Behavioral responses of blue-winged teal and northern shoveler to unmanned aerial vehicle surveys.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become a popular wildlife survey tool. Most research has focused on detecting wildlife using UAVs with less known about behavioral responses. We compared the behavioral responses of breeding blue-winged teal (Spatula discors) (n = 151) and northern shovelers (Spatula clypeata) (n = 46) on wetlands flown over with a rotary DJI Matrice 200 quadcopter and control wetlands without flights. Using a GoPro camera affixed to a spotting scope, we conducted focal individual surveys and recorded duck behaviors for 30 minutes before, during, and 30 minutes after UAV fl

The relationship between plasma steroid hormone concentrations and the reproductive cycle in the Northern Pacific rattlesnake, Crotalus oreganus.

We describe the reproductive cycle of Northern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) by quantifying steroid hormone concentrations and observing reproductive behaviors in free-ranging individuals. Additionally, we examined reproductive tissues from museum specimens. Plasma steroid hormone concentrations were quantified for both male and female snakes throughout the active season (March-October). We measured testosterone (T), 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and corticosterone (B) concentrations in both sexes and 17beta-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) in females only. We observed reprod

The Mascarene Archipelago, a Data-Poor Region for Mobulid Rays: First Records, Seasonal Patterns and Conservation Implications.

The distribution and seasonal occurrence of manta and devil rays (mobulids) remain poorly understood across much of the Western Indian Ocean, particularly within remote island systems. Here, we present the first synthesis of species-level mobulid records for the Mascarene Archipelago (La Réunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues) using a combination of direct and passive citizen-science observations collected between 2014 and 2026. A total of 107 sightings were documented from 75 sighting events, comprising Mobula birostris (n = 29), M. thurstoni (n = 40), M. alfredi (n = 5), M. tarapacana (n = 2) and

Lift outs: how to acquire a high-functioning team.

More and more, expanding companies are hiring high-functioning groups of people who have been working together effectively within one company and can rapidly come up to speed in a new environment. These lifted-out teams don't need to get acquainted with one another or to establish shared values, mutual accountability, or group norms; their long-standing relationships and trust help them make an impact very quickly. Of course, the process is not without risks: A failed lift out can lead to loss of money, opportunity, credibility, and even native talent. Boris Groysberg and Robin Abrahams studie

Shared longitudinal predictors of physical peer and dating violence.

PURPOSE: Peers and dates are common targets of adolescent violence. Prevention programs typically address either peer violence (PV) or dating violence (DV) but not both. However, if PV and DV share predictors, prevention strategies could target both behaviors, yielding economic and time efficiencies. Longitudinal data were examined to determine the extent to which physical PV and DV shared predictors. Guided by social learning and social control theories, both risk and protective factors were examined at multiple levels of the social ecology. METHODS: Adolescents in the eighth through 10th gr

Measuring sex differences in violence victimization and perpetration within date and same-sex peer relationships.

This study examines sex differences in the patterns of repeated perpetration and victimization of physical violence and psychological aggression within dating relationships and same-sex peer relationships. Data were obtained from the Youth Violence Survey: Linkages among Different Forms of Violence, conducted in 2004, and administered to all public school students enrolled in grades 7, 9, 11 and 12 (N = 4,131) in a high-risk school district. Analyses of adolescents who dated in the past year (n = 2,888) show that girls are significantly more likely than boys to report physical violence and psy

Endogenous Glandular Chemistry and Methyl Eugenol-derived Metabolites in the Pheromone Communication of Bactrocera umbrosa.

Bactrocera umbrosa (Fabricius) is an oligophagous fruit fly of economic importance that infests mainly Artocarpus fruits (Moraceae). The sexual communication system of this species is poorly understood, partly due to difficulties in establishing laboratory colonies. Males of B. umbrosa are strongly attracted to and voraciously fed on methyl eugenol (ME), a naturally occurring plant secondary compound. Here, we elucidate the endogenously produced and ME-derived chemical signals involved in the species' communication. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of pheromonal glands revealed th

Understanding the Chemosensory and Detoxification Mechanisms in the Oriental Fruit Fly, Bactrocera dorsalis.

Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) is a major fruit-feeding pest that poses a severe and persistent threat to the horticulture industry in tropical and subtropical regions. Methyl eugenol (ME) is a powerful male-specific attractant phytochemical and pheromone precursor that has been widely exploited in lure-and-kill pest management programs. Upon ingestion, ME is metabolized (E)-coniferyl alcohol (E-CF) and 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol (DMP), which are stored in the male rectal glands and released during courtship to attract females. Despite its ecological significance, the fundamental molecular mech

Characterization of ultrasonic vocalizations of Fragile X mice.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the leading form of inherited intellectual disability. It is caused by the transcriptional silencing of FMR1, the gene which codes for the Fragile X Mental Retardation Protein (FMRP). Patients who have FXS exhibit numerous behavioral and cognitive impairments, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and autistic-like behaviors. In addition to these behavioral abnormalities, FXS patients have also been shown to exhibit various deficits in communication such as abnormal sentence structures, increased utterances, repetition of s

Ultrasonic vocalizations in immature gerbils: emission rate and structural changes after neonatal exposure to androgen.

Emission rates of stereotyped ultrasonic vocalizations in sexually immature Mongolian gerbils are sexually dimorphic. Calling rates in interacting pairs of females are characteristically higher than in male dyads. Juvenile vocalizations produced during paired encounters show a similar spectrographic structure to adult courtship calls. Three experiments examined the developmental effects of a single injection of 100 micrograms testosterone propionate given to 0-12 h old female gerbils on total emission rates, spectrographic structure of ultrasonic vocalizations and display of other social-sexua

Coping with dating violence as a function of violence frequency and solution attribution: a structural modeling approach.

This study presents a structural model of coping with dating violence. The model integrates abuse frequency and solution attribution to relate to college women's choices of coping strategies. Three hundred and twenty-four undergraduate women reported being targets of some physical abuse from a boyfriend and responded to questions regarding the abuse, their solution attribution, and their coping behaviors. Solution attribution mediated the relation between frequency of the abuse and coping. Abuse frequency had a positive effect on external solution attribution, and external solution attribution

Predictors of dating violence among Chinese adolescents: the role of gender-role beliefs and justification of violence.

In Chinese societies, violence among adolescent dating partners remains a largely ignored and invisible phenomenon. The goal of this study is to examine the relationships among gender-role beliefs, attitudes justifying dating violence, and the experiences of dating-violence perpetration and victimization among Chinese adolescents. This study has used self-reporting measures to collect data from a probability sample of 976 adolescents (mean age = 15.9) in three Chinese societies: Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. Research results reveal a high prevalence of dating violence (including physical vi

Observing differences between healthy and unhealthy adolescent romantic relationships: substance abuse and interpersonal process.

Previous research on adolescent romantic relationships has been largely based on self-reports and interview data; as a result, relatively little is known about the interpersonal-behavioral dynamics of adolescent couples. In an attempt to address this gap in the previous literature on young couples, the present study used observational methods to differentiate between healthy and dysfunctional adolescent romantic relationships. Two groups of adolescent couples were recruited to participate in this study: (1) a high-risk group (n=18 couples) in which one or both partners had a substance use diso

Cellular diversity and gene expression profiles in the male and female brain of Aedes aegypti.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a medically-important mosquito vector that transmits arboviruses including yellow fever, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses to humans. The mosquito exhibits typical sexually dimorphic behaviors such as courtship, mating, host seeking, bloodfeeding, and oviposition. All these behaviors are mainly regulated by the brain; however, little is known about the function and neuron composition of the mosquito brain. In this study, we generated an initial atlas of the adult male and female brain of Ae. aegypti using 10xGenomics based single-nucleus RNA sequencing. RESULT

Generation, Coordination, and Evolution of Neural Circuits for Vocal Communication.

In many species, vocal communication is essential for coordinating social behaviors including courtship, mating, parenting, rivalry, and alarm signaling. Effective communication requires accurate production, detection, and classification of signals, as well as selection of socially appropriate responses. Understanding how signals are generated and how acoustic signals are perceived is key to understanding the neurobiology of social behaviors. Here we review our long-standing research program focused on Xenopus, a frog genus which has provided valuable insights into the mechanisms and evolution

Quantitative and Discrete Evolutionary Changes in the Egg-Laying Behavior of Single Drosophila Females.

How a nervous system assembles and coordinates a suite of elementary behavioral steps into a complex behavior is not well understood. While often presented as a stereotyped sequence of events, even extensively studied behaviors such as fly courtship are rarely a strict repetition of the same steps in a predetermined sequence in time. We are focusing on oviposition, the act of laying an egg, in flies of the genus Drosophila to describe the elementary behavioral steps or microbehaviors that a single female fly undertakes prior to and during egg laying. We have analyzed the hierarchy and relation

mAChRs in the grasshopper brain mediate excitation by activation of the AC/PKA and the PLC second-messenger pathways.

The species-specific sound production of acoustically communicating grasshoppers can be stimulated by pressure injection of both nicotinic and muscarinic agonists into the central body complex and a small neuropil situated posterior and dorsal to it. To determine the role of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs) in the control of acoustic communication behavior and to identify the second-messenger pathways affected by mAChR-activation, muscarinic agonists and membrane-permeable drugs known to interfere with specific mechanisms of intracellular signaling pathways were pressure injected to

Metabolic status and respiratory physiology of Gecarcoidea natalis, the Christmas Island red crab, during the annual breeding migration.

With the arrival of the monsoonal rains and after months of inactivity during the dry season, the terrestrial crab Gecarcoidea natalis embarks on its annual breeding migration to the coast. The physiological demands of the migration were assessed by determining respiratory gases in the hemolymph, key metabolites, and energy stores in G. natalis during two migratory seasons. At the end of each day of migration the pulmonary hemolymph PO2 decreased by 1-2.5 kPa, but the hemocyanin remained saturated with O2 and the venous reserve was largely unchanged (O2 > 0.4 mmol x l(-1)). The breeding migrat
