Unraveling symptom interplay: a network analysis of procrastination in gifted students.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the intricate web of symptoms experienced by academically gifted high school students, focusing on procrastination, rumination, perfectionism, and cognitive flexibility. The well-being of these gifted adolescents remains a pivotal concern, and understanding the dynamics of these symptoms is vital. METHODS: A diverse sample of 207 academically gifted high school students from Mashhad, Iran, participated in this study. Using convenience sampling, participants from grades 10, 11, and 12 were included, with detailed assessments conducted through questionnaires meas

First-grade multilingual students' executive function profiles and links to English reading achievement and difficulties: a person-centered latent profile analysis.

Although the important role of children's executive function (EF) in their reading development has been well-established, less is known about the extent to which multilingual children's EF components vary and whether the variability in different EF abilities explains multilingual children's English reading achievement. The present study explored the US first-grade multilingual children's (N = 3,819) profiles of EF abilities and how the profile membership was associated with their English reading achievement, using a nationally representative sample of multilingual children from the Early Child

A Randomized Trial Directly Comparing Ventral Capsule and Anteromedial Subthalamic Nucleus Stimulation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Clinical and Imaging Evidence for Dissociable Effects.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging treatment for severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We compared the efficacy of ventral capsule/ventral striatal (VC/VS) and anteromedial subthalamic nucleus (amSTN) DBS in the same patients and tested for mechanistic differences on mood and cognitive flexibility and associated neural circuitry. The possible synergistic benefit of DBS at both sites and cognitive behavioral therapy was explored. METHODS: Six patients with treatment-refractory OCD (5 men; Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale score >32) entered double-blind counterba

Obsessive-compulsive tendencies shift the balance between competitive neurocognitive functions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been theorized to reflect an imbalance between automatic and goal-directed processes. However, evidence for this imbalance has relied almost exclusively on reward- and feedback-based paradigms, leaving unsupervised learning mechanisms largely unexplored. We investigated this imbalance by examining the relationship between statistical learning (SL) -a feedback-free, implicit mechanism for detecting environmental regularities - and cognitive flexibility, the ability to adapt behavior to changing demands. Adopting a spectrum approach to obsessive-compulsive

Investigating executive functions in youth with OCD and hoarding symptoms.

Executive functions (EF) deficits are hypothesized to be a core contributor to hoarding symptoms. EF have been studied in adult hoarding populations, but studies in youth are lacking. The current study compared multiple EF subdomains between youth with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and youth with OCD and hoarding symptoms. Forty youth (8-18 years old) with a primary diagnosis of OCD were recruited. Participants were divided by hoarding severity on the Child Saving Inventory (CSI) into either the "hoarding group" (upper 33.3%) or the "low-hoarding group" (lower 66.7%). Groups were compare

Attentional control, rumination and recurrence of depression.

BACKGROUND: Depressive recurrence is highly prevalent and adds significantly to the burden of depressive disorder. Whilst some clinical predictors of recurrence have been clearly demonstrated (e.g. residual symptoms, previous episodes), the cognitive and psychological processes that may contribute to recurrence risk are less well established. In this study we examine whether cognitive flexibility deficits and rumination are related to recurrence in a remitted clinical sample. METHOD: We compared remitted patients with 2 or more previous depressive episodes (N = 69) to a matched group of healt

Cognitive distortions mediate depression and affective response to social acceptance and rejection.

BACKGROUND: The emotional context insensitivity (ECI) hypothesis suggests individuals with depression have blunted affective responses to both positive and negative events. We tested ECI in a social context to examine how depression relates to affective responses to social acceptance and rejection outcomes. Furthermore, we aimed to identify cognitive mechanisms linking depression with affective response to social feedback. Finally, we tested whether these processes are similar for social anxiety. METHOD: 90 participants (age 18-26 years; 53 women) completed the two-visit Chatroom task. At Vis

Dimensional associations between executive function processes and symptoms of ADHD, ASD, oppositional defiance and anxiety in young school-referred children.

Executive function (EF) difficulties are implicated in Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs), such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Because NDDs are highly comorbid and frequently co-occur with additional clinical problems, it is unclear how specific EF problems are associated with symptoms of ASD and ADHD, whilst accounting for co-occurring anxiety or oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) symptoms. The current study utilised a large sample of young children (n = 438, aged 4-8) referred to Cardiff University's Neurodevelopment Assessment Unit

Impact of chronic alcohol and stress on midlife cognition and locus coeruleus integrity in mice.

BACKGROUND: Excessive alcohol consumption and stress are associated with structural and functional alterations in the brain and impaired cognition. However, the persistence of long-term neural impacts after alcohol and stress is less understood. This study investigated midlife cognition and neuropathological changes following a history of alcohol and stress exposure. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice acclimated to ethanol drinking (15% v/v) before exposure to four cycles of alternating chronic intermittent ethanol (CIE) vapor exposure and repeated forced swim stress (FSS), with control groups exposed to

Neuropsychological and Behavioural Short-Term Effects of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) aims to strengthen weak cognitive flexibility and central coherence in adult and adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN). Currently, there are no studies in adolescents with AN that control for learning effects because of re-testing while evaluating CRT. METHOD: Twenty in- and outpatients with AN aged 12 to 18 years received CRT. Assessment took place directly before and after the intervention. Performance was compared to 20 age-, gender-, IQ-, and test-retest interval matched healthy controls, which did not receive CRT. RESULTS: AN patients showed an

Benefits of group cognitive remediation therapy in anorexia nervosa: case series.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is a treatment targeting cognitive difficulties in psychiatric disorders. CRT has been used with patients with severe anorexia nervosa (AN) in individual and group formats. Research of group CRT in AN is limited. METHODS: Evaluation of a series of CRT groups delivered in inpatient and intensive daycare services was performed. Participants' self-reported cognitive flexibility and central coherence, as well as motivation to change were assessed pre- and post-group. Additionally, patients' evaluative feedback was collected after completion of the g

Cognitive effects of subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation in rats.

Vagal afferents are a crucial neuronal component of the gut-brain axis and mediate the information flow from the viscera to the central nervous system. Based on the findings provided by experiments involving vagus nerve stimulation, it has been suggested that vagal afferent signaling may influence various cognitive functions such as recognition memory and cognitive flexibility. Here, we examined this hypothesis using a rat model of subdiaphragmatic vagal deafferentation (SDA), the most complete and selective abdominal vagal deafferentation method existing to date. We found that SDA did not aff

Neonatal hypoxia impairs serotonin release and cognitive functions in adult mice.

Children who experienced moderate perinatal asphyxia (MPA) are at risk of developing long lasting subtle cognitive and behavioral deficits, including learning disabilities and emotional problems. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) regulates cognitive flexibility and emotional behavior. Neurons that release serotonin (5-HT) project to the PFC, and compounds modulating 5-HT activity influence emotion and cognition. Whether 5-HT dysregulations contribute to MPA-induced cognitive problems is unknown. We established a MPA mouse model, which displays recognition and spatial memory impairments and dysfuncti

Cognitive performance in children with acute early-onset anorexia nervosa.

When anorexia nervosa (AN) occurs in children below the age of 14 years, it is referred to as early-onset AN (EO-AN). Over the last years, there has been an increased focus on the role of cognitive functioning in the development and maintenance of AN. Adults with AN show inefficiencies in cognitive functions such as flexibility and central coherence. Systematic neuropsychological examinations of patients with EO-AN are missing. Thirty children with EO-AN and 30 adolescents with AN, as well as 60 healthy controls (HC) underwent an extensive neuropsychological examination. ANOVAs with post hoc t

Theta-Alpha Dysregulation reveals impaired endogenous cognitive control in adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by rigid thoughts and behaviors that may compromise cognitive flexibility, yet, especially in adolescence results are inconclusive. This is all the more the case concerning the question whether flexibility deficits emerge specifically when endogenous control, internal monitoring, and working-memory-dependent task-set management are required. In an EEG-beamforming study, we examined adolescents with OCD (N = 68) and healthy controls (HC) (N = 73) in a task-switching paradigm with cue-based (exogenous, externally guided) and memory-based (endo

Cognitive Deficits in Female GPR158 Knockout Mice Revealed by Automated Home-Cage Testing.

GPR158 is a G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) that is abundantly expressed in the brain and has been shown to organize synaptic architecture and regulate synaptic function. Previous studies have demonstrated a role for GPR158 in hippocampal-dependent learning and stress-related affective behaviors yet its contribution to cognitive function under naturalistic, low-stress conditions remains unclear. Here, we investigated the role of GPR158 in spatial learning, cognitive flexibility, and working memory using both traditional and automated home-cage paradigms. The use of automated, socially enrich

Stuck on you! Social brain stimulation increases the cognitive effort required to return to the egocentric perspective.

Flexible switching between self and other perspectives is critical for adaptive social cognition and is thought to rely on the dynamic regulation of self-other representations. Although neuroimaging implicates the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) in perspective-taking, causal evidence for their contributions to perspective switching is lacking. Here, we applied focal transcranial direct current stimulation (f-tDCS) to the dmPFC and rTPJ while participants completed a visual perspective-taking task requiring switches between egocentric and altercen
