Self-reported use of novel psychoactive substances among attendees of electronic dance music venues.

BACKGROUND: Novel psychoactive substances (NPSs) continue to emerge in the United States and worldwide. Few epidemiological studies have examined the prevalence and correlates of use. OBJECTIVE: We examined the extent of NPS use in a high-risk population-attendees of electronic dance music (EDM) parties at nightclubs and festivals. METHODS: We surveyed 682 adults (age 18-25) entering EDM events at nightclubs and festivals in New York City (NYC) in 2015. A variation of time-space sampling was used. We examined the prevalence of self-reported use of 196 NPS and correlates of any NPS use. RESU

Impact of touring, performance schedule, and definitions on 1-year injury rates in a modern dance company.

There is ongoing debate about how to define injury in dance: the most encompassing one or a time-loss definition. We examined the relationship between touring, performance schedule and injury definition on injury rates in a professional modern dance company over one-year. In-house healthcare management tracked 35 dancers for work-related musculoskeletal injuries (WMSI), time-loss injuries (TLinj), complaints, and exposure. The year was divided into 6 segments to allow comparison of effects of performance, rehearsal, and touring. Injuries/segment were converted into injuries/1000-h dance exposu

Effects of supplemental training on fitness and aesthetic competence parameters in contemporary dance: a randomised controlled trial.

Within aesthetic sports such as figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics, physical fitness has been shown to have positive benefits on performance outcomes. Presently the link between physical fitness and aesthetic contemporary dance performance has not been demonstrated within an intervention study. In this study, 24 females engaged in contemporary dance (age 27 ± 5.9 yrs; height 165.3 ± 4.8 cm; weight 59.2 ± 7.6 kg) were recruited and randomly assigned to either an exercise (n = 12) or a control group (n = 12). Three dancers withdrew during the study. The intervention group completed a 6-week

Correlations Between General Joint Hypermobility and Joint Hypermobility Syndrome and Injury in Contemporary Dance Students.

The first objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of general joint hypermobility (GJH) and joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) in BA Dance Theatre 1st and 3rd year students at a contemporary dance conservatory. The second objective was to determine the statistical correlation between GJH, JHS, and injury in this population. A total of 85 (female, N = 78; male, N = 7) contemporary dance students participated in the study. The Beighton score (with a forward flexion test modification) was used to determine GJH, and the Brighton criteria were used to verify JHS. Participants complet

Community-based square dancing is associated with improved physical and mental health in older adults: a 12-week randomized controlled trial in China.

BACKGROUND: Population aging poses significant public health challenges, particularly in maintaining physical and mental wellbeing among older adults. Square dance, a culturally embedded group exercise in China, may offer a practical strategy to enhance functional, psychological, and social health in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: A 12-week single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted among 150 older adults (60-79 years), randomly allocated to a Square Dance Intervention Group (n = 75) or a Health Education Control Group (n = 75). The intervention comprised three 60-min s

Social attention and coordinated movement produce dissociable spectral and network changes during dyadic improvisational dance.

Dance is increasingly delivered as an intervention for social and affective functioning, but a live dyadic encounter confounds several distinct ingredients - social attention, verbal engagement, coordinated movement, and in-the-moment generation - so its neural effects cannot be assigned to any one of them. We recorded dual-brain mobile EEG from adult human participants of both sexes (16 female, 2 male) and a dance instructor across six five-minute conditions that vary these ingredients independently: solitary rest, direct eye gaze, conversation, teacher-led and participant-led mirroring, and

Digital empowerment of dance movement therapy: innovative applications and evidence-based evaluation in mental health interventions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mental health disorders are a severe global public health crisis. Dance movement therapy (DMT) offers unique benefits, but traditional DMT is limited by subjective evaluation, non-standardized protocols, and restricted access. Digital technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and wearable sensors may address these limitations; however, a structural gap remains between technological application and rigorous clinical evidence. METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes literature from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and CNKI. Sources used for popu

The effect of hip-hop dance training on motor competence, physical activity, and enjoyment in early adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses the declining physical activity participation among adolescent girls by evaluating the effects of a 14-week structured hip-hop dance intervention on motor competence, physical activity levels, and enjoyment of physical activity. Given that the competitive nature of traditional sports can alienate some students, especially girls, thereby decreasing overall participation and enjoyment, there is a need for culturally relevant and inclusive alternatives like hip-hop dance. METHODS: This quasi-experimental, pre-test-post-test control group study involved 192 sevent

A Podcast on the Rhythms of Healing: Patient and Physician Insights on Art, Music, Dance Therapy and Creativity in Parkinson's Disease.

This is an outline for a podcast. Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease in which there is increasing loss of dopamine neurones from the basal ganglia (Simon et al. Clin Geriatr Med. 36(1):1-12). Motor symptoms, which are usually asymmetrical, include resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement) and, usually later on, postural instability. PD is primarily a clinical diagnosis although a DaTscan, which if positive shows asymmetrical loss of dopamine uptake in the basal ganglia, is helpful in cases of doubt (Tsang and Walker J Neurol 270(5):2550-2558).

Effects of Ballroom Dance on Physical Fitness and Reaction Time in Experienced Middle-Aged Adults of Both Genders.

Ballroom dance practice might play a pivotal role for successful aging, but its effects could differ depending on dancers' experience level. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of six months of ballroom dance (three times/w) on physical fitness and reaction time (RT) in 24 middle-aged adults who are experienced dancers (age: 59.4 ± 11.6 years). Body composition, handgrip test (HG), standing long-jump test (SLJ), step test (ST), one-legged stance balance test (OLSB), and RT were assessed before (T0) and after six months (T6) of dance practice. RT was re-evaluated four months la

Is Scoliosis Associated with Dance Injury in Young Recreational Dancers? A Large-Scale Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Study.

Some studies suggested that adolescent scoliotic dancers were more likely to sustain dance injuries than non-scoliotic dancers. This study aimed to investigate the association between scoliosis and dance injury among children and adolescent recreational dancers. Identical web-based and paper-based questionnaires were distributed to children and adolescent recreational dancers to collect demographic information, dance experiences, history and location of dance injuries, as well as the frequency of dance injury in the last 12 months. The prevalence rates of the top three dance injury sites (lowe
