B vitamins are essential micronutrients for human health with prominent antioxidant properties, capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintaining redox homeostasis, protecting cells from oxidative damage. To address global nutrient deficiencies and identify plant-based antioxidant sources, this study quantified seven B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12) in seeds, leaves, and seedlings of five oilseeds (sesame, peanut, soybean, rapeseed, perilla) and two leafy vegetables (spinach, lettuce) via LC-MS/MS, revealing distinct species- and tissue-specific patterns. Notably, ses

Heat stress poses a major threat to global crop productivity, with the male gametophyte being the most thermosensitive stage. While peptide hormones are known orchestrators of plant vegetative adaptation, their roles in reproductive thermotolerance remain largely undefined. Here, we show that phytosulfokine (PSK) signaling determines tomato pollen thermotolerance, as heat-induced anther PSK precursor expression correlates with pollen germination, and exogenous PSK application mitigates heat-induced pollen abortion. Loss of the PSK receptor PSKR1 or the NADPH oxidase Respiratory burst oxidase h

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important staple crops all over the world. Its productivity is adversely affected by aphid infestation. Plant volatiles play a critical role in plant communication, inducing direct and indirect defenses against insect pests. However, little is known about the priming mechanism of key volatiles in wheat. To determine whether and how plant volatile induced defense priming in wheat against the grain aphid Sitobion avenae, a combination of insect bioassays, phytohormone and defense metabolite quantification, and transcriptome analyses were performed

BACKGROUND: IR3535 is among the most widely used synthetic insect repellents, particularly for the mitigation of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue and Zika, as well as to control flies, ticks, fleas, lice and mites. These insects are well-known vectors of deadly diseases that affect humans, livestock and crops. Moreover, global warming could increase the populations of these vectors.
RESULTS: Here, we performed IR3535 dose-response analyses on Drosophila melanogaster, a well-known insect model organism, using electrophysiology and binary food choice assays. Our fin

Persistent application of pesticides often leads to accumulation in the environment and to the development of resistance in various organisms. These chemicals frequently degrade slowly and have the potential to bio-accumulate across the food chain and in top predators. Cancer and neuronal damage at genomic and proteomic levels have been linked to exposure to pesticides in humans. These negative effects encourage search for new sources of biopesticides that are more "environmentally-friendly" to the environment and human health. Many plant or fungal compounds have significant biological activit

Recent research has shown that several managed bee species have specific P450 enzymes that are preadapted to confer intrinsic tolerance to some insecticides including certain neonicotinoids. However, the universality of this finding across managed bee pollinators is unclear. Here we show that the alfalfa leafcutter bee, Megachile rotundata, lacks such P450 enzymes and is >2,500-fold more sensitive to the neonicotinoid thiacloprid and 170-fold more sensitive to the butenolide insecticide flupyradifurone than other managed bee pollinators. These findings have important implications for the safe

Lactobacilli are commonly used as probiotics in poultry to improve production parameters and to increase chicken resistance to enteric infections. However, lactobacilli do not efficiently colonise the chicken intestinal tract, and also, their anti-infection effect in vivo is sometimes questionable. In this study, we therefore evaluated the potential of a mixture of four Lactobacillus species (L. salivarius, L. reuteri, L. ingluviei and L. alvi) for the protection of chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis infection. Whenever the chickens were inoculated by lactobacilli and S. Enteritidis separ

BACKGROUND: Cold stress severely limits the productivity and geographical distribution of mango, a tropical fruit crop of significant economic importance. We combined transcriptomic profiling and functional genomics to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cold tolerance in mango. RESULTS: Comparative analysis of the cold-tolerant Jinhuang (JH) and cold-sensitive Guiqi (GQ) cultivars identified 7,757 unique deferentially expressed genes (DEGs) were specifically altered in JH under cold stress, with significant enrichment in plant hormone signal transduction pathways. Notably, the DEL

Nausea and vomiting are induced by environmental distress and pain; understanding their etiology can improve animal welfare in modern farm operations. Oral administration of CuSO4 induces nausea and vomiting in some mammalian species and in pigeons. Although oral administration of CuSO4 induces retching in chicks, whether it causes true vomiting or nausea-like responses remains unknown. This study examined whether intraoral, intracrop, and intragastric administrations of CuSO4 induced vomiting, retching, and nausea-like responses in chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus). Food intake, crop emptying

Severe aphid infestations drive unsustainable pesticide use, necessitating deeper understanding of aphid-plant-microbe interactions. To control those pests like aphids, which may cause severe infestations on vegetables and field crops, we need to understand how they maintain the relationship with the host plant. So, these studies compiled interesting characteristics of microbial involvements in plant-aphid interaction and the specific roles of bacterial communities, and how those impact the actual interactions between aphids and their plant hosts. This includes aphid-sympathetic (obligate and

Phytopathogenic fungi are a major threat in tropical agriculture, causing diseases in crops and postharvest fruits that lead to significant economic losses. Although synthetic fungicides are commonly used for their control, their environmental persistence and toxicity have raised the need for safer alternatives. In this study, the antifungal potential of CaZn2(OH)6•2H2O] (CZ), ZnO, and Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized por sol-gel (SG), hydrothermal (HT), microwave-assisted (MW), and mechanochemical (MC) methods was evaluated. A total of 53 fungal strains were isolated from symptomatic p

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), primarily produced by Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus, is the most dangerous mycotoxin for humans and contaminates a variety of crops. To limit fungal growth and aflatoxin production in food and feed, research has been increasingly focusing on alternatives to pesticides. Studies show that some aqueous plant extracts with strong antioxidant properties could significantly impact AFB1 production, representing an eco-friendly and sustainable method to protect crops. The present study demonstrates that aqueous extracts of Anonna muricata (AM) and Uncaria tomentosa (UT) in

Plant parasitic nematodes infest crops and present a threat to food security worldwide. Currently available chemical controls e.g. methyl bromide, organophosphates and carbamates have an unacceptable level of toxicity to non-target organisms and are being withdrawn from use. Fluensulfone is a new nematicide of the fluoroalkenyl thioether group that has significantly reduced environmental impact with low toxicity to non-target insects and mammals. Here, we show that the model genetic organism Caenorhabditis elegans is susceptible to the irreversible nematicidal effects of fluensulfone. Whilst t

Botrytis cinerea, a major fungal pathogen of crops, has been extensively studied for its resistance to antifungal plant metabolites and agrochemicals. Evaluating the sensitivity of B. cinerea to these compounds is crucial for understanding its pathogenicity and for developing effective plant protection strategies. This study describes two methods for antifungal sensitivity assessment: the spot assay, which visualizes fungal growth on agar medium supplemented with antifungal compounds, and the resazurin assay, which quantifies fungal metabolic activity in liquid culture. Using saponins as antif

BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd) stress displays critical damage to the plant growth and health. Uptake and accumulation of Cd in plant tissues cause detrimental effects on crop productivity and ultimately impose threats to human beings. For this reason, a quite number of attempts have been made to buffer the adverse effects or to reduce the uptake of Cd. Of those strategies, the application of functionalized nanoparticles has lately attracted increasing attention. Former reports clearly noted that putrescine (Put) displayed promising effects on alleviating different stress conditions like Cd and simi

Drought stress conditions modify source-sink relations, thereby influencing plant growth, adaptive responses, and consequently crop yield. Invertases are key metabolic enzymes regulating sink activity through the hydrolytic cleavage of sucrose into hexose monomers, thus playing a crucial role in plant growth and development. However, the physiological role of invertases during adaptation to abiotic stress conditions is not yet fully understood. Here it is shown that plant adaptation to drought stress can be markedly improved in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) by overexpression of the cell wal

The honey bee is the most common and important managed pollinator of crops. In recent years, honey bee colonies faced high mortality for multiple causes, including land-use change and the use of plant protection products (hereafter pesticides). This work aimed to explore how contamination by pesticides of pollen collected by honey bees was modulated by landscape composition and seasonality. We placed two honey bee colonies in 13 locations in Northern Italy in contrasting landscapes, from which we collected pollen samples monthly during the whole flowering season in 2019 and 2020. We searched f

Routine agrochemical regimes are pervasive in tropical perennial crops, yet their ecological consequences remain poorly understood. We examined how nonselective insecticide exposure, arising from routine crop protection, shapes species composition, phenology, and population regulation of 2 co-occurring thrips, Megalurothrips typicus Bagnall and Thrips levatus Bhatti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), in star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.). We compared a sprayed commercial farm with an unsprayed research farm, combining weekly inflorescence sampling with soil emergence trapping, to track flower-infestin

Soil salinization poses a significant threat to global agriculture, necessitating the development of sustainable strategies to increase crop resilience. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offer a promising solution; however, their effectiveness in saline soils is often limited by their own salt sensitivity. The role of the extracytoplasmic function of the sigma factor AlgU in the salt stress adaptation of the nitrogen-fixing PGPR Pseudomonas stutzeri A1501 was investigated in this study. Through the construction of isogenic algU knockout (ΔalgU) and overexpression (OE-algU) strains, c
