Optimal outbreeding is shaped during larval life history in the splash pool copepod Tigriopus californicus.

Inbreeding and outbreeding depression are dynamic forms of selection critical to mating system evolution and the efficacy of conservation biology. Most evidence on how the relative severity and timing of these forces are shaped is confined to self-fertilization, distant outcrossing, and intermediate "optimal outcrossing" in hermaphrodites. We tested the notion that closed population demographics may reduce and delay the costs of inbreeding relative to distant outbreeding in an intertidal copepod with separate sexes and a biphasic larval/post-metamorphic life history (Tigriopus californicus). Derivation of water quality criteria for paraquat, bisphenol A and carbamazepine using quantitative structure-activity relationship and species sensitivity distribution (QSAR-SSD).

The risk assessment of an expanding array of emerging contaminants in aquatic ecosystems and the establishment of water quality criteria rely on species sensitivity distribution (SSD), necessitating ample multi-trophic toxicity data. Computational methods, such as quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR), enable the prediction of specific toxicity data, thus mitigating the need for costly experimental testing and exposure risk assessment. In this study, robust QSAR models for four aquatic species (Rana pipiens, Crassostrea virginica, Asellus aquaticus, and Lepomis macrochirus) were

The Smallest Isoform of Metridia longa Luciferase as a Fusion Partner for Hybrid Proteins.

Bioluminescent proteins are widely used as reporter molecules in various in vitro and in vivo assays. The smallest isoform of Metridia luciferase (MLuc7) is a highly active, naturally secreted enzyme which, along with other luciferase isoforms, is responsible for the bright bioluminescence of marine copepod Metridia longa. In this study, we report the construction of two variants of a hybrid protein consisting of MLuc7 and 14D5a single-chain antibody to the surface glycoprotein E of tick-borne encephalitis virus as a model fusion partner. We demonstrate that, whereas fusion of a single-chain a

Adverse effects of methylmercury (MeHg) on life parameters, antioxidant systems, and MAPK signaling pathways in the copepod Tigriopus japonicus.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a concerning environmental pollutant that bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in the aquatic food web. However, the effects of MeHg on marine zooplankton are poorly understood even though zooplankton are considered key mediators of the bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg in high-trophic marine organisms. Here, the toxicity of MeHg in the benthic copepod Tigriopus japonicus was assessed, and its adverse effects on growth rate and reproduction were demonstrated. Antioxidant enzymatic activities were increased in the presence of MeHg, indicating that these enzymes pla

Sea lice (Siphonostomatoida: Caligidae) diversity on littoral fishes from the south-eastern Pacific coast determined from morphology and molecular analysis, with description of a new species (Lepeophtheirus confusum).

Parasitic copepods of the family Caligidae are common on marine fish worldwide, and some species are responsible for disease outbreaks in aquaculture. Ten species of Lepeophtheirus have thus far been described in the south-eastern Pacific coast. Seven species have been recorded from littoral fish species. However, the latitudinal distribution and host ranges of these Lepeophtheirus spp. are not known. We evaluated, using morphology and molecular analyses, the taxonomic diversity, geographical distributions and host range of known Lepeophtheirus species. Seventeen fish species were examined for

Risk factor analysis for sea lice, Caligus rogercresseyi, levels in farmed salmonids in southern Chile.

Sea lice, Caligus rogercresseyi, are ectoparasitic copepods, which severely affect the salmon farming industry in southern Chile, reducing the health status of fish and producing both direct and indirect economic losses. Local farmers have reported increasing infestation levels since 2004, reaching a peak in 2007. In response to this situation, the Chilean Fisheries Service (Sernapesca) developed a surveillance programme; the first step of which consisted of a general survey of salmon farms. This survey included documenting counts of parasite burdens on fish and measurements of several husband

Randomized clinical trial to investigate the effectiveness of teflubenzuron for treating sea lice on Atlantic salmon.

A double-blind, randomized control clinical trial was performed to investigate the effectiveness of teflubenzuron in controlling sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis on farmed Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. A total of 40 sea cages from 3 commercial cage sites in Atlantic Canada were used in this Good Clinical Practice (GCP) trial. The teflubenzuron was administered in the feed at a dosage of 10 mg kg(-1) biomass d(-1) for 7 d. Medicated and control cages were matched by site, cage size, and pre-treatment mean lice counts using cages as the unit of concern. Post-treatment lice counts and staging of d

What lies beneath the ice? How gadolinium affects Cyclops abyssorum during Alpine winters.

The increasing anthropogenic release of gadolinium (Gd) from medical contrast agents raises concern regarding its fate and ecotoxicological effects in freshwater ecosystems. Gd may reach alpine lakes through atmospheric deposition, entering environments already fragile due to extreme conditions. This study examined the sublethal effects of Gd on the alpine copepod Cyclops abyssorum under simulated winter conditions (4 °C, darkness). Organisms were exposed for 14 days to 1-150 µg/L Gd, and oxidative stress biomarkers were measured. Glutathione peroxidase activity increased with concentration, w

Toxic effect of triphenyltin in the presence of nano zinc oxide to marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus.

Marine organisms are naturally exposed to different environmental pollutants including organic pollutants and nanoparticles. The interactive effects between nanoparticles and other chemicals on aquatic organisms have raised concerns regarding the potential of nanomaterials as the vector for other chemicals. In the present study, the effect of nano zinc oxide (nZnO) on the bioavailability of triphenyltin chloride (TPTCl) was studied, and their combined acute and reproductive toxicity to the marine copepod Tigriopus japonicus were evaluated. At experimental concentration ranges of nZnO in this s

Horizontal and vertical distribution of sea lice larvae (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) in and around salmon farms in the Bay of Fundy, Canada.

The sea louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is parasitic to salmonid species in the Northern Hemisphere and has become a widespread biological and economic problem for the salmon farming industry. A better understanding is needed of their spatial distribution and early life history to disrupt the life cycle of the sea louse. In this study, sea lice larval densities within salmon farms, between salmon farms and reference sites, and at various depths were quantified using both plankton pumps and plankton nets. Farm sites exhibited significantly higher densities than reference sites; however, these d

Stress response of Salmo salar (Linnaeus 1758) facing low abundance infestation of Caligus rogercresseyi (Boxshall & Bravo 2000), an object in the tank, and handling.

This study looks at how low infestation loads of adult Caligus rogercresseyi and other stressors affect the physiology of Salmo salar. Experimental fish groups were with (infested) or without (control) exposure to the parasite. The parasite cohort was followed for 78 days post-infestation (dpi), and only adult lice were observed. Additional stressors were applied at 60 and 75 dpi. The analysis included measurements of fish physiology and weight. Low-level infestations by adult C. rogercresseyi for more than 50 dpi induced moderate stress in S. salar as well as a high energy demand and increase

Gene expression in Atlantic salmon skin in response to infection with the parasitic copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis, cortisol implant, and their combination.

BACKGROUND: The salmon louse is an ectoparasitic copepod that causes major economic losses in the aquaculture industry of Atlantic salmon. This host displays a high level of susceptibility to lice which can be accounted for by several factors including stress. In addition, the parasite itself acts as a potent stressor of the host, and outcomes of infection can depend on biotic and abiotic factors that stimulate production of cortisol. Consequently, examination of responses to infection with this parasite, in addition to stress hormone regulation in Atlantic salmon, is vital for better understa

Parasites and hepatic lesions among pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum), during early seawater residence.

Juvenile pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha (Walbaum), in the Broughton Archipelago region of western Canada were surveyed over 2 years for sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi), gross and microscopic lesions and evidence of infections with viruses and bacteria. The 1071 fish examined had an approximate ocean residence time no longer than 3 months. A high prevalence of degenerative liver lesions, renal myxosporean parasites and a low prevalence of skin lesions and sea lice were observed. No indications of viral or bacterial diseases were detected in either year. The monthly

Hydrocarbon contamination decreases mating success in a marine planktonic copepod.

The mating behavior and the mating success of copepods rely on chemoreception to locate and track a sexual partner. However, the potential impact of the water-soluble fraction of hydrocarbons on these aspects of copepod reproduction has never been tested despite the widely acknowledged acute chemosensory abilities of copepods. I examined whether three concentrations of the water-soluble fraction of diesel oil (0.01%, 0.1% and 1%) impacts (i) the swimming behavior of both adult males and females of the widespread calanoid copepod Temora longcornis, and (ii) the ability of males to locate, track

Consequences of microhabitat selection for reproductive success in the parasitic copepod Neobrachiella spinicephala (Lernaeopodidae).

Narrow site specificity in parasites is assumed to be associated with fitness benefits, such as higher reproductive success, although this is never quantified. We linked the body mass and combined mass of egg sacs of female copepods, Neobrachiella spinicephala, parasitic on the sandperch, Pinguipes brasilianus, to attachment sites on the host. Adult females attach permanently either on the lips, the margins of the operculum, or the base of pectoral or pelvic fins. In addition to influences of sampling site, season and host body length, our analyses revealed important fitness effects. First, at

Chemoreception in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis: an electrophysiology approach.

The search for effective and long-term solutions to the problems caused by salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) has increasingly included biological/ecological mechanisms to combat infestation. One aspect of this work focuses on the host-associated stimuli that parasites use to locate and discriminate a compatible host. In this study we used electrophysiological recordings made directly from the antennule of adult lice to investigate the chemosensitivity of L. salmonis to putative chemical attractants from fish flesh, prepared by soaking whole fish tissue in seawater. There was a

Preparing for the tiny predators: Community readiness and perceptions of copepod-based dengue control in eastern guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Dengue remains a persistent public health challenge in eastern Guatemala, particularly in communities where irregular water supply, domestic water storage, and limited sanitation infrastructure create favorable conditions for Aedes aegypti proliferation. As concerns increase about the sustainability of chemical vector control, biological approaches such as the use of predatory copepods are receiving renewed attention. However, successful implementation depends not only on biological efficacy, but also on community awareness, acceptance, and willingness to adopt unfamiliar control m

Skin transcriptome and microbiome profiling are associated with Atlantic salmon resistance/susceptibility to sea lice infestation.

Salmon aquaculture is continually threatened by sea lice infestations, which impact fish health, welfare, and productivity. Thus, breeding programs enable the selection of phenotypes to improve productive performance. This study uses a controlled, repeated lice infestation model to analyze the skin transcriptome and microbiome of Atlantic salmon concerning their resistance or susceptibility to sea lice infestation. The transcriptomic profile of skin from three phenotypes-resistant (R), susceptible (S), and one salmon family presumably associated with acquired resistance to sea lice (ALR)-was a

Effects of ocean acidification on copepods.

Ocean acidification (OA) leads to significant changes in seawater carbon chemistry, broadly affects marine organisms, and considered as a global threat to the fitness of marine ecosystems. Due to the crucial role of copepods in marine food webs of transferring energy from primary producers to higher trophic levels, numerous studies have been conducted to examine the impacts of OA on biological traits of copepods such as growth and reproduction. Under OA stress, the copepods demonstrated species-specific and stage-dependent responses. Notably, different populations of the same copepod species d
