Microwave-Assisted Plastic Upcycling: Dynamic Data Reconciliation, Parameter Estimation, and Kinetic Modeling.

Microwave (MW)-assisted catalytic pyrolysis offers a promising pathway for efficient plastic upcycling. This work develops an integrated modeling framework combining dynamic data reconciliation, a temperature-dependent rate model, and a yield model to represent the time-varying production rate of components in MW-assisted LDPE pyrolysis conducted in a batch reactor. An Arrhenius-type rate model with a temperature-dependent reaction order is developed. A biexponential correlation is proposed for the yield of gaseous products that enables to capture the evolving product formation behavior during

Environmental drivers of parasitic nematode infection in wild ungulates in the Serengeti National Park.

Parasite infections in host populations frequently display seasonal patterns that can shape host behavior, fitness, and population dynamics. Despite recognition that seasonality plays a key role in infection dynamics across numerous host-parasite systems, the drivers of seasonal infection dynamics for parasites with different life cycles are often unknown. This lack of system-specific understanding restricts our ability to predict when and why parasite infections and their cascading effects on host populations will have the greatest impact. We investigated how seasonality and environmental var

Differences in Molecular Structure between Vitrinite and Inertinite and Their Impact on Coal Conversion and Utilization.

To compare the differences in chemical structure between vitrinite and inertinite and their effects on transformation and utilization, this paper separated vitrinite and inertinite from three parent coal samples (high-volatile bituminous coal (Rmax (%) = 0.65), medium-volatile bituminous coal (Rmax (%) = 1.25), and low-volatile bituminous coal (Rmax (%) = 1.7)), and the differences in chemical structure were analyzed from three aspects: aromatic structure, aliphatic structure, and cross-linking structure. The molecular structure model of a single maceral was constructed, and the chemical bond

[Effects of coffee and caffeine on fertility, reproduction, lactation, and development. Review of human and animal data].

In the present review, we have examined the effects of coffee ingestion on fertility, reproduction, lactation and development. The potential effects of coffee consumption on fertility, spontaneous abortion and prematurity are not clearly established but appear to be quite limited. In rodents, caffeine can induce malformations but this effect appears in general at doses never encountered in humans. Indeed, as soon as the quantity of caffeine is divided over the day, as is the case for human consumption, the teratogenic effect of caffeine disappears in rodents. Coffee ingested during gestation i

Occupational safety and health standards.

If we are to approach developing a safe and healthful workplace in a more timely fashion, a more generic approach must be considered and applied instead of developing recommendations and standards simply on a substance-by-substance basis, an approach that has been the most prominent. Some examples in which developing generic standards may be appropriate are: cholinesterase-inhibiting substances, neurotoxic agents, reproductive hazards, cold environments, and vibration syndrome, to name but a few. It is important to recognize that developing standards based on individual substances often does n

Source-dependent of dissolved organic matter interfacial transport and component fractionation retention in NAPL-contaminated aquifers.

Contaminated aquifers can alter the geochemical behavior and fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater systems. To date, research has almost entirely focused on the contaminants themselves, while the mechanisms by which DOM sources regulate their interfacial retention and transport within contaminated source areas remain unclear. This study uses field data from a coking site to confirm that the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) zone is a hotspot for DOM accumulation in contaminated subsurface environments. Through integrated column and microfluidic experiments, we found that DOM is s

Navigating taxonomic confusion: three novel freshwater crabs (Brachyura: Potamonautidae: Potamonautes) nested within a species complex in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa.

During the present study species boundaries we examined in the freshwater crab species complex (comprising Potamonautes clarus Gouws, Stewart & Coke, 2000 and P. depressus Krauss, 1843). DNA sequence data from three mitochondrial loci and one nuclear locus were used for additional specimens sampled along the Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. Phylogenetic analyses using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood platforms incorporating additional sample localities using a total evidence DNA sequence dataset revealed the presence of a monophyletic Drakensberg Mountain g

Stabilization of the Bio-Oil Organic Phase via Solvent-Assisted Hydrotreating, Part 1: Investigating the Influence of Various Solvents.

Conventional mild hydrotreatment processes of bio-oil present significant challenges of a high degree of polymerization, a low oil yield, high coke formation, and poor catalyst recovery. To address these challenges, the current study looked into investigating and enhancing the properties of raw bio-oil organic phase samples via a solvent-assisted stabilization approach using methanol (METH), ethanol (ETH), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and ethyl ether (DME). Solvents like methanol (METH) and ethanol (ETH), which are highly polar, yielded higher oil fractions (64% and 62%, respectively) compared to

Probing the Interface of Plasma, Metal, and Catalyst Support in Plasma-Assisted Dry Methane Reforming on Pt-Based Catalysts.

Nonthermal plasma (NTP)-assisted dry methane reforming (DMR) on supported metal catalysts has emerged as a promising method for sustainable, electrified conversion of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2), which are valuable chemical/fuel precursors and energy carriers. NTP-assisted DMR has been reported to enhance reaction rates and reduce catalyst deactivation relative to purely thermal operation. However, the complex interactions between the plasma, metal nanoparticles, and catalyst support under reaction conditions complicate mechanistic interpr

Postintubation Tracheal Rupture in a Patient With Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) Tracheitis.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) can cause a range of infections, including orolabial herpes and, in rare cases, tracheobronchitis, especially in immunocompromised patients. Inflammation from such infections might increase the risk of postintubation tracheal rupture, a serious complication characterized by subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema and pneumothorax. This case report presents a rare instance of tracheal rupture following intubation in a patient with HSV-1 tracheitis. A 70-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus presented to the hospital with altered mental status after drinking a

Chemoselective derivatisation and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry for the determination of hydroxyl functional groups within complex bio-oils.

Bio-oils are a renewable alternative resource for the production of fine chemicals and fuels. Bio-oils are characterised by a high content of oxygenated compounds with a diverse array of different chemical functionalities. Here, we performed a chemical reaction to transform the hydroxyl group of the various components in a bio-oil prior to characterisation with ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS). The derivatisations were first evaluated using twenty lignin-representative standards with different structural features. Our results indicate a highly chemoselective transformation of the

Catalytic pyrolysis of harmful plastic waste to alleviate environmental impacts.

Wax is a detrimental byproduct of plastic waste pyrolysis causing challenges upon its release into the environment owing to persistence and potential toxicity. In this study, the valorization of wax materials through conversion into BTEX (i.e., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) was achieved via catalytic pyrolysis using zeolite-based catalysts. The potential of two types of waxes, spent wax (SW), derived from the pyrolysis of plastic waste, and commercial paraffin wax (PW), for BTEX generation, was investigated. Using HZSM-5, higher yields of oil (54.9 wt%) and BTEX (18.2 wt%) were p

Environmental implications of the quality of charcoal briquettes and lump charcoal used for grilling.

Numerous studies have been conducted to assess air pollution and human health risks arising from exposure to outdoor cooking, but limited standards have been implemented around the world to assure fuel quality. While charcoal briquettes and lumps are a popular fuel choice for grilling, almost no data specifying their properties are available to consumers. Because the properties of fuels affect the flue gases, it is critical to understand how the quality of grilling briquettes and lumps translates not only into the quality of the grilled food, but, even more importantly, how their emissions imp
