Cross-modal conflict control deficits in male patients with substance use disorder are primarily associated with the response level.

RATIONALE: Cross-modal conflict control (CMCC) refers to the ability to prioritize information from one sensory modality while suppressing interference from another when presented with incongruent stimuli. Patients with substance use disorder (SUD) often exhibit CMCC deficits, but it has not been clarified whether this deficit occurs at the perception or response level. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether CMCC deficits in patients with SUD originate at perception or response levels and examined the modulatory role of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) using transcranial d

The Effect of Speech Masking on the Human Subcortical Response to Continuous Speech.

Auditory masking-the interference of the encoding and processing of an acoustic stimulus imposed by one or more competing stimuli-is nearly omnipresent in daily life and presents a critical barrier to many listeners, including people with hearing loss, users of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and people with auditory processing disorders. The perceptual aspects of masking have been actively studied for several decades, and particular emphasis has been placed on masking of speech by other speech sounds. The neural effects of such masking, especially at the subcortical level, have been much

Directional effects between rapid auditory processing and phonological awareness in children.

BACKGROUND: Deficient rapid auditory processing (RAP) has been associated with early language impairment and dyslexia. Using an auditory masking paradigm, children with language disabilities perform selectively worse than controls at detecting a tone in a backward masking (BM) condition (tone followed by white noise) compared to a forward masking (FM) condition (tone preceded by white noise). Tallal's (1980) auditory processing hypothesis posits that abnormal RAP leads to reduced (or impaired) phonological awareness (PA), resulting in reading and language difficulties. Alternative theories sug

Frequency tagging to track the neural processing of contrast in fast, continuous sound sequences.

The human auditory system presents a remarkable ability to detect rapid changes in fast, continuous acoustic sequences, as best illustrated in speech and music. However, the neural processing of rapid auditory contrast remains largely unclear, probably due to the lack of methods to objectively dissociate the response components specifically related to the contrast from the other components in response to the sequence of fast continuous sounds. To overcome this issue, we tested a novel use of the frequency-tagging approach allowing contrast-specific neural responses to be tracked based on their

Big Five Personality Traits and Life Satisfaction as Predictors of Parental Burnout in Parents of Children With Central Auditory Processing Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) face stressors related to their children's communication and learning difficulties. Currently, no research has explored how personality traits influence burnout among parents of children with CAPD. AIMS: This study investigated the relationships between parental burnout, the Big Five personality traits, and life satisfaction among parents of children with CAPD. METHODS: There were 248 parents (197 mothers, 51 fathers) of children with CAPD (Mage = 11 years) who participated. We analyzed three subgroups of parent

Better education required for professionals in healthcare regarding auditory processing disorder.

BACKGROUND: Global research has revealed inadequate levels of Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) awareness and knowledge among related professionals leading to neglect of this specific type of hearing impairment that is estimated to present in 50% of children with learning disabilities (dyslexia included) and more than 70% of adults with presbycusis or mild cognitive impairment. PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to record APD awareness and knowledge among professionals working in both Healthcare and Education sectors. METHODS: A 36-question questionnaire was developed and addressed t

Synesthetic hallucinations induced by psychedelic drugs in a congenitally blind man.

This case report offers rare insights into crossmodal responses to psychedelic drug use in a congenitally blind (CB) individual as a form of synthetic synesthesia. BP's personal experience provides us with a unique report on the psychological and sensory alterations induced by hallucinogenic drugs, including an account of the absence of visual hallucinations, and a compelling look at the relationship between LSD induced synesthesia and crossmodal correspondences. The hallucinatory experiences reported by BP are of particular interest in light of the observation that rates of psychosis within t

Investigating speech perception in children with dyslexia: is there evidence of a consistent deficit in individuals?

PURPOSE: The claim that speech perception abilities are impaired in dyslexia was investigated in a group of 62 children with dyslexia and 51 average readers matched in age. METHOD: To test whether there was robust evidence of speech perception deficits in children with dyslexia, speech perception in noise and quiet was measured using 8 different tasks involving the identification and discrimination of a complex and highly natural synthetic "bee"-"pea" contrast (copy synthesized from natural models) and the perception of naturally produced words. RESULTS: Children with dyslexia, on average, p

Reduced sensitivity to slow-rate dynamic auditory information in children with dyslexia.

The etiology of developmental dyslexia remains widely debated. An appealing theory postulates that the reading and spelling problems in individuals with dyslexia originate from reduced sensitivity to slow-rate dynamic auditory cues. This low-level auditory deficit is thought to provoke a cascade of effects, including inaccurate speech perception and eventually unspecified phoneme representations. The present study investigated sensitivity to frequency modulation and amplitude rise time, speech-in-noise perception and phonological awareness in 11-year-old children with dyslexia and a matched no

Psychometric profile of children with auditory processing disorder and children with dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to address the controversy that exists over the extent to which auditory processing disorder (APD) is a separate diagnostic category with a distinctive psychometric profile, rather than a reflection of a more general learning disability. METHODS: Children with an APD diagnosis (N=25) were compared with children with dyslexia (N=19) on a battery of standardised auditory processing, language, literacy and non-verbal intelligence quotient measures as well as parental report measures of communicative skill and listening behaviour. A follow-up of a subset of children include

Phonemic discrimination in callosal agenesis.

Children with callosal agenesis have congenital absence of the corpus callosum. Previous analyses of these subjects have shown that they have significant difficulty on rhyming tasks and tasks of explicit sound organisation. This study investigated whether such difficulties were also manifested on simpler tasks requiring the discrimination and repetition of similar sounding linguistic material. None of the acallosal children tested performed at a normal level across tasks. This suggests a possible impairment in the initial registration or analysis of auditory material and possible bases for thi

Masking level difference before and after surgery in unilateral otosclerosis.

The object of this paper was to evaluate the binaural hearing in 20 patients suffering from unilateral otosclerosis. Binaural performance was assessed at a test frequency of 500 Hz using masking level difference (MLD) before and after surgery. The postsurgical results showed abnormal MLDs in patients in whom stapedotomy had successfully corrected the threshold asymmetry. Three possible hypotheses regarding this phenomenon were investigated: (1) cochlear damage, (2) auditory deprivation and (3) a mechanical middle ear anomaly due to the surgical prosthesis or healing processes. The analyses sug

Individual differences in neurobehavioral measures of laterality and interhemispheric function as measured by dichotic listening.

This article presents analysis of dichotic listening performance in 57 healthy men and women aged 20 to 72 years. The data are presented as a means to cover 2 theoretical issues relevant to the biobehavioral study of laterality and interhemispheric relations. First, the sensitivity of dichotic listening performance to factors such as sex, age, and their interactions was examined. Dichotic listening asymmetry scores were found to vary as a function of sex, age, handedness, and family history of developmental language disorders. The effects of sex and age were then explored in relation to a comp

Childhood Listening and Associated Cognitive Difficulties Persist Into Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Listening difficulty (LiD) refers to the challenges individuals face when trying to hear and comprehend speech and other sounds. LiD can arise from various sources, such as hearing sensitivity, language comprehension, cognitive function, or auditory processing. Although some children with LiD have hearing loss, many have clinically normal audiometric thresholds. To determine the impact of hearing and cognitive factors on LiD in children with a clinically normal audiogram, we conducted a longitudinal study. The Evaluation of Children's Listening & Processing Skills (ECLiPS), a valida

Mismatch negativity in tobacco-naïve cannabis users and its alteration with acute nicotine administration.

Chronic cannabis use may interact with factors, such as age of onset of cannabis use, family history, and genetic factors, to elicit schizophrenia (SZ)-like symptoms, including sensory and cognitive deficits. However, evidence of a relationship between cannabis use and cognitive impairment is confounded by concomitant use of tobacco. The objective of this study was to compare tobacco-naïve cannabis users with individuals without a history of tobacco/cannabis use on the auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related potential (ERP), a neural measure of auditory deviance detection which is dim

The connection between rhythmicity and brain function.

Although rhythm and music are not entirely synonymous terms, rhythm constitutes one of the most essential structural and organizational elements of music. When considering the effect of music on human adaptation, the profound effect of rhythm on the motor system strongly suggests that the time structure of music is the essential element relating music specifically to motor behavior. Why the motor system appears so sensitive to auditory priming and timing stimulation can only be partially answered so far. The high-performance function of the auditory system regarding processing of time informat

Mismatch response is absent in 2-month-old infants at risk for dyslexia.

This study examined auditory processing in 2-month-old infants at genetic risk for dyslexia and in controls. Manipulated natural speech stimuli (/bAk/ and /dAk/), at either side of the phoneme boundary, were presented to these infants and their automatic cortical deviance responses were recorded. Control infants showed two distinct mismatch responses, thus extending similar findings reported with kindergartners in terms of topographical distribution and cortical sources. The absence of such mismatch responses in the infants at risk supports the hypothesis of basic auditory (temporal) processin

Speech processing in children with functional articulation disorders.

This study explored auditory speech processing and comprehension abilities in 5-8-year-old monolingual Hungarian children with functional articulation disorders (FADs) and their typically developing peers. Our main hypothesis was that children with FAD would show co-existing auditory speech processing disorders, with different levels of these skills depending on the nature of the receptive processes. The tasks included (i) sentence and non-word repetitions, (ii) non-word discrimination and (iii) sentence and story comprehension. Results suggest that the auditory speech processing of children w

[Dissociations between music and language functions after cerebral resection: A new case of amusia without aphasia].

We present the neuropsychological study of a patient, I.R., who sustained bilateral damage to the temporal lobes and to the right frontal lobe as a result of successive brain surgeries that occurred ten years earlier. The patient is 40 years old and right-handed; she had no special training in music or in language, representing, therefore, the large majority of listeners. Her performance is compared to that of four neurologically intact subjects who are closely matched in terms of education, sex and age. In the present study, we report I.R.'s performance on various tests aiming at assessing he
