Enhancing combined composting with cattle slurry solids as a bulking agent: Synergistic improvements in earthworm performance, lignocellulose degradation, and greenhouse gas mitigation.

Coupling membrane-covered composting with vermicomposting is an emerging strategy for livestock manure management. However, crop straw, the conventional bulking agent, poses challenges due to inconsistent supply and slow biodegradation, prolonging the composting cycle. Therefore, identifying readily available and biodegradable alternative bulking agents is crucial. This study evaluated the effects of the solid fraction of cattle slurry (SCM), the solid fraction of pig slurry, and water hyacinth as alternative bulking agents on the combined composting process, using wheat straw as the control.

Nitric acid-modified co-pyrolyzed biochar from gentamicin mycelial residue and biomass regulates cattle manure composting: Reducing carbon loss and enhancing humification.

Aerobic composting is an effective technology for organic waste recycling; however, it is often hindered by substantial carbon loss, mainly in the form of CO2 and CH4, and slow humification. To address these challenges, this study evaluated the effects of nitric acid (HNO3)-modified co-pyrolyzed biochar derived from gentamicin mycelial residue, food waste, and wheat straw on the composting of cattle manure. The results showed that, compared with the control, unmodified co-pyrolyzed biochar group (GBC) increased cumulative CO2 emissions by 24.85%, but reduced cumulative CH4 emissions by 45.90%.

Long-term effects of composted cattle manure on biomass production, nutritive value, and digestibility of dwarf late Napier grass.

Composted cattle manure provides essential nutrients and organic matter that improve soil fertility and support forage production on marginal lands. Dwarf late (DL) Napier grass [Cenchrus purpureus (Schumach) Morrone (syn. Pennisetum purpureum Schumach)] is a high-yielding tropical forage whose productivity and nutritive value depend heavily on appropriate nutrient management. This study evaluated the long-term effects of composted cattle manure application on the biomass production, nutritive value, fiber composition, and digestibility of DL Napier grass over two consecutive years under a tro

Biocontrol effects of bacteria isolated from compost tea against postharvest disease of tomato fruit (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Prominent postharvest pathogens of tomato fruit include Alternaria spp. and Botrytis cinerea. While the control of such pathogens typically relies on synthetic chemical fungicides preharvest, microbial biocontrol agents are a sustainable and promising alternative postharvest. Bacillus velezensis SH1 and SH2 and Pseudomonas azotoformans SH3 were previously isolated from disease-suppressive compost tea. To evaluate their effectiveness against tomato pathogens, the bacteria, their cell-free culture filtrates and precipitated subfractions were tested against mycelial growth in vitro. Suppressive e

Spent casing, Sphagnum moss, grass fibers, and green compost as peat alternatives in casing soils for Agaricus bisporus cultivation.

Agaricus bisporus, the button mushroom, is commonly grown in compost, which is overlaid with casing soil to induce fructification of the crop. Casing currently consists mainly of peat, but peat use is under pressure due to environmental concerns. We previously identified multiple materials that can be used to partially replace peat in casing soil without having a substantial negative effect on mushroom yield or disease suppressiveness. Here, we investigated what percentage of peat can be replaced by each of these materials (spent casing, Sphagnum moss and a processed grass component) as well a

Evaluation of the performance of iron-supplemented pelletised compost as packing material in biofilters for odour abatement in domestic wastewater treatment plants.

Odour emissions from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are a growing concern due to their negative impact on both workers and surrounding communities, with compounds like H2S, NH3 and volatile organic contaminants (VOCs) contributing to air pollution and potential health issues. Biological technologies, such as biofilters (BFs), are an environmentally sustainable and cost-effective platform for odour control in WWTPs. The use of by-products from WWTPs as packed bed material in BFs would support a circular economy within the water sector. This research evaluates the performance of iron-doped

Response of wine grape growth, development and the transfer of copper, lead, and cadmium in soil-fruit system to sludge compost amendment.

Sludge is an organic waste after domestic sewage being treated and contains phytonutrients and organic matter. In this study, recycling of sludge compost (SC) and its compound fertilizer (SCF) to wine grape resulted in improvement in vegetative growth, reproductive development of wine grape, and potential wine quality of grape fruit. The amounts of Cu, Pb, and Cd in grape fruit were significantly higher in response to sludge amendment than in the control, but were all below the permissible limits for agricultural product. The contents of Cu and Pb in sludge-amended soil decreased with increasi

Isolation and application of a mixotrophic sulfide-oxidizing Cohnella thermotolerans LYH-2 strain to sewage sludge composting for hydrogen sulfide odor control.

To investigate the influences of sulfide oxidizing bacteria on H2S odor control in sewage sludge composting, a facultative chemolithotroph strain was isolated and identified as Cohnella thermotolerans LYH-2. Strain LYH-2 decreased the initially added sulfide by 94.6% when glucose and NH4Cl were used as the optimal energy substrates. The biotransformation of sulfide substrates followed first-order reaction kinetics, and the highest degradation rate constant (0.0537 h-1) and bacterial dry weight (0.745 g/L) were obtained at 300 mg/L of initial sulfide. The C. thermotolerans strain was inoculated

Change of the chemical composition and biodegradability of the Van Soest soluble fraction during composting: a study using a novel extraction method.

Van Soest fractionation is widely employed to characterize exogenous organic matter. The soluble fraction of Van Soest fractionation (SOL, extracted using hot water and then neutral detergent) often increases in line with compost maturity, although it is generally considered as labile. We have developed an alternative extraction method that comprises four successive steps (extraction using hot water, sodium tetraborate, dichloromethane/methanol and chelating resin) in order to clarify the chemical nature of the SOL fraction and explain its biodegradability. This method was tested on municipal

Biotransformation of acetaminophen by a bacterial consortium isolated from wastewater treatment plant and household compost: metabolite profiling and kinetic insights.

The increasing detection of pharmaceutical micropollutants in aquatic environments raises concerns due to their persistence and incomplete removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Among the various biological approaches, bacterial consortia are an effective strategy for enhancing biodegradation efficiency. This study investigated the biodegradation of N-acetyl-para-aminophenol, also known as acetaminophen (APAP or paracetamol), using a local bacterial consortium composed of Enterobacter hormaechei subsp. xiangfangensis A10, Bacillus cereus A16, and Enterobacter hormaechei s

Amelioration of lead (Pb) stress in Brassica campestris L. by synergistic application of biochar and compost under Pb-contaminated soil.

Lead (Pb) is one of the most toxic heavy metals adversely affecting agricultural productivity, soil health, and food safety. Organic amendments (OAs), particularly biochar (BC) and compost (C), can mitigate heavy metal toxicity through Pb (II) immobilization, improved soil physicochemical properties, enhanced nutrient availability, and activation of plant defense systems. Therefore, this study investigated the individual and combined effects of BC (1% w/w) and C (1% w/w), applied solely or in combination (0.5% w/w each), on Pb (II) tolerance in Brassica campestris grown under 500 and 1000 mg k
