Marine Benthic Cyanobacteria as Potential Bioresources for Rare Earth Element Management: Insights from Lanthanum Bioaccumulation and Strain-Specific Physiological Responses.

Marine cyanobacteria represent a promising but underexplored bioresource for rare earth element (REE) management. This study investigated the effects of lanthanum (La, 10 mg L-1) on four cyanobacterial strains isolated from Black Sea periphyton: Desertifilum tharense AqMaPh-IBSS-CYA-1, Toxifilum mysidocida AqMaPh-IBSS-CYA-10, Salileptolyngbya sp. IBSS-CYA-8, and Cyanobium sp. AqMaPh-IBSS-CYA-15. La induced a delayed hormetic response in Cyanobium sp. Under suboptimal light and temperature conditions, La supplementation supported 100% survival of all strains over 35 days, whereas controls peris

Dietary energy level modulates dietary silver nanoparticle toxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio): Growth, oxidative stress, fatty acid composition, and bioaccumulation.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are extensively used in consumer products due to their antimicrobial properties, leading to their release into aquatic environments. There is growing evidence that the biological effects of AgNPs in aquatic organisms can be modulated by nutritional and metabolic factors. This study investigated how variations in dietary energy availability modulate the physiological and toxicological responses to AgNPs exposure in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Six dietary treatments were tested for 28 days, combining three feeding regimens-restricted (RC), normal (NC), and high-calorie

Multi-pollutant dynamics in an industrial benthic ecosystem: Linking source apportionment, bioaccumulation, and ecological risks of PAHs, phthalates, and alkylphenols.

Industrial benthic systems are major reservoirs of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) derived from industrial discharges, urban runoff, wastewater effluents, and maritime activities. This study quantified polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and alkylphenols (APs) in sediments and benthic crustaceans from Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan, and evaluated the factors controlling their distribution, bioaccumulation, and associated risks. Outside-harbor sediments exhibited ΣPAH, ΣPAE, and ΣAP concentrations ranging from 2.27 to 230, 25.4 to 340, and 1.40 to 72.8 ng g⁻¹ dw,

Non-destructive sampling of larval amphibians shows tail tissues reflect whole-body methylmercury concentrations and trophic-related differences in bioaccumulation.

Mercury (Hg), and specifically methylmercury (MeHg), is a contaminant of global concern to humans and wildlife, but there is still limited understanding of its effects on many taxa. Amphibians are closely associated with water, where Hg is converted to MeHg, and high concentrations of MeHg can reduce survival of amphibians in the wild. However, limited non-lethal proxies exist for estimating MeHg bioaccumulation in amphibian larvae, which could be used to reduce destructive sampling and allow sampling of imperiled species. We evaluated whether tail clips were indicative of whole-body MeHg conc

Investigating the diet source influence on freshwater fish mercury bioaccumulation and fatty acids-Experiences from Swedish lakes and Chinese reservoirs.

Dietary uptake is key for transferring potentially toxic contaminants, such as mercury (Hg) and essential dietary nutrients, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), to consumers at higher trophic levels of aquatic food webs. We evaluated the role of diet sources for Hg bioaccumulation and PUFA retention in fish across lake food webs in seven Swedish lakes and two Chinese reservoirs. Fish total Hg (THg) and methyl-Hg (MeHg) differed greatly between the two countries: the Chinese fish contained less than 300 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.) THg with less than 50% as MeHg, versus the Swedish fishes w

Dietary bioaccumulation potential of silver nanomaterials compared to silver nitrate in wistar rats using an ex vivo gut sac technique.

Chronic dietary bioaccumulation tests with rodents are required for new substances, including engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), in order to provide information on the potential hazards to human health. However, screening tools are needed to manage the diversity of ENMs and alternative methods are desirable with respect to animal welfare. Here, an ex vivo gut sac method was used to estimate the dietary bioaccumulation potential of silver nanomaterials. The entire gastrointestinal tract (except the caecum) was removed and filled with a gut saline containing 1 mg L-1 of Ag as either AgNO3, silver

Experimental study of inorganic and methylmercury bioaccumulation by four species of freshwater rooted macrophytes from water and sediment contamination sources.

An experimental study based on four species of rooted macrophytes (Elodea densa, Ludwigia natans, Lysimachia nummularia, Hygrophila onogaria) was carried out to quantify and compare their mercury bioaccumulation capacity from the water column and the sediment compartments as initial sources of contamination. The first stage consisted of analyzing plant growth (weight and total length) in relation to six different characteristics of the biotopes, resulting from the combination of three types of sediment (natural sediment, sediment+sand, clay) and two types of aquatic medium (synthetic river wat

Trophic drivers of lead and cadmium bioaccumulation in waterbird eggshells: a non-invasive assessment at Gandoman Wetland, a Ramsar site in Iran.

Anthropogenic expansion has intensified heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems, posing a severe threat to avian biodiversity. This study utilizes bird eggshells as non-invasive biomarkers to assess lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) contamination in the Gandoman Wetland, Iran. During the 2023 breeding season, eggshells were collected from three species with distinct ecological roles: the common tern (Sterna hirundo), the black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigricollis), and the Eurasian coot (Fulica atra). Metal concentrations were determined using an Agilent 240FS AA atomic absorption spectrometer (Agi

Assessment of trace element distribution, bioaccumulation, and health risks in silver pomfret from major fishing grounds of the Bay of Bengal.

Trace elements, both essential and toxic, are widespread in marine ecosystems and can pose health risks through bioaccumulation in seafood. This study assessed trace element concentrations in silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus) from three fishing zones in the Bay of Bengal-south patches, middle ground, and swatch of no ground-within Bangladesh's maritime area. Using EDXRF spectrometry, we analyzed elements including Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Hg, and Pb. Most elements showed significant spatial variation (p < 0.05), except Hg and Pb. Levels of Cr, Ni, As, Hg, and Pb were bel

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, and ecological and health risks of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish from aquaculture ponds.

Aquaculture organisms may accumulate metals to induce health risks. Compared with the focus on total contents, chemical-specific risk assessment makes reasonable but is rare. Herein, we elucidated occurrence of twelve metal compounds in shrimp and fish (edible muscle, one of major metal-containing and generally targeted organs), water, sediment, and feedstuff from two aquaculture ponds in Zhejiang Province (one of the major aquatic production and consumption areas). We detected Cd(II) (0.6 -71.4 μg kg-1 in 100 % prawn but 63 % fish), methylmercury (MeHg, 0.5 -7.1 μg kg-1 in 100 % fish but 61 %

Comparative analysis of the bioaccumulation of bisphenol A in the blood serum and follicular fluid of women living in two areas with different environmental impacts.

INTRODUCTION: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common contaminant widely used in many industrial sectors. Because of its wide use and dispersion, it can be accumulated in living human bodies through both oral assumption and nondietary routes. BPA exhibits hormone-like properties, falling under the class of endocrine disruptors; therefore, it can alter relevant physiological functions. In particular, in women, it can affect folliculogenesis and therefore reproduction, contributing not only to infertility, but also to endometriosis and premature puberty. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter study on 91 wo

Factors determining bioaccumulation of neurotoxicant Hg in the zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha): Influence of biometric parameters, sex and storage of shell.

One of benthic organisms exposed to contact with mercury in the southern Baltic is alien species of clam: Dreissena polymorpha. As this organism is increasingly dynamic in various regions of the world including the southern Baltic region, it is reasonable to ask whether it tolerates elevated concentrations of xenobiotics? Does it effectively eliminate Hg? The study determined the effects of biometric parameters and water temperature on the rate of accumulation and efficiency of eliminating Hg from body. Investigations focused on the shell which represents poorly-recognized role in the process

Are current regulatory log Kow cut-off values fit-for-purpose as a screening tool for bioaccumulation potential in aquatic organisms?

Persistent, Bioaccumulative and Toxic (PBT) and very Persistent and very Bioaccumulative (vPvB) are regulatory hazard categories that have been set to manage the possible risks to humans and the environment from these chemicals. In industrial chemicals regulations, their aquatic Bioaccumulation potential is usually assessed first with a screening based on the octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow). However, current log Kow cut-off values triggering classification, categorisation and/or further fish bioconcentration testing are not harmonised worldwide, and they have never been assessed for

Enhanced Bioaccumulation and Transfer of Monomethylmercury through Periphytic Biofilms in Benthic Food Webs of a River Affected by Run-of-River Dams.

Run-of-river (ROR) power plants impound limited terrestrial areas compared to traditional hydropower plants with large reservoirs and are assumed to have reduced impacts on mercury cycling. We conducted a study on periphyton and benthic communities from different habitats of the St. Maurice River (Québec, Canada) affected by two ROR power plants and their effect on the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of monomethylmercury (MMHg). Proportion of total mercury as MMHg reached maximum values about 2.9 times higher in flooded sites compared to unflooded sites. Impoundment by ROR would therefore

Distribution of metals in the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis during a transplant experiment: Metal rich granules as drivers of Pb bioaccumulation.

The queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis accumulates high concentrations of lead (Pb) in its tissues, what has led to the interruption of this fishery in some extraction areas in Galicia (NW Spain). This study follows the dynamics of bioaccumulation of Pb and other metals in this species, the tissue distribution and the subcellular partitioning in selected organs, in order to understand the mechanisms that provoke the high Pb levels reached in its tissues and to increase our knowledge about metal bioaccumulation dynamics in this species. Algal Density Controls the Spatial Variations in Hg Bioconcentration and Bioaccumulation at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web of Lake Taihu, China.

Algal density can significantly impact mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation and biomagnification in aquatic food webs, but the underlying mechanisms remain controversial especially in subtropical and tropical regions. We conducted a comprehensive field study on Hg bioconcentration in phytoplankton and bioaccumulation in size-fractionated zooplankton across 17 sampling sites in Lake Taihu, a large shallow lake in eastern China with large spatial differences in algal density. The higher algal density in the northern sites is highly associated with the lower THg bioconcentration factor (BCF) in phytoplan
