Conserved fatty acid profiles and lipid metabolic pathways in a tropical reef fish exposed to ocean warming - An adaptation mechanism of tolerant species?

Climate warming is causing rapid spatial expansion of ocean warm pools from equatorial latitudes towards the subtropics. Sedentary coral reef inhabitants in affected areas will thus be trapped in high temperature regimes, which may become the "new normal". In this study, we used clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris as model organism to study reef fish mechanisms of thermal adaptation and determine how high temperature affects multiple lipid aspects that influence physiology and thermal tolerance. We exposed juvenile fish to two different experimental conditions, implemented over 28 days: average tro

Effects of temperature, salinity and composition of the dinoflagellate assemblage on the growth of Gambierdiscus carpenteri isolated from the Great Barrier Reef.

Increases in reported incidence of ciguatera fish poisoning (hereafter ciguatera) have been linked to warmer sea temperatures that are known to trigger coral bleaching events. The drivers that trigger blooms of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of increased temperatures and lowered salinities, often associated with environmental disturbance events, on the population growth of two strains of the potentially ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus carpenteri (NQAIF116 and NQAIF380). Both strains we

The density-driven circulation of the coastal hypersaline system of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

The coastal hypersaline system of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in the dry season, was investigated for the first time using a 3D baroclinic model. In the shallow coastal embayments, salinity increases to c.a. 1‰ above typical offshore salinity (~35.4‰). This salinity increase is due to high evaporation rates and negligible freshwater input. The hypersalinity drifts longshore north-westward due to south-easterly trade winds and may eventually pass capes or headlands, e.g. Cape Cleveland, where the water is considerably deeper (c.a. 15m). Here, a pronounced thermohaline circulation is predicted

Assessing the impacts of sediments from dredging on corals.

There is a need to develop water quality thresholds for dredging near coral reefs that can relate physical pressures to biological responses and define exposure conditions above which effects could occur. Water quality characteristics during dredging have, however, not been well described. Using information from several major dredging projects, we describe sediment particle sizes in the water column/seabed, suspended sediment concentrations at different temporal scales during natural and dredging-related turbidity events, and changes in light quantity/quality underneath plumes. These condition

Landscape transcriptomics reveals ecological constraints on fish under anthropogenic coastal change.

Urban zones are rapidly expanding worldwide, exposing organisms to complex and multidimensional stressors. However, linking organismal responses to environmental change at ecologically relevant scales remains a major challenge. To investigate the constraints imposed on fish living in coastal urban environments, we apply a landscape-scale framework to identify molecular signatures associated with human activities. Using transcriptomes from a common coral reef fish, Chrysiptera cyanea, sampled across 18 coastal sites in Okinawa, Japan, we implement scalable analytical and visualisation tools and

Biophysical and eDNA sampling reveals upwelling-enhanced food availability for larvae of the corallivorous crown-of-thorns seastar, Acanthaster cf. solaris.

Crown-of-thorns seastar (CoTS) predation is a major driver of coral loss on Indo-Pacific reefs, yet the causes of their episodic outbreaks remain debated. One hypothesis suggests that increased nutrient inputs enhance phytoplankton availability, removing food limitation for planktotrophic CoTS larvae. However, field data on larval distribution and associated water quality (WQ) remain limited. We present the first comprehensive dataset on CoTS larvae and WQ parameters-temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate nitrogen (PN), and phytoplankton cell counts-c

Movement traits important to conservation and fisheries management: an example with red snapper.

Site fidelity, space use, and dispersal are commonly estimated with acoustic telemetry (AT) to help inform management and conservation. These behaviors can change with age, habitat and environmental conditions and our ability to accurately estimate them is affected by a study's inference power (design components that affect how accurately detection data represents a species' movements). Red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) have been extensively studied with AT over a range of time periods and regions, although primarily at artificial reefs (AR). Here, we use large (> 12 km2) acoustic positioning

Drivers of willingness to pay among scuba divers in the Great Barrier Reef.

Marine reserves are effective tools for protecting marine resources and ecosystems. However, financing their establishment and maintenance remains a challenge for many locales. Tourists and scuba divers are known to place a premium on pristine ecological conditions typically found inside marine reserves, which can be monetized in some cases by introducing a user fee. Here, we conducted a willingness-to-pay (WTP) study with a survey of 170 scuba divers who visited the Great Barrier Reef. We tested scuba divers' WTP for differing ecological conditions, as well as the protection status of dive si

Benchmarks in organism performance and their use in comparative analyses.

Evaluating the response of organisms to stress assumes that functional benchmarks are available against which the response can be gauged, but this expectation remains unfulfilled for many taxa. As a result, attempts to describe the organismic effects of environmental degradation and physiological stress can prove misleading. Functional benchmarks and the effects of stress are particularly germane to coral reefs that globally are exposed to significant environmental challenges, and in this study, we compiled data on scleractinian corals to describe a reference against which stress responses can

Extreme longevity revealed by 24-year genetic mark-recapture challenges conservation of endangered sea cucumbers.

Coral reef sea cucumbers are heavily exploited despite the precarious conservation status of many species, yet limited life-history knowledge constrains effective management. We used genetic mark-recapture to estimate longevity, mortality, and growth in the endangered, CITES-listed black teatfish Holothuria (Microthele) whitmaei by resampling a population after 24 years. Most individuals (60%) in 2024 were genetically identical to those sampled in 2000, indicating extremely low adult mortality (∼0.04 per year), a conservative mean lifespan of ∼24-27 years, and longevity exceeding 100 years. Nitrogen-Dependent Regulation of Nitrate Reductase in Coral Symbioses.

The nutritional symbiosis between corals and their photosynthetic dinoflagellate partners underpins the ecological success of reef-building corals in nutrient-poor environments. Although coral holobionts can assimilate the abundant yet highly variable environmental nitrate, direct insight into how nitrate reductase is regulated in these symbiotic algae has been lacking. Here, nitrate reductase protein abundance and gene expression were characterized in cultured Symbiodiniaceae exposed to different nitrogen regimes and light conditions, revealing the multifactorial nature of its regulation. The

Conservation of Protein Kinase A Substrates in the Cnidarian Coral Spermatozoa Among Animals and Their Molecular Evolution.

The coral Acropora spp., known for its reef-building abilities, is a simultaneous hermaphroditic broadcast spawning species. Acropora spp. release gametes into seawater, activating sperm motility. This activation is mediated by adenylyl cyclase (AC) and protein kinase A (PKA). Notably, membrane-permeable cAMP (8-bromo-cAMP) promotes sperm motility activation of Acropora florida. While the signal transduction for PKA-dependent motility activation is highly conserved among animals, the downstream signaling of PKA remains unclear. In this study, we used mass spectrometry (MS) analyses to identify

Ammonium supply represses iron limitation to support Symbiodiniaceae growth.

Nutrient exchanges promote the success of symbioses among reef-building corals, endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Family: Symbiodiniaceae), and their microbial symbionts. Nutrient dynamics has considerable implications on the metabolism and proliferation of the coral holobiont, with nutrient limitation known to increase the susceptibility of corals to bleaching by disrupting the host-symbiont nutrient exchange. This study examines how two Symbiodiniaceae species, Symbiodinium microadriaticum RT 362 and Cladocopium goreaui RT 152, respond to varying iron (Fe) availability, nitrate (NO3 -), and amm

MiR-152-3p promotes the development of chronic myeloid leukemia by inhibiting p27.

An increased abundance of macroalgae has been observed in coral reefs damaged by climate change and local environmental stressors. Macroalgae have a sublethal effect on corals that includes the inhibition of their growth, development, and reproduction. Thus, this study explored the effects of the macroalga, Caulerpa taxifolia, on the massive coral, Turbinaria peltata, under thermal stress. We compared the responses of the corals' water-meditated interaction with algae (the co-occurrence group) and those in direct contact with algae at two temperatures. The results show that after co-culturing

Disturbance driven colony fragmentation as a driver of a coral disease outbreak.

In September of 2010, Brewer's Bay reef, located in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), was simultaneously affected by abnormally high temperatures and the passage of a hurricane that resulted in the mass bleaching and fragmentation of its coral community. An outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease among coral colonies was associated with these two disturbances. Gross lesion signs and lesion progression rates indicated that the disease was most similar to the Caribbean coral disease white plague type 1. Experiments indicated that the disease was transmissible through direct contact between colon

Vibrio cholerae: a fundamental model system for bacterial genetics and pathogenesis research.

Species of the Vibrio genus occupy diverse aquatic environments ranging from brackish water to warm equatorial seas to salty coastal regions. More than 80 species of Vibrio have been identified, many of them as pathogens of marine organisms, including fish, shellfish, and corals, causing disease and wreaking havoc on aquacultures and coral reefs. Moreover, many Vibrio species associate with and thrive on chitinous organisms abundant in the ocean. Among the many diverse Vibrio species, the most well-known and studied is Vibrio cholerae, discovered in the 19th century to cause cholera in humans

Taking the Pulse of Resilience in Conserving Seagrass Meadows.

Foundational habitats such as seagrasses and coral reefs are at severe risk globally from climate warming. Infectious disease associated with warming events is both a cause of decline and an indicator of stress in both habitats. Since new approaches are needed to detect refugia and design climate-smart networks of marine protected areas, we test the hypothesis that the health of eelgrass (Zostera marina) in temperate ecosystems can serve as a proxy indicative of higher resilience and help pinpoint refugia. Eelgrass meadows worldwide are at risk from environmental stressors, including climate w

Health issues for surfers.

Surfers are prone to acute injuries as well as conditions resulting from chronic environmental exposure. Sprains, lacerations, strains, and fractures are the most common types of trauma. Injury from the rider's own surfboard may be the prevailing mechanism. Minor wound infections can be treated on an outpatient basis with ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Jellyfish stings are common and may be treated with heat application. Other treatment regimens have had mixed results. Excreted thiocyanate detects live reef fishes illegally collected using cyanide--a non-invasive and non-destructive testing approach.

Cyanide fishing is a method employed to capture marine fish alive on coral reefs. They are shipped to markets for human consumption in Southeast Asia, as well as to supply the marine aquarium trade worldwide. Although several techniques can be used to detect cyanide in reef fish, there is still no testing method that can be used to survey the whole supply chain. Most methods for cyanide detection are time-consuming and require the sacrifice of the sampled fish. Thiocyanate anion (SCN(-)) is a metabolite produced by the main metabolic pathway for cyanide anion (CN(-)) detoxification. Our study

Crystal nucleation and growth of spherulites demonstrated by coral skeletons and phase-field simulations.

Spherulites are radial distributions of acicular crystals, common in biogenic, geologic, and synthetic systems, yet exactly how spherulitic crystals nucleate and grow is still poorly understood. To investigate these processes in more detail, we chose scleractinian corals as a model system, because they are well known to form their skeletons from aragonite (CaCO3) spherulites, and because a comparative study of crystal structures across coral species has not been performed previously. We observed that all 12 diverse coral species analyzed here exhibit plumose spherulites in their skeletons, wit
