Combined cognitive-behavioral, psychopharmacological and nutritional therapy in bulimia nervosa.

Fifteen women with bulimia nervosa were treated with a 4-month course of combined cognitive-behavioral, nutritional and antidepressant therapy (5 with amineptine and 10 with fluvoxamine). Patients were monitored before and after 1, 2 and 4 months of therapy for body mass index (BMI), for eating disorder symptoms by the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and the Bulimic Investigation Test (BITE), and for depression and anxiety by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and for Anxiety (HRS-D and -A). BITE symptoms and gravity improved significantly and equally in the two groups during the 4 month

Efficacy of telephone-administered behavioral therapy for panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a structured exposure-based behavior therapy program delivered by telephone to agoraphobic individuals who were isolated from specialized treatment centres. Forty-two individuals with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia who were living in rural areas of Ontario were assigned to either an eight-session telephone behavior therapy program or wait-list control condition. There were significant treatment x time interaction effects on several outcome variables. Patients originally in the wait-list group then received the

Comparison of cognitive-behavioral and supportive-expressive therapy for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared the effectiveness of 4 months (18 sessions) of cognitive-behavioral and supportive-expressive therapy for bulimia. METHOD: Sixty patients obtained from clinical referrals to an eating disorders program who met modified DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa were randomly assigned to the two conditions. Treatments were delivered in an individual format, on an outpatient basis, by experienced therapists using treatment manuals. The primary outcome measures were self-induced vomiting, binge eating, and attitudes toward body weight and shape, which were assessed by

Experiential aspects of bulimia nervosa. Implications for cognitive behavioral therapy.

Fifty female bulimic patients were asked to complete a questionnaire describing their experience during a binge-vomit episode. Findings indicated that starvation was a common precipitant of bingeing, as were situations such as being alone and eating something, and dysphoric feelings such as anxiety and frustration. Significant others, particularly the mother and the boyfriend or husband, might also precipitate a binge. Although many feelings increased or decreased in a linear fashion as the episode progressed, others such as depression and relief waxed and waned at different points in the epis

Can cognitive behavioral therapy be value-free and politically neutral?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been portrayed as a scientifically grounded and value-neutral form of psychotherapy. This paper argues that such normative neutrality is impossible. Drawing on arguments from philosophy of science, ethics, semantics, and professional regulations, the paper demonstrates that psychotherapy inevitably involves normative commitments. Hempel's analysis of scientific explanation, the Humean is-ought distinction, the Duhem-Quine thesis, unavoidable evaluative features of language, value-guided therapeutic change, and professional ethical codes all demonstrate th

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF USING SUGGESTIVE METHODS IN COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY.

AIM: This study examines the integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with suggestive methods, reflecting the growing trend toward methodological convergence in psychotherapy. It focuses on the psychological mechanisms underlying suggestion and its adaptation to digital therapeutic contexts. METHODS: A systemic-analytical approach, qualitative comparative analysis, and content analysis of contemporary literature were applied to evaluate the effectiveness of combining cognitive and suggestive techniques. RESULTS: The study identifies key forms of suggestion within CBT, including dire

Pathways to liberation: Socio-political context and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Cognitive behavioral therapies are widely used to treat a range of psychiatric and psychological problems, but the underlying assumptions and theories are firmly embedded in positivist and postpositivist ways of knowing, which privilege Eurocentric cultural perspectives. In this paper, we critically examine these underpinnings and offer multi-level recommendations for enhancing CBT's application to marginalized populations, with an emphasis on liberation and decolonial frameworks.

Sudden Gains in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Sudden gains are associated with better acute and follow-up outcomes in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for mood and anxiety disorders. Using the group CBT for seasonal affective disorder (CBT-SAD) condition (n=88) from a parent randomized clinical trial, this study examines whether sudden gains can be detected in CBT-SAD and whether they relate to outcome at post-treatment and at follow-ups one and two winters later. Applying Kelly et al.'s (2005) criteria to week-to-week symptom changes [i.e., scores on the Structured Interview Guide for the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression-Seasonal A

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for a Patient Diagnosed with Emetophobia - case study.

The aim of this paper is to present the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of emetophobia. The fear of vomiting (emetophobia) is a specific phobia, the mild form affects over 3% of the population, predominantly women. The main symptoms are associ- ated with the fear of experiencing nausea and other gastrointestinal sensations. These sensations are interpreted as a signal of impending vomiting, leading to discomfort and avoidance of eating and social situations. The symptoms may resemble other somatic and psychological disorders and can co-occur with various mental hea

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Children With Headaches: Will an App Do the Trick?

Participants were enrolled into a pilot randomized-controlled 4-week trial comparing the efficacy and feasibility of app-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to a stretching program. Headache-related disability and quality of life were assessed using the Pediatric Migraine Disability Scale (PedMIDAS), Kidscree27, and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Multivariable regression analysis were performed to assess the group effects in the presence of adherence and other covariates. Twenty participants completed the study. Adherence was significantly higher in the stretching than in the CBT ap

Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Tinnitus: A Study With Veterans and Nonveterans.

PURPOSE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a gold standard yet underutilized treatment for tinnitus, and tinnitus is especially highly prevalent among veterans. The aims of this study were twofold: to determine (a) if CBT for tinnitus is underutilized because participants find it less acceptable than other behavioral treatments for tinnitus and (b) if veterans and nonveterans rate behavioral treatments for tinnitus differently. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted online with a sample of 277 adults in the United States who self-reported at least some level of bothersome tinnit

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia in School-Aged Children and Adolescents.

One of the most prevalent sleep disorders in children and adolescents is "insomnia," which can be briefly described as problems with initiating and/or maintaining sleep with associated daytime consequences. These are typical insomnia symptoms, and when experienced for long enough and when they interfere with an important area of the young person's life (eg, schooling), then a diagnosis of an insomnia disorder may be warranted. The authors strongly urge the scientific community to conduct further controlled trials, including dismantling trials that evaluate the relative effectiveness of individ

Cognitive behavioral therapy for hoarding disorder: An updated meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a new disorder in DSM-5. While cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is seen as the gold standard approach to treatment, the literature in this field is still emerging. METHODS: The aim of the present study is to synthesize the current treatment outcome literature on CBT for HD, as well as secondary depressive symptoms, using a meta-analytic approach. Due to a lack of controlled trials only within-group effect sizes were calculated. RESULTS: Sixteen studies were included in the meta-analysis (n = 505; mean age = 56 years; mean percentage female participants

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: 2021 Update.

In this update of a previous review, the authors discuss cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This efficacious modality avoids side effects common to psychotropic medication and reduces risk of relapse once treatment has ended. Psychotherapy involves identification and ranking of stimuli that provoke obsessions, exposure to these stimuli while preventing compulsions, and cognitive restructuring. The family of the OCD patient plays a significant role in treatment. This article includes expanded research on family-focus

Acceptability of Computerized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults: Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Mental ill-health presents a major public health problem. A potential part solution that is receiving increasing attention is computer-delivered psychological therapy, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic as health care systems moved to remote service delivery. However, computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (cCBT) requires active engagement by service users, and low adherence may minimize treatment effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to investigate the acceptability of cCBT to understand implementation issues and maximize potential benefits. OBJECTIVE: This study ai

Cognitive behavioral therapy for postpartum panic disorder: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Clinical anxiety is common during the perinatal period, and anxiety symptoms often persist after childbirth. Ten to 30 % of perinatal women are diagnosed with panic disorder (PD)-far more than the 1.5-3% rate among the general population. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been determined to be an effective treatment for PD, few studies have been conducted on CBT effectiveness in treating postpartum PD and, to the best of the knowledge of the present authors, no research has been conducted on postpartum PD among Japanese women. In this manuscript, we report on our admi
