathic surgery. The aim of the present study was to perform a matched pair analysis (bad sagittal split versus regular sagittal split) regarding the functional and radiographic long-term results after BSSO. Of 110 cases of mandibular hypoplasy treated with BSSO, 7 cases of bad sagittal splits (Group A) were selected, clinically examined and matched to 7 cases where no bad split occurred (Group B). The Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporo Mandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD), condylar morphology scale (CMS) and ramus heigh

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the off-label use of an intraoral charge-coupled device (CCD) for extraoral transcranial radiography of the temporomandibular joint. Corrected linear tomograms and transcranial images made with conventional screen-film combinations and a CCD detector were compared with sectioned cadaver specimens. Radiation dosage, qualitative assessment of condylar degenerative features, and condylar position within the glenoid fossa of the 3 modalities were assessed and compared. The CCD method required special adjustments to achieve adequate quality, and it involved

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis frequently occurs succeeding untreated or not adequately treated mandible fractures. Treatment of this condition with combined condylectomy and silicon sheet/block application was investigated in the literature. Thirty-eight patients with temporomandibular joint ankylosis were included in this study, and postoperative results were presented. Mean preoperative and postoperative sixth-month interincisor opening values were 5.8 and 28.8 mm, respectively. In two patients (5.2%), another operation to remove silicon material was needed because of infection and expos

This study aimed to establish radiographical parameters concerning the tipping, the labiolingual positioning and the angulation of the maxillary permanent incisors in the mixed dentition. Three groups of 20 cephalograms and 20 orthopantomographic radiographs taken from children aging from 7 to 12 years old, with normal occlusion were compared. The Group I presented only the eruption of the central permanent incisors, the Group II presented both the central and lateral permanent incisors and the Group III presented central, lateral incisors and permanent canine teeth. The tipping and the labiol

This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of screw-based semi-rigid intermaxillary fixation (IMF) combined with a specially designed occlusal splint in the conservative treatment of paediatric mandibular condylar fractures. Thirteen paediatric patients with 20 sides of condylar fractures treated with semi-rigid IMF were analyzed retrospectively. Semi-rigid IMF was achieved by inserting self-drilling IMF screws into the anterior alveolar bone of the maxilla and mandible suspended with elastic bands. An occlusal splint with a molar fulcrum was used for functional repositioni

PURPOSE: Although endoscopically assisted transoral open reduction and internal fixation of condylar mandible fractures is currently a popular technique, the need for it and its benefits remains unclear. This prospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of open reduction and rigid internal fixation of subcondylar fractures of the mandible using a new small angulated screwdriver system without endoscopic assistance.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with 15 linear subcondylar fractures were treated using this intraoral approach from June 2007 through March 2010 at the Division of O

INTRODUCTION: Class II Division 2 malocclusion involves retroclined maxillary incisors and deep overbite, often accompanied by mandibular retrusion. "Unlocking" the mandible by proclining the maxillary incisors, correcting the deep bite, and expanding the maxillary arch has been used to treat this malocclusion. However, the impact of this treatment, using Invisalign® clear aligners, on condylar volume remains unclear. This study evaluates three-dimensional changes in condylar volume after using Invisalign® to unlock the mandible in Class II Division 2 growing patients.

OBJECTIVE: Compressive mechanical stress was applied to the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) affected by antigen-induced arthritis to assess the etiological factors of idiopathic condylar resorption.
METHODS: Following ovariectomy in 27 female rabbits, 12 received ovalbumin (OVA), 12 received phosphate-buffered saline, and three formed the control group. Each treated rabbit underwent an osteotomy, and a custom device was employed for one week postoperatively, with the length increased by 0.25 mm every 12 h to provide compressive mechanical stress to the TMJ. Thereafter, samples were obtained fr

A case of severe mandibular hypomobility due to fibrosis of the left temporalis tendon, combined with ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint, is presented. This case emphasizes the importance of reconstructing the historical timeline to establish a correct diagnosis, ultimately leading to appropriate treatment. The use of minimally invasive surgical techniques and the importance of postoperative rehabilitation are emphasized.
