The difference between shorter- versus longer-term psychotherapy for adult mental health disorders: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The optimal psychotherapy duration for mental health disorders is unclear. Our aim was to assess the beneficial and harmful effects of shorter- versus longer-term psychotherapy for adult mental health disorders. METHOD: We searched relevant databases and websites for published and unpublished randomised clinical trials assessing different durations of the same psychotherapy type before June 27, 2022. Our methodology was based on Cochrane and an eight-step procedure. Primary outcomes were quality of life, serious adverse events, and symptom severity. Secondary outcomes were suicide

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy at the Pavillon Albert-Prévost's specialized outpatient clinics during the last 50 years: innovations and evolution].

The Pavillon Albert-Prévost (PAP) has played a leading role in the development of modern psychiatry in the province of Québec. It has also been, in the francophone milieu, the teaching hospital that was the most deeply influenced by psychoanalytic theories. The arrival of somatic approaches, particularly biofeedback and relaxation, in the Psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison service, as introduced by Dr. Jacques Monday in the 1970s, was initially greeted with great scepticism by the majority of his colleagues at PAP. In the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Camille Laurin, then head of the depar

Psychosocial Interventions to Reduce Post operative Pain in Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common surgical remedy for patients with end-stage osteoarthritis. Although TKA is generally effective, a significant number of patients experience chronic post-surgical pain. Psychosocial interventions have increasingly become an area of interest in pain management following surgical procedures. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the impact of pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative psychosocial interventions on reducing the likelihood of developing chronic pain after TKA. Methods: We performed a systematic review following the Cochrane guid

Intensive community and home-based treatments for eating disorders: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Intensive community treatment (ICT) and home-based treatment (HBT) have emerged as valuable alternatives to institution-based intensive treatments (inpatient or day patient) for severe mental illnesses. Although potential benefits of ICT and HBT for eating disorders (EDs) have been proposed, this area of research remains largely unexplored. METHOD: A scoping review was conducted to map the available literature. Four databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, MEDLINE, Web of Science), grey literature, and trial registries were searched. Sources were included if they presented treatments offering

Internet-delivered interventions for personality disorders - A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorders (PDs) form a substantial part of the mental health disease burden. Effective therapies to treat PDs exist, but they are time-consuming, costly, and difficult to scale up. Delivery through the internet could facilitate the scalability of effective treatment methods. OBJECTIVE: This review summarizes existing evidence on internet-delivered psychotherapy for personality disorders. METHODS: Because few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been carried out, we conducted a scoping review. We performed a systematic literature search in PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE,

Outcomes in people with eating disorders: a transdiagnostic and disorder-specific systematic review, meta-analysis and multivariable meta-regression analysis.

Eating disorders (EDs) are known to be associated with high mortality and often chronic and severe course, but a recent comprehensive systematic review of their outcomes is currently missing. In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, we examined cohort studies and clinical trials published between 1980 and 2021 that reported, for DSM/ICD-defined EDs, overall ED outcomes (i.e., recovery, improvement and relapse, all-cause and ED-related hospitalization, and chronicity); the same outcomes related to purging, binge eating and body weight status; as well as mortality. We included 415 stu

Putative dopamine agonist (KB220Z) attenuates lucid nightmares in PTSD patients: role of enhanced brain reward functional connectivity and homeostasis redeeming joy.

BACKGROUND: Lucid dreams are frequently pleasant and training techniques have been developed to teach dreamers to induce them. In addition, the induction of lucid dreams has also been used as a way to ameliorate nightmares. On the other hand, lucid dreams may be associated with psychiatric conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Reward Deficiency Syndrome-associated diagnoses. In the latter conditions, lucid dreams can assume an unpleasant and frequently terrifying character. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We present two cases of dramatic alleviation of terrifying lucid dreams in

[The Project TANGO Training: Supporting intervention with clients with borderline personality disorder in youth protection and CLSCs].

Objectives The relational mode and engagement difficulties of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can elicit a variety of emotions in the clinician. Emotional activation and compassion fatigue are thus common and can lead to counterproductive interventions. Working with this clientele requires the ability to regulate negative emotions and inhibit associated behaviors. However, the processes involved in this emotional work are rarely made explicit and even less taught. The Project TANGO training was developed to help clinicians modify their emotional and behavioral reactions

A Mobile Health Intervention (LifeBuoy App) to Help Young People Manage Suicidal Thoughts: Protocol for a Mixed-Methods Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Self-help smartphone apps offer a new opportunity to address youth suicide prevention by improving access to support and by providing potentially high fidelity and cost-effective treatment. However, there have been very few smartphone apps providing evidence-based support for suicide prevention in this population. To address this gap, we developed the LifeBuoy app, a self-help smartphone app informed by dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), to help young people manage suicidal thoughts in their daily life. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the protocol for a randomized controlled tria

Protocol for a randomized control trial of the Building Regulation in Dual Generations Program (BRIDGE): preventing the intergenerational transmission of mental illness in at-risk preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worldwide prevalence of maternal depression has risen sharply; it is now estimated that one quarter of mothers experience clinically significant depression symptoms. Exposure to maternal depression during early childhood increases the risk for the development of childhood mental illness (MI) in offspring, with altered parenting practices mediating the association between maternal depression and child outcomes. Dual-generation interventions, which aim to simultaneously treat parent and child mental health, show promise for improving outc

A Smartphone-Based Psychological Intervention for Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (Kalmer App): Protocol for a Multicenter Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), defined as the deliberate, self-inflicted damage of body tissue without suicidal intent, is increasingly prevalent among adolescents and young adults and poses a major public health concern. Current treatments are often costly, difficult to access, and not tailored to the specific needs of young people. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions represent a promising avenue for scalable, accessible, and cost-effective support for NSSI, especially when combined with real-time assessments and personalized treatment strategies. OBJECTIVE: This randomized co

Treatment as a moderator and executive function as a mediator of the effect of a mindfulness ecological momentary intervention for generalized anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Theory and research indicated that executive functioning (EF) correlated with, preceded, and stemmed from worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The present secondary analysis (Zainal & Newman, 2023b) thus determined whether EF domains mediated the effect of a 14-day (5 prompts/day) mindfulness ecological momentary intervention (MEMI) against a self-monitoring control (SM) for GAD. METHOD: Participants (N = 110) diagnosed with GAD completed self-reported (Attentional Control Scale, GAD Questionnaire, Perseverative Cognitions Questionnaire) and performance-based tests (Letter

Chronic alcoholism treatment in custodial facilities: Ukraine's experience during independence.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: Chronic alcoholism is a powerful catalyst for commission of many serious and particularly grave crimes - intentional homicide, bodily damage, robbery, plundering, traffic safety violations that led to fatalities. The vast majority of these offenders are sentenced to imprisonment. Although independent Ukraine refused their compulsory treatment, such experience, unfortunately, did not improve the situation. This will require finding new ways of solving the alcoholism problem that may be of interest to both post-Soviet countries and developed democracy countries. The aim
