INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite is known to be associated with internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study examined the relationships between internal derangement and dentofacial morphology in women with anterior open bite.
METHODS: Fifty-one women with anterior open bite were enrolled in this study. The sample was divided into 3 groups based on magnetic resonance imaging of bilateral TMJs: normal disk position, disk displacement with reduction, and disk displacement without reduction. One-way analysis of variance was used to compare the 3 groups with respect to the

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to improve safety and visibility in the surgical approach to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In spite of the development of a myriad of surgical approaches to the TMJ, the facial nerve remains at risk for damage. For this reason the authors present an additional, safe, surgical approach to avoid injuries of the facial nerve during TMJ surgery, termed "the deep subfascial approach."
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two resident surgeons, under supervision of the Department Chief, made 29 surgical exposures of the condyle, safely using the deep subfascial appro

A steep articular eminence is reported to be a predisposing factor for the development of disc displacement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in internal derangements and, additionally, to investigate whether a relationship exists between the steepness of the articular eminence and disc displacement, with (DDR) and without reduction (DDWR). The material consisted of the sagittal TMJ magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of 39 joints (26 DDR and 13 DDWR). Sagittal and coronal TMJ MRIs were obtained at maximum inter-cuspation and in the m

PURPOSE: The use of small titanium plates for the management of mandibular fractures continues to be a source of controversy because of their load-sharing properties. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the use of small plates for mandibular fractures is as efficacious as large plates in a large level I trauma center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive subjects presenting with mandibular fractures were randomly allocated to the use of either small plates (group 1) or large plates (group 2). The primary predictor variable was the plate size. The primary outcome variable w

The purpose of this study was to investigate the underlying mechanism in favorable prognosis following pediatric condylar fractures managed by closed procedures. Seventy-five 1-month-old male Wistar rats were used in this experiment. Unilateral medially rotated condyle fracture in growing rats was adopted as the condyle fracture model to investigate the mechanism in favorable healing of pediatric condylar fractures. The entire fracture healing process was investigated. The rotated subcondylar fractures in young rats healed by means of callus formation, with simultaneous and prompt repositionin

Reconstructive surgery for complex mandible defect with condyle is challenging for surgeons. Computer-aided planning and navigation is a useful adjunct for surgeons, which can improve visualization and orientation, insertion, mirroring, creation of planning models, and transformation of a surgical plan accurately. Here, we present a case of complex mandible defect reconstruction with computer-aided navigation and orthognathic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial morphological analysis is essential for orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and outcome evaluation. However, previous two-dimensional or landmark-based studies can hardly comprehensively analyze three-dimensional morphology. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze morphological variations and differences of the mandible and midfacial skeleton across different sagittal skeletal patterns and sexes using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics, while also providing novel perspectives and methodologies for morphological analysis in orthodontics.
METHODS: The midf

The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is an anatomically complex region with multiple neural and vascular structures entering and exiting through foramina in the skull base. The main obstacles to approaching the ITF are the zygomatic arch, the parotid gland, the facial nerve, and the ascending ramus AND condylar head of the mandible. Different surgical approaches to the ITF exist and the best approach should provide optimal visibility, minimal impairment of temporomandibular joint function, and preservation of motor and sensory nerve integrity. This report describes a modified Obwegeser retromaxillary

Patients with temporomandibular muscle and joint disorder (TMJD) increasingly seek and receive treatment for their pain with botulinum toxin (BoNTA; botulinum toxin A). Used intramuscularly in therapeutic doses, it produces localised paresis. Such paresis creates risk of reduced bone mineral density, or 'disuse osteopenia'. Animal studies have frequently used BoNTA as a model of paralysis to induce bone changes within short periods. Osteopenic effects can be enduring in animals but have yet to be studied in humans. This is the first study in humans to examine bone-related consequences of BoNTA
