Neurochemical differences between bipolar disorder type I and II in superior temporal cortices: A proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the diagnostic challenges in categorizing bipolar disorder subtypes, bipolar I and II disorders (BD-I and BD-II respectively) are valid indices for researchers. Subtle neurobiological differences may underlie clinical differences between mood disorder subtypes. The aims of this study were to investigate neurochemical differences between bipolar disorder subtypes. METHODS: Euthymic BD-II patients (n = 21) are compared with BD-I (n = 28) and healthy comparison subjects (HCs, n = 30). Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and proton spectroscopy (1H MRS) were performed on a 3T Sie

Validating antidepressant-associated hypomania (bipolar III): a systematic comparison with spontaneous hypomania (bipolar II).

BACKGROUND: According to DSM-IV and ICD-10, hypomania which occurs solely during antidepressant treatment does not belong to the category of bipolar II (BP-II). METHODS: As part of the EPIDEP National Multisite French Study of 493 consecutive DSM-IV major depressive patients evaluated in at least two semi-structured interviews 1 month apart, 144 (29.2%) fulfilled the criteria for bipolar II with spontaneous hypomania (BP-II Sp), and 52 (10.5%) had hypomania associated solely with antidepressants (BP-H AA). RESULTS: BP-II Sp group had earlier age at onset, more hypomanic episodes, and higher

Anabolic androgenic steroids used as performance and image enhancing drugs in professional and amateur athletes: Toxicological and psychopathological findings.

OBJECTIVE: The use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) as performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs), once restricted to professional athletes, now includes amateurs and regular gym visitors. AAS use is associated with psychopathology, yet this relationship is complex and not fully understood. We aimed to assess the presence of AASs and other misused substances in athletes' biological samples and link toxicological to psychopathological findings. METHODS: A multicentre, cross-sectional study in fitness centres in Italy recruited 122 professional and amateur athletes training in several

Treatment adherence towards prescribed medications in bipolar-II acute depressed patients: relationship with cyclothymic temperament and "therapeutic sensation seeking" in response towards subjective intolerance to pain.

BACKGROUND: Treatment adherence (TA) is crucial during almost any phase of bipolar disorder (BD), including type-II (BD-II) acute depression. While a number of issues have been traditionally accounted on the matter, additional factors should be likewise involved, including affective temperaments and some clinically suggestive psychopathological traits whose systematic assessment represents the aim of this study. METHODS: Two hundred and twenty BD-II acute depressed outpatients were consecutively evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interviews for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Menta

On the intercorrelation of some frequency and amplitude parameters of the human EEG and its functional significance. Communication II: neurodynamic imbalance in endogenous asthenic-like disorders.

In 67 borderline psychiatric patients suffering from schizotypal/slowly developing schizophrenic disorders and 18 patients suffering from cyclothymia, the factor structure of the period (interval-amplitude) parameters of the EEG proved to be similar to that obtained in normal subjects during mental activity and reported in part I (Lazarev, Int. J. Psychophysiol., 28 (1998) 77-98). However, 51 patients with schizotypal disorders with a predominance of asthenic-like symptomatology, characterized by mild thought disorders with difficulty in focusing attention, were distinguished from normal subje

Childbirth and prevention of bipolar disorder: an opportunity for change.

The recent conceptualisation of bipolar disorder as a neuroprogressive illness has highlighted the potential importance of prevention and early intervention in high-risk populations. Undiagnosed bipolar disorder early in the disease course is associated with adverse clinical outcomes and impaired functioning for patients, which in turn has economic consequences. Despite the mounting evidence that childbirth is one of the most potent and specific triggers of manic symptoms, studies are not available on the effectiveness of targeted interventions in the prevention of bipolar disorder in women wh

Quality of Life in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Is Associated with Affective Temperament Traits: A Cross-Sectional Survey of a Polish Clinical Sample.

Background: Affective temperaments can be considered the subclinical manifestations of affective and stress-related disorders, which could have a relationship with many chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of affective temperament traits on disease-specific quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), two types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: The patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of the Memphis, Pisa, Paris, San Diego-Auto-questionnaire (TEMPS-A), which is the 110-item self-reported assessment f

[Statics and dynamics of psychopathies in the concept of Ε. Κraepelin].

The concept of psychopathic personalities presented in the 8-th last lifetime edition of E. Kraepelin's textbook is analyzed. The special interest was guided by the fact that many types of psychopathic personalities were described by E. Kraepelin in other rubrics: «primary morbid states», manic-depressive illness, paranoia, hysteria, Dementia praecox. E. Kraepelin gave also a prognosis of further development of psychopathic personality and by this way analyzed its dynamics. So, for example, he found that the prognosis of unstable personalities is less favorable compared to those with excitable

Affective Temperaments and Illness Severity in Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

Background and objectives: Bipolar disorder (BD) is one of the most burdensome psychiatric illnesses, being associated with a negative long-term outcome and the highest suicide rate. Although affective temperaments can impact on BD long-term outcome, their role remains poorly investigated. The aims of the present study are to describe the clinical characteristics of patients with BD more frequently associated with the different affective temperaments and to assess the relation between affective temperaments and severity of clinical picture in a sample of patients with BD. The influence of childhood abuse, adult stressful life events and temperaments on depressive symptoms in the nonclinical general adult population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown the interaction between heredity and childhood stress or life events on the pathogenesis of major depression. We hypothesized that childhood abuse, affective temperaments, and adult stressful life events interact and influence depressive symptoms in the general adult population and tested this hypothesis in this study. METHODS: The 294 participants from the nonclinical general adult population were studied using the following self-administered questionnaire surveys: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Life Experiences Survey (LES), Temperament E

A downscaled practical measure of mood lability as a screening tool for bipolar II.

BACKGROUND: Current data indicate a strong association between Cyclothymic temperament (and its more ultradian counterpart of mood lability) and Bipolar II (BPII). Administration of elaborate measures of temperament are cumbersome in routine practice. Accordingly, the aim of the present analyses was to test if a practical measure of mood lability was unique to BPII, in comparison with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: Using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders, Clinician Version as modified by us [J. Affect. Disord. 73 (2003) 33; Curr. Opin. Psychiatry 16 (200

Relationship of persistent manic symptoms to the diagnosis of pediatric bipolar spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of bipolar spectrum disorders (BPSDs [bipolar I and II disorders, cyclothymic disorder, and bipolar disorder not otherwise specified]) in youth remains controversial. The present study evaluated the possibility that the presence of persistent manic symptoms over a relatively short interval may increase the probability of a BPSD DSM diagnosis. METHOD: Data were obtained from the screening and baseline assessments collected from 2005 through 2008 of an ongoing prospective, longitudinal study (Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms) examining the diagnosis and phenome

Trait-related alterations of N-acetylaspartate in euthymic bipolar patients: A longitudinal proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Neurochemical changes are responsible for bipolar disorder (BD) pathophysiology. Despite current progress in BD research, mood- and trait-related alterations in BD continue to elicit further investigation. METHODS: In this study, we report a longitudinal proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study evaluating dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) metabolites N-acetylaspartate (NAA), creatine plus phosphocreatine (total creatine [tCr]), phosphorylcholine plus glycerophosphocholine, myo-inositol, and glutamate plus glutamine levels of manic and euthymic adult BD type I patients (n=4

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and weaker: how childhood trauma relates to temperament traits.

Childhood trauma arises from damaging experiences and the absence of a secure and reliable environment for child development. Despite many studies on the risk for developing psychiatric disorders, much less is known on the relationship between traumatic experiences and personality traits. A total of 10,800 participants (mean age 27.7 ± 7.8 years old, 69.8% women) anonymously answered the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Affective and Emotional Composite Temperament Scale (AFECTS) in the Brazilian Internet Study on Temperament and Psychopathology (BRAINSTEP). The results showed that
