The in vitro activity of cefixime and 9 other orally used antimicrobial agents against 545 selected clinical respiratory tract pathogens was tested using the plate-dilution method. Of the strains tested, 144 were Haemophilus influenzae strains, 151 group A streptococci, 105 pneumococci and 145 Moraxella catarrhalis isolates. Ciprofloxacin was the most active drug, with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of < 0.06 mg/l for more than 87% of the isolates. With cefixime, a MIC of 0.06 mg/l inhibited 55% of the strains tested and a MIC of 1.0 mg/l inhibited all except one of the 545 strains.

Patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency have steatorrhoea as well as vitamin B12 malassimilation. To investigate whether this is caused by the pancreatic insufficiency per se or whether intestinal bacterial overgrowth contributes to the condition, 10 patients with pancreatic steatorrhoea were studied. Laboratory and clinical investigations were performed on cefadroxil, and the results were obtained as follows. (1) Sensitivity distribution of cefadroxil. In S. aureus, two peaks were observed with inoculum size of 10(8)/ml: 1.56-3.13 microgram/ml and 12.5-25 microgram/ml, while with inoculum size of 10(8)/ml, the distribution was in the range of smaller than or equal to 0.1-25 microgram/ml, and the sensitivity peak was 0.78-1.56 microgram/ml. Cefadroxil monohydrate, an oral cephalosporin with a long half-life, was compared to erythromycin estolate for efficacy in treating upper respiratory tract infections in children. The study was carried out on forty patients, twenty receiving cefadroxil and twenty receiving erythromycin.
