Acute and 28-Day Repeated Dose Oral Toxicity Studies of Olaflur, a Common Cariostatic Agent in Children's Toothpaste.

In recent years, olaflur, mainly containing three amine hydrofluorides (compounds 1-3), has been widely used as a cariostatic agent in children's toothpaste. However, there is no report on the systematic toxic evaluation of olaflur thus far. Therefore, acute and 28-day repeated dose oral toxicity studies of commercial olaflur and 1-3 were conducted in rats. Two inorganic fluorides, sodium fluoride (NaF) and sodium monofluorophosphate (SMFP), were selected as positive controls in the 28-day study. The acute oral LD50 values were determined as 35.0, 28.3, 36.5, and 30.7 mg F/kg for commercial ol

Changes in dental fluorosis following the cessation of water fluoridation.

OBJECTIVES: To determine changes in the prevalence of dental fluorosis, and in perceptions of aesthetic concerns due to dental fluorosis after water fluoridation ceased. METHODS: Schoolchildren in second and third grades were examined in 1993-94, 1996-97 and 2002-03 to determine changes in the prevalence of dental fluorosis following fluoridation cessation of the public water supplies in 1992. The Thylstrup-Fejerskov Index (TFI) was used to quantify dental fluorosis. Perceptions of aesthetics were assessed by questionnaires which were sent home to parents. Residence and dental histories were

Effect of a mouth rinse containing amyloglucosidase and glucose oxidase on recurrent aphthous ulcers in children and adolescents.

Recurrent aphthous ulcers are one of the most common painful diseases affecting the oral mucosa in children and adults. The aetiology is poorly understood and the treatment thus has for years mostly been symptomatic. However, there has been some promising methods in decreasing the frequency of aphthous ulcer episodes. One of these is the use of a dentifrice containing the combination of the enzymes amyloglucosidase and glucose oxidase (Zendium). The aim of this investigation was, in a pre-study and a double-blind, crossover study, to report if a mouth rinse containing the same enzymes was effe

Maintenance of gingival health post professional care.

Oral hygiene habits are strongly associated with general health behaviours; good oral self care should result in good dental health. Clinical dental hygiene services have limited long range probability of success if the patient is not diligent in the daily procedures of personal care to remove and control dental plaque. Therefore, it is important to help make the individual aware of their own ability to control and maintain good oral health after a dental prophylaxis through oral care instruction and the use of select antimicrobials to maintain the gingival health. This paper reviews the evide

[Contact allergy in the mouth].

Contact allergy is not frequently seen in the oral mucosa. Oral lichenoid reactions in conjunction with dental restorations, particularly amalgam fillings, are among the most common affections. Subjective symptoms such as burning mouth syndrome, could have an allergic component, but the etiology is unclear and complex. Food additives and oral hygiene products can cause oral lesions of allergic nature. Patch testing is the routine diagnostic tool used by dermatologists, though the interpretation of the clinical relevance is crucial.

Chewing sticks, toothpaste, and plaque removal.

The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of brushing with chewing sticks in removing plaque and to evaluate whether toothpaste has any additional effect on the removal of established dental plaque. Kenyan schoolchildren had their plaque deposits disclosed by means of disclosing tablets and subsequently recorded on four buccal sites of all permanent teeth. The children were then allocated to two groups in a crossover design; in one group the children brushed with chewing sticks and toothpaste; the other group brushed with chewing sticks only. Substantial amounts of plaque were re

Multi-Omics Insights into Gingivitis from a Clinical Trial: Understanding the Role of Bacterial and Host Factors.

Poor oral health is a neglected epidemic, potentially contributing to systemic health issues. We employed a multi-omics approach to investigate the biological changes associated with gingivitis and the effects of stannous fluoride (SnF2) dentifrice on microbial composition and salivary proteomics in an eight-week clinical trial involving 39 participants categorized as high (n = 20) and low bleeders (n = 19). Baseline assessments revealed significant microbial dysbiosis in high bleeders, characterized by a higher abundance of Porphyromonas and Fusobacterium, alongside compromised epithelial bar

Prevention of enamel demineralization after tooth bleaching by bioactive glass incorporated into toothpaste.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of bleaching on the structure of the enamel layer of teeth and the potential of the commercial bioactive glass NovaMin® in two different toothpastes to remineralize such regions of the enamel. Three aspects were considered: the extent and nature of the alterations in the enamel after application of the bleaching agents; the extent of remineralization after application of two commercial toothpastes containing bioactive glass; and whether or not there were differences between the toothpastes in terms of their effectiveness in promoti

[Use of fluorides and dental visits in elementary school students of the Rems-Murr district and conclusions for dental health--results of a parent survey (1993)].

After a dental examination at school a representative sample of 1244 schoolchildren in the Rems-Murr district received a questionnaire which had to be answered by their parents at home. The questions dealt with the use of fluorides and dental consultation of the children. Forty-nine per cent of the questionnaires were returned. The survey shows that fluoride supplementation by tablets enjoys an acceptance of more than 90% in early childhood, but loses much of its importance in later years. Eighty-eight per cent of the pupils brush teeth with a fluoridated dentifrice and ca. 39% of the househol

Toothbrush bristle density: relationship to plaque removal.

A double-blind, parallel, controlled study was conducted to determine the effect of toothbrush bristle density (total number of bristles divided by the brush head area) in removing plaque from tooth surfaces. Ninety subjects (29 males, 61 females), aged 18-65, were randomly assigned to one of three groups using the Sensodyne Search 4-Rowa toothbrush modified to have the following bristle densities: A (4.5 bristles per mm2); B (8.3 bristles per mm2); or C (11.8 bristles per mm2). The average trim height of the bristles was 10.77 mm. Subjects brushed without any dentifrice once a day for 7 days

Nanohydroxyapatite in dentistry: A comprehensive review.

Enamel, being the hardest and the highest mineralized tissue of the human body, contains nearly 96% inorganic components and 4% organic compounds and water. Dentin contains 65% inorganic components and 35% organic and water content. The translucency and white appearance of enamel are attributed to Hydroxyapatite (HA), which constitutes the major part of the inorganic component of dental hard tissue. With the advent of nanotechnology, the application of Nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) has piqued interest in dentistry due to its excellent mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. Compared to HA, n

Situational diagnosis of policies in Latin American and Caribbean countries for the use of fluoride and reduction of sugar consumption.

Policy evaluation and guidance on fluoride use and sugar consumption in Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACC) may provide a scientific evidence basis for policymakers, dental professionals, civil society organizations and individuals committed to improving public oral health. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the extent of implementation of policies/guidelines on fluoride use, and sugar consumption in LACC. The study had two stages. First a questionnaire covering four major areas was developed: fluoridation of public water supplies; salt fluoridation; fluoride dentifric

Maintaining women's oral health.

Women must adopt health-promoting strategies for both general health and the oral cavity, because the health of a woman's body and oral cavity are bidirectional. For general health-maintenance strategies, dental practitioners should actively advise women to minimize alcohol use, abstain from or cease smoking, stay physically active, and choose the right foods to nourish both the body and mind. For oral health-maintenance strategies, dental practitioners should advise women on how to prevent or control oral infections, particularly dental caries and periodontal diseases. Specifically, women nee
