Karyotypic evolution in squamate reptiles: comparative gene mapping revealed highly conserved linkage homology between the butterfly lizard (Leiolepis reevesii rubritaeniata, Agamidae, Lacertilia) and the Japanese four-striped rat snake (Elaphe quadrivirgata, Colubridae, Serpentes).

The butterfly lizard (Leiolepis reevesii rubritaeniata) has the diploid chromosome number of 2n = 36, comprising two distinctive components, macrochromosomes and microchromosomes. To clarify the conserved linkage homology between lizard and snake chromosomes and to delineate the process of karyotypic evolution in Squamata, we constructed a cytogenetic map of L. reevesii rubritaeniata with 54 functional genes and compared it with that of the Japanese four-striped rat snake (E. quadrivirgata, 2n = 36). Six pairs of the lizard macrochromosomes were homologous to eight pairs of the snake macrochro

[Not Available].

Butterfly vertebra anomaly is a rare condition where the vertebral body fails to fuse during embryogenesis. In this case report, we present a 32-year-old male with progressive lower back pain and paralysis in both lower extremities. CT- and MR-scan showed an isolated L3 butterfly vertebra with a fusion of L2 and L3 discus through the defect and a discus prolapse compressing the spinal canal. The patient underwent successful decompressive surgery and experienced relief in symptoms post-operatively.

Caterpillar dermatitis.

Lepidopterism is the term used to describe the aggregate adverse medical effects resulting from contact with adult or larval forms of butterflies and moths. Histamine, histamine-releasing substances, kinin activators, and other as yet undefined proteins are responsible for cutaneous, cardiovascular, neurologic, and constitutional signs and symptoms of lepidopterism. Insect venom is likely injected into the skin through specialized caterpillar hairs when contact occurs with the insect (or vegetation laden with insect debris). Mild cases of lepidopterism will resolve spontaneously; systemic cort

A Nonsurgical Approach to Management of Lepidopterism due to Woolly Bear Caterpillar Ingestion.

Systemic symptoms resulting from exposure to members of the Lepidoptera order, such as moths, butterflies, and caterpillars, are known as lepidopterism. Most cases of lepidopterism are mild and result from dermal exposure to urticating hairs; ingestion is less common and generally more medically significant because the hairs may get embedded in the patient's mouth, hypopharynx, or esophagus, leading to dysphagia, drooling, edema, and possible airway obstruction. In previous cases of symptomatic caterpillar ingestion reported in the literature, extensive efforts, including direct laryngoscopy,

Selective formation and unusual reactivity of tetraarsabicyclo[1.1.0]butane complexes.

The selective formation of the dinuclear butterfly complexes [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2}2(μ,η(1:1)-E4)] (E = P (1 a), As (1 b)) and [{Cp*Cr(CO)3}2(μ,η(1:1)-E4)] (E = P (2 a), As (2 b)) as new representatives of this rare class of compounds was found by reaction of E4 with the corresponding dimeric carbonyl complexes. Complexes 1 b and 2 b are the first As4 butterfly compounds with a bridging coordination mode. Moreover, first studies regarding the reactivity of 1 b and 2 b are presented, revealing the formation of the unprecedented As8 cuneane complexes [{Cp'''Fe(CO)2}2{Cp'''Fe(CO)}2(μ4,η(1:1:2:2)-As8)] (

High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation With Subcutaneous Drainage in Children With Postintubation Tracheal Injury.

Introduction: Tracheal injury during intubation is an uncommon condition in pediatric patients with a high mortality rate. There is no definitive consensus on the management of pediatric postintubation tracheal injury; most studies report satisfactory conservative treatment. High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) with bedside subcutaneous drainage using a butterfly needle may be useful for conservative treatment in this group. Case Summary: A 1-year and 7-month-old girl experienced tracheal injury after emergency intubation. The patient developed massive subcutaneous emphysema (MSE), pn

Cutaneous lichenoid graft-versus-host disease mimicking lupus erythematosus.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is the main complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and the skin is the most commonly involved organ. The clinical presentation is varied and may resemble autoimmune diseases, such as scleroderma, lichen planus or lichen sclerosus. Chronic GVHD presenting with a butterfly malar rash mimicking lupus erythematosus is uncommon. We report a series of five patients with cutaneous lichenoid GVHD that presented with a butterfly malar rash. Two of our patients had positive antinuclear antibody titres. The evolution was poor with development of scleroderm

Interacting Effects of Eyespot Number and Ultraviolet Reflectivity on Predation Risk in Bicyclus anynana (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae).

Small marginal eyespots on lepidopteran wings are conspicuous elements that attract a predator's attention to deflect attacks away from the body, but the role of ultraviolet (UV) reflectivity at the center of these patterns and variation in eyespot number in altering the function of eyespots remains unclear. Here, we performed a field-based predation experiment with artificial prey items based on the appearance of squinting bush brown butterflies Bicyclus anynana (Butler, 1879). We tested how two visual properties of the wing pattern affect predation risk: i) the number of eyespots on the vent

Eye-spots in Lepidoptera attract attention in humans.

Many prey species exhibit defensive traits to decrease their chances of predation. Conspicuous eye-spots, concentric rings of contrasting colours, are one type of defensive trait that some species exhibit to deter predators. We examined the function of eye-spots in Lepidoptera to determine whether they are effective at deterring predators because they resemble eyes ('eye mimicry hypothesis') or are highly salient ('conspicuous signal hypothesis'). We recorded the gaze behaviour of men and women as they viewed natural images of butterflies and moths as well as images in which the eye-spots of t

Neurophysiological correlates of habituation during exposure in spider phobia.

Imaging studies using symptom-provocation paradigms in specific phobia have yielded contradictory results, possibly reflecting a failure to account for habituation processes. Given that a single session of exposure in vivo can result in significant improvement in specific phobia, we used prolonged exposure to phobic stimuli to identify CNS regions showing habituation. Eighteen subjects (12 with spider phobia, 6 healthy controls) underwent H(2)(15)O-positron emission tomography while being continuously presented with pictures of spiders or butterflies. Results showed main effects (spiders>butte

Artificial valves to replace the Ureterovesical Junctions: a novel approach to prevent urinary backflow.

Vesicoureteral reflux is a common complication following radical cystectomy, resulting from the removal of the ureterovesical junctions (UVJ). Current bladder reconstruction methods do not address this issue, leading to potential renal complications. In this study, we designed, fabricated, and tested two passive ureteral valve designs - the Butterfly and Cap valves - to ensure unidirectional urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder when inserted into the ureters of an artificial bladder (AB). Finite Element Method simulations guided the optimization of valves. The prototypes were 3D-printed

Differences in winter cold hardiness reflect the geographic range disjunction of Neophasia menapia and Neophasia terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Predicting how rapid climate change will affect terrestrial biota depends on a thorough understanding of an organism's biology and evolutionary history. Organisms at their range boundaries are particularly sensitive to climate change. As predominantly terrestrial poikilotherms, insects are often geographically limited by extremes in ambient temperatures. We compared the cold hardiness strategies of two geographically widespread butterflies, the pine white, Neophasia menapia, and the Mexican pine white, N. terlooii (Lepidoptera: Pieridae), at the near-contact zone of their range boundaries. Ontogenetic shifts in the metabolomic profiles of Battus polydamas (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae: Troidini) Feeding on Aristolochia gigantea.

Insect development involves profound physiological reorganization that can alter the assimilation and allocation of metabolites across life stages. In herbivorous insects, these processes are tightly linked to diet-derived chemical exposure, yet how metabolic organization shifts throughout ontogeny remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated ontogenetic metabolomic variation in Battus polydamas feeding on Aristolochia gigantea, a system characterized by a specialized ecological interaction between insect and host plant. We examined how chemical profiles vary across larval, pupal, and adul

Flower visitors of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in West Bengal and assessing yield enhancement by stingless bee (Tetragonula pagdeni Schwarz) pollination.

Amid growing concerns over the decline of pollinator populations, understanding the diversity of pollinators is essential for optimising crop yields. The wild pollinators of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens) in West Bengal, India, have not yet been fully documented, and the potential of stingless bees as commercial pollinators remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to identify the floral visitors of chili pepper and to assess the pollination efficiency of stingless bees (Tetragonula pagdeni). Bees (including honeybees, solitary bees, and stingless bees), butterflies, and wasps were

Quantifying the success of prey crypsis, aposematism, and evasiveness in avoiding predator attack.

Antipredator defenses typically act at distinct stages of the predation sequence-encounter, identification, approach, and subjugation. However, their effectiveness has rarely been quantified and compared simultaneously in wild predator-prey systems. We conducted a study in Peru, where we installed aviaries at two localities and recorded the responses of wild avian predators to three types of antipredator defenses-crypsis, aposematism, and evasiveness-expressed by three butterfly prey types. The study included both immature and adult birds from forest and urban environments, representing the pr
