Experimental diabetes in the rat: alterations in the vesical function.

Vesical function has been studied in vivo in alloxan-diabetic rats. Rhythmic contractions evoked as a micturition reflex by a controlled distension of the bladder were recorded in urethane-anesthetized animals. These rhythmic contractions are essentially induced by the parasympathetic and inhibited by the sympathetic outflow. The study has been performed on male Sprague-Dawley rats. They were treated at the age of two months with vehicle (control group) or alloxan (100 mg/kg s.c.). Such treatment caused hyperglycemia (greater than 250 mg/dl) and glycosuria in most of the animals. In control an

Comprehensive Multimodal Diagnostics and Rehabilitation in Persistent Post-Concussion Syndrome Following Motor Vehicle Collision.

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are among the most common mechanisms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and a meaningful proportion of affected individuals develop persistent post-concussion syndrome (PPCS) characterized by prolonged multidomain dysfunction. Conventional neuroimaging frequently fails to capture the underlying pathophysiology, leaving clinicians without objective diagnostic evidence. We describe a 57-year-old woman who sustained mTBI in a rear-end MVC in March 2023. Head computed tomography (CT) performed at the emergency department and a subsequent brain magnetic resonance

Protocol for a pseudo-randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of eco-driving assistance systems on bus drivers' stress responses.

BACKGROUND: Technological innovations in the public transport sector are increasingly leveraged to support the goals of environmental sustainability and public health. Eco-driving assistance (EDA) systems represent one such intervention, aimed at reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and operating costs while improving passenger comfort. However, the potential unintended impacts of EDA technologies on driver health and well-being remain understudied. The EDA Trial, part of the EU-funded INTERCAMBIO project, seeks to evaluate whether the use of EDA systems may introduce new psychosocial stresso

Robust Object Detection in Adverse Weather Conditions: ECL-YOLOv11 for Automotive Vision Systems.

The rapid development of intelligent transportation systems and autonomous driving technologies has made visual perception a key component in ensuring safety and improving efficiency in complex traffic environments. As a core task in visual perception, object detection directly affects the reliability of downstream modules such as path planning and decision control. However, adverse weather conditions (e.g., fog, rain, and snow) significantly degrade image quality-causing texture blurring, reduced contrast, and increased noise-which in turn weakens the robustness of traditional detection model

Neuronal activity and transcription of proinflammatory cytokines, IkappaBalpha, and iNOS in the mouse brain during acute endotoxemia and chronic infection with Trypanosoma brucei brucei.

Trypanosoma brucei brucei (Tbb) infection is a model of chronic immune response associated with severe neurological disorders believed to lead to coma and death. We hypothesized that exaggerated production of proinflammatory molecules within the cental nervous system (CNS) may be involved in the etiology of the disease, i.e., African Tripanosomiasis. The purpose of the present study was therefore to verify the effects of the parasite Tbb on the genetic expression of the immediate-early gene c-fos (index of cellular activity), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), inhib

Goodness behind a wheel: moral judgment in realistic traffic simulations featuring Agents, Deeds, and Consequences.

Investigating how different stakeholders evaluate traffic situations is essential for aligning autonomous vehicle (AV) decision-making with common-sense moral expectations. Yet, empirical studies on traffic moral judgment remain limited and almost exclusively focused on dramatic high-stakes situations. To address this gap, this paper presents two studies testing moral judgment in low-stakes ordinary traffic simulations. Drawing on the ADC model of moral judgment, both studies systematically manipulated key moral features: the character of the driver (Agent), adherence to traffic rules (Deed),

Distributed Cooperative Control Path Planning for UAV Formation Based on Ordered Trigger Communication.

To address issues such as control instability and imbalance caused by communication constraints, this article proposes a distributed cooperative control method for multi-uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) formations based on communication-ordered triggering. First, to address the limited interactions caused by obstacle occlusion and other factors, a nonoverlapping conflict-staggered communication triggering mechanism is introduced. By incorporating intermittent neighboring communication principles, UAVs maximize information sharing within a limited communication window, effectively resolving issues

Effects of Auditory Anticipatory Cues and Lead Time on Visually Induced Motion Sickness.

ObjectiveThis study aims to investigate the ability of auditory cues for predicting motion and lead times to mitigate visually induced motion sickness (VIMS).BackgroundThe vehicle information systems predominantly utilize visual displays, which can introduce conflicts between visual and vestibular motion cues, potentially resulting in VIMS. In these scenarios, auditory cues may provide a viable solution, especially when visual cues are diminished by fatigue or distractions.MethodsIn two distinct studies, a total of 180 participants were involved in investigating the impact of auditory cues on

Calcitriol ameliorated autonomic dysfunction and hypertension by down-regulating inflammation and oxidative stress in the paraventricular nucleus of SHR.

The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) plays crucial roles in central cardiovascular regulation. Increasing evidence in humans and rodents shows that vitamin D intake is important for achieving optimal cardiovascular function. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether calcitriol, an active form of vitamin D, improves autonomic and cardiovascular function in hypertensive rats and whether PVN oxidative stress and inflammation are involved in these beneficial effects. Male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive control Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were treated with e

Donepezil attenuated cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury through balancing mitochondrial dynamics, mitophagy, and autophagy.

Cardiac autonomic imbalance including sympathetic overactivity and diminished parasympathetic activity is associated with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in cases of cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Electrical stimulation to increase vagal activity has been shown to reduce infarct size and decrease fatal arrhythmias in cardiac I/R injury. However, the benefits of a parasympathomimetic drug on the heart during I/R are unclear. We hypothesized that administration of donepezil provides cardioprotection in cardiac I/R injury via reducing cellular apoptosis, oxidative stress, mitochondr

Effect of ischemic preconditioning and a Kv7 channel blocker on cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

Recently, we found cardioprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning (IPC), and from a blocker of KCNQ voltage-gated K+ channels (KV7), XE991 (10,10-bis(4-pyridinylmethyl)-9(10H)-anthracenone), in isolated rat hearts. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the cardiovascular effects of IPC and XE991 and whether they are cardioprotective in intact rats. In conscious rats, we measured the effect of the KV7 channel blocker XE991 on heart rate and blood pressure by use of telemetry. In anesthetized rats, cardiac ischemia was induced by occluding the left coronary artery, and the an

Hexarelin treatment preserves myocardial function and reduces cardiac fibrosis in a mouse model of acute myocardial infarction.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) have been shown to improve cardiac function in models of IHD. This study determined whether hexarelin (HEX), a synthetic GHS, preserves cardiac function and morphology in a mouse model of myocardial infarction (MI). MI was induced by ligation of the left descending coronary artery in C57BL/6J mice followed by vehicle (VEH; n = 10) or HEX (0.3 mg/kg/day; n = 11) administration for 21 days. MI-injured and sham mice (treated with VEH; n = 6 or HEX; n = 5) underwent magnetic res

Antidepressant-like activity and cardioprotective effects of fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor URB694 in socially stressed Wistar Kyoto rats.

In humans, depression is often triggered by prolonged exposure to psychosocial stressors and is often associated with cardiovascular comorbidity. Mounting evidence suggests a role for endocannabinoid signaling in the regulation of both emotional behavior and cardiovascular function. Here, we examined cardiac activity in a rodent model of social stress-induced depression and investigated whether pharmacological inhibition of the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which terminates signaling of the endocannabinoid anandamide, exerts antidepressant-like and cardioprotective effects. Guillain-Barré syndrome following thoracic spinal cord trauma.

PURPOSE: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immunologic attack of the peripheral nerves causing rapidly ascending weakness and areflexia. Occasionally, weakness is severe enough to leave patients paralyzed and without adequate respiratory function. In such patients, intensive care unit (ICU) admission is required. Infrequently, GBS occurs in patients already admitted to the ICU. When this occurs, it can be difficult to distinguish GBS from critical illness neuropathy (CIN). However, it is important to consider GBS in these cases, since treatment options are available, and early treatmen
