Alcohol use before and during pregnancy in western Washington, 1989-2004: implications for the prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: We examined trends in rates of self-reported pregnancy alcohol use among women in western Washington. STUDY DESIGN: Between 1989 and 2004, we conducted 3 studies in western Washington State on problems that are associated with maternal prenatal alcohol or drug abuse (n = 12,526). To determine study eligibility, we screened hospitalized postpartum women for alcohol and drug use in the month before and during pregnancy. We examined trends in alcohol use rates and identified characteristics that were associated with any drinking and binge drinking (> or = 5 drinks on any occasion). R

The Relationship Between Anti-Transgender Experiences (A Proxy for Minority Stress) and Heavy Alcohol Use Among Transgender Adults.

PURPOSE: Although several studies have shown a relationship between anti-transgender experiences and binge drinking and/or hazardous drinking, very little research has examined how these experiences relate to heavy drinking. That is the focus of this study. METHODS: This paper uses data from the 2015 National Transgender Survey, and is based on a sample of 17,367 transgender adults residing in the United States. Analyses compare three groups: current "regular" drinkers (drank at least some alcohol during the previous month but no days consuming five or more drinks) (n = 10,496), binge drinker

Optimal Cutoff Values of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and its Short Version for Detecting Excessive Alcohol Use in Japanese College Students.

Alcohol use disorder is a serious health problem in college students. Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) is a 10-item screening tool to assess alcohol consumption, drinking behaviors, and alcohol-related problems. AUDIT-C is a short version of AUDIT, consisting of consumption items 1-3. However, the optimal cutoff values of AUDIT and AUDIT-C for detecting excessive drinking are not available for Japanese college students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of cutoff points of AUDIT and AUDIT-C for detecting moderate drinking, heavy drinking and binge drinking amo

More Restrictive State Alcohol Policies Are Associated With Lower Risk of Sexual Assault Victimization Among College Students.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol use plays a role in college sexual assaults. Given that more restrictive state alcohol policy environments have been associated with less binge drinking we tested whether these environments were associated with reduced risk of sexual assault victimization in college students. METHOD: Repeated cross-sectional National College Health Assessment surveys of 876,326 students (ages 18-24) from 2008-2019 were linked to time-varying, state-level Alcohol Policy Scale (APS) scores indexing the efficacy and implementation of 29 policies. Students reported five past-year sexual victimi

Perceptions of Overall Health Differences Among Veterans Across Marital Statuses.

We examined the relationship between substance use, marital status, and perceived overall health using national data from a sample of 1,506 retired active-duty veterans. We found that binge drinking and heavy alcohol use among widowed veterans have a negative effect on overall health compared to married veterans who did not use alcohol in the past month. We found that non-binge and binge drinking have a positive effect on perceptions of overall health among divorced or separated veterans compared to those who are married and did not use alcohol in the past month. We discuss these findings and

Health Behaviors and Outcomes Associated With Personal and Family History of Criminal Justice System Involvement, New York City, 2017.

Objectives. To quantify the association between personal and family history of criminal justice system (CJS) involvement (PHJI and FHJI, respectively), health outcomes, and health-related behaviors.Methods. We examined 2017 New York City Community Health Survey data (n = 10 005) with multivariable logistic regression. We defined PHJI as ever incarcerated or under probation or parole. FHJI was CJS involvement of spouse or partner, child, sibling, or parent.Results. We found that 8.9% reported only FHJI, 5.4% only PHJI, and 2.9% both FHJI and PHJI (mean age = 45.4 years). Compared with no CJS in

Abnormal neutrophil traps and impaired efferocytosis contribute to liver injury and sepsis severity after binge alcohol use.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are an important strategy utilized by neutrophils to immobilize and kill invading microorganisms. Herein, we studied NET formation and the process of neutrophil cell death (NETosis), as well as the clearance of NETs by macrophages (MΦ) (efferocytosis) in acute sepsis following binge drinking. METHODS: Healthy volunteers consumed 2 ml of vodka/kg body weight, before blood endotoxin and 16 s rDNA were measured. Peripheral neutrophils were isolated and exposed to alcohol followed by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) stimulation. Mice w

Selective dysregulation of serotonin dynamics in the anterior cingulate cortex and central amygdala following binge alcohol consumption.

Serotonin (5HT) is a critical modulator of brain function and behavior that is dysregulated in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) play distinct roles in AUD and undergo functional changes in 5HT signaling following binge drinking, but our understanding of real-time 5HT dynamics in these structures is lacking. We hypothesized that binge drinking would elicit brain-region specific dysfunction in 5HT dynamics during appetitive and aversive stimuli processing. Using fiber photometry with the GRAB5HT sensor, we identified distin

Inaccessible mental health care is a risk factor for risky drinking behaviors among cancer survivors: an All of Us survey-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: Access to mental health care services and the impact on substance use among cancer survivors has not been well-defined. Patients with cancer may be at particular risk of mental health challenges and excessive alcohol consumption. We sought to characterize the impact of mental health care access on drinking behaviors among cancer survivors. METHODS: Data on cancer survivors were obtained from the National Institutes of Health All of Us Research Program from the Basics, Overall Health, and the personal and family health history surveys. The association of access to mental health care a

Alcohol use in late adolescence and early adulthood: The role of generalized anxiety disorder and drinking to cope motives.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between anxiety and alcohol use is unclear, and moderating factors, such as drinking to cope (DTC) motives, may explain mixed findings. METHODS: Using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we examined associations between generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) at age 18 and frequent drinking, frequent bingeing, hazardous drinking, and harmful drinking at ages 18 (unadjusted n = 3462) and 21 (unadjusted n = 2076), in a sample of late adolescent drinkers. Analyses were adjusted for sociodemographic, parental, and adolescent confounders. We also e
