Eight cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis are recorded among soldiers of the Brazilian Forest Infantry stationed in Belém, State of Pará, north of Brazil. The infections, all acquired during manoeuvres in nearby degraded primary forest, are attributed to a new member of the subgenus Viannia, Leishmania (V.) lindenbergi n. sp. BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies transmit African trypanosomiasis leading to half a million cases annually. Trypanosomiasis in animals (nagana) remains a massive brake on African agricultural development. While trypanosome biology is widely studied, knowledge of tsetse flies is very limited, particularly at the molecular level. Mansonella ozzardi infections are common in the riverside communities along the Solimões, Negro and Purus Rivers in the state of Amazonas (AM).
