Intraganglionic laminar endings (IGLEs) have been supposed to be the mechanoreceptors in the gut by electrophysiological recording techniques. But the specialized morphology of IGLEs could not be displayed closely associated with this function and the mechanism that IGLEs act as the mechanotransduction sites in the gut is not yet well understood. In the present study, we used styryl dye FM1-43 combined with stretch stimulation in the guinea pig esophagus to test whether IGLEs acted as the mechano-sensitive receptors of the vagal afferent nerves. At the same time, the special structure of IGLEs

The chemical codings of neurons that project from the small intestine, caecum, proximal colon, distal colon and rectum to the coeliac ganglion of the guinea pig were investigated. The coeliac ganglion was injected with the retrogradely transported dye Fast Blue, and each of the regions was examined 6 days later in wholemounts that had been prepared for immunohistochemical localisation of pairs of antigens. In both the small and large intestines, all intestinofugal neurons were immunoreactive (IR) for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT). In each region of the large intestine, the largest populatio

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the changes in the lacrimal functional unit in the following two models of neurogenic dry eye syndrome: sensory denervation of the cornea versus autonomic denervation of the lacrimal gland.
METHODS: The neural network supports the lacrimal functional unit. It can be divided into afferent (sensory) and efferent (autonomic) pathways and is affected by severe diseases that compromise the lacrimal functional unit. Male Wistar, 8-week-old rats were divided into the following three groups: 1) control naïve (n=16 animals); 2) autonomic denervation: where rats wer

The autonomic nervous system regulates cardiac function by balancing the actions of sympathetic and parasympathetic inputs to the heart. Intrinsic cardiac neurocircuits integrate these autonomic signals to fine-tune cardiac control, and sensory feedback loops regulate autonomic transmission in the face of external stimuli. These interconnected neural systems allow the heart to adapt to constantly changing circumstances that range from simple fluctuations in body position to running a marathon. The cardiac reflexes that serve to maintain homeostasis in health are disrupted in many disease state

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains difficult to treat, with 30-50% of patients retaining their diagnosis after first-line trauma-focused psychotherapies. Body-based therapies (BBTs) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) have each shown preliminary benefit for PTSD but have not yet been studied in combination. To our knowledge, this is the first proposal to integrate these modalities as a combined therapeutic approach. PTSD involves disrupted coordination across multiple levels of neural organization, from cortical regulatory networks to limbic threat circuits and autonomic syst

What is the topic of this review? This review briefly considers what modulates sympathetic nerve activity and how it may change as we age or in pathological conditions. It then focuses on transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, a method of neuromodulation in autonomic cardiovascular control. What advances does it highlight? The review considers the pathways involved in eliciting the changes in autonomic balance seen with transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation in relationship to other neuromodulatory techniques. The autonomic nervous system, consisting of the sympathetic and parasympathetic bra

Fifty men with erectile dysfunction (ED) were urologically investigated for autonomic deficit by evaluation of the sympathetic skin response at the penis. They were additionally subjected to thorough urological, vascular, psychiatric and neurological examinations, and well-established neurophysiological tests of the somatosensory, sympathetic, and parasympathetic function. Patients with clinical evidence of neurological deficit showed abnormal results (68%) in at least one test of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic skin response at the penis was absent in 11 cases (37%) with clinica

Two years after operative correction of a middle third fracture of the face, a patient suffered unilateral tearing and homolateral rhinorrhea as soon as he started sweating. This is explained by abnormal regeneration of autonomic nerve fibres. The possible anatomic pathways are discussed and compared with similar syndromes in the literature.

Neurophysiological evaluations have been widely applied in the study of Rett syndrome (RS) to provide information concerning the developmental aspects of RS; the character and extent of involvement of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous system pathways; and evaluation of the clinical symptomatology of RS. The electroencephalogram (EEG) is invariably abnormal and shows characteristic, though not diagnostic, changes: loss of expected developmental features; the appearance of focal, multifocal, and generalized epileptiform abnormalities; and the occurrence of rhythmic slow (theta) acti

PURPOSE: The neural pathways in which the brain regulates the cardiovascular system is via sympathetic and parasympathetic control of the heart and sympathetic control of the systemic vasculature. Various cortical and sub-cortical sites are involved, but how these critical brain regions for cardiovascular control are altered in healthy aging and other risk conditions that may contribute to cardiovascular disease is uncertain.
METHODS: Here we review the functional and structural brain changes in healthy aging, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation - noting their potential influence on the aut

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, affects a significant proportion of COVID-19 survivors and is associated with persistent fatigue, dysautonomia, and cardiovascular complications. The cellular mechanisms underlying these chronic symptoms remain incompletely understood.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate immune and endothelial cell dysfunction, with a focus on cell stress and death pathways, in individuals with long COVID compared with matched infection-recovered controls.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study

Cancer is increasingly recognized as a systemic disease whose biology is shaped by reciprocal interactions with its microenvironment, including the central and peripheral nervous systems. Recent evidence demonstrates that neural inputs can directly promote tumour growth through synaptic, paracrine, and neuroendocrine mechanisms, and that these inputs intersect with canonical drug-resistance pathways, creating new opportunities and challenges for precision oncology. Primary brain tumours such as gliomas form bona fide functional synapses with neurons, hijacking both excitatory (AMPA/NMDA) and i

OBJECTIVE: To review clinical and pre-clinical evidence supporting the role of visual pathways, from the eye to the cortex, in the development of photophobia in headache disorders.
BACKGROUND: Photophobia is a poorly understood light-induced phenomenon that emerges in a variety of neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Over the years, multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain its causes; however, scarce research and lack of systematic assessment of photophobia in patients has made the search for answers quite challenging. In the field of headaches, significant progress has been

Glucose produced by the liver is a major energy source for the brain. Considering its critical dependence on glucose, it seems only natural that the brain is capable of monitoring and controlling glucose homeostasis. In addition to neuroendocrine pathways, the brain uses the autonomic nervous system to communicate with peripheral organs. Within the brain, the hypothalamus is the key region to integrate signals on energy status, including signals from lipid, glucose, and hormone sensing cells, with afferent neural signals from the internal and external milieu. In turn, the hypothalamus regulate

Onset of flowering is controlled by environmental signals such as light and temperature. Molecular-genetic studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have focused on daily light duration, or photoperiod, and transient exposure to winter-like temperatures, or vernalization. Yet ambient growth temperature, which is strongly affected by current changes in global climate, has been largely ignored. Here, we show that genes of the autonomous pathway, previously thought only to act independently of the environment as regulators of the floral repressor FLC (ref. 1), are centrally involved in mediating the effect

Brain stem potentials from three groups of patients, namely those with pure progressive autonomic failure, Parkinson's disease and multisystem atrophy with progressive autonomic failure (Shy-Drager syndrome) were compared with each other and a group of normal subjects. In virtually all the patients with multisystem atrophy with progressive autonomic failure the brain stem potentials were abnormal in contrast to normal findings with Parkinson's disease. The closely associated group of patients with progressive autonomic failure alone also revealed no abnormalities of the BAEP. This separation o

The current immunohistochemical study used the antibody against neuropeptide Y (NPY) to observe the morphology of the autonomic ganglia in the mouse pancreas. The results indicated that intrapancreatic ganglion cells stained positively for NPY. Two types of ganglia were observed and they included the endocrine-contact ganglia that made contact with the endocrine pancreas and the interstitial ganglia, which were located in the interstitial space. The interstitial ganglia showed intense NPY-immunostaining than the endocrine-contact ganglia and were also closely associated with the NPY-immunoposi

OBJECTIVE: Depression, substance use disorders, and other neuropsychiatric comorbidities are common in people with HIV (PWH), but the underlying mechanisms are not sufficiently understood. HIV-induced damage to the gastrointestinal tract potentiates residual immune dysregulation in PWH receiving effective antiretroviral therapy. However, few studies among PWH have examined the relevance of microbiome-gut-brain axis: bidirectional crosstalk between the gastrointestinal tract, immune system, and central nervous system.
METHODS: A narrative review was conducted to integrate findings from 159 art

Although it is well known that autonomic dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with hypertension, its relationship to hypotension and orthostatic dysregulation is still unclear. We examined the response of blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular autonomic function to head-up tilt (HUT) test in patients with OSAS. In this study, 14 patients(mean age: 65+/-2 years old, male/female: 11/3) with diagnosed OSAS by overnight polysomnography and 84 healthy subjects(mean age: 62+/-1 years old, male/female: 46/38) underwent HUT test(from 5 to 10 min at 45 degrees).
