Hepatozoon spp. are protozoal organisms that infect a wide variety of animal hosts. Three free-ranging American mink (Neovison vison) from Pennsylvania, USA, were diagnosed with hepatozoonosis either as the primary cause of mortality or as a co-morbidity with canine distemper virus infection or trauma. In all cases, protozoa were detected in the lungs and/or heart with varying severity, as characteristic microgranulomas with intrahistiocytic merozoites as well as fewer distinct meronts. Partial 18S rRNA gene sequence from one case was identical to a Hepatozoon sp. previously detected in mink f

The etiology of multiple sclerosis (MS) is unknown, and several hypotheses have been advanced over the past century to explain it. Despite much effort, no single cause has been established. One of the most appealing hypotheses is that of infection due to a neurotropic infectious agent, possibly a virus. There are several lines of data to support this hypothesis. First, there are clear examples of inflammatory demyelinating disease caused directly or indirectly by viral infections in both humans and animals. Second, there is a strong environmental component to multiple sclerosis. Finally, there

Four nine- to 11-week-old puppies developed respiratory and neurological signs due to an infection with canine adenovirus type 2 (cav-2); three of these were euthanased. They had moderate, diffuse pneumonia but there were no histological abnormalities in the central nervous system. Adenovirus-specific nucleic acid was detected by pcr in samples of lung and brain and the amplified product was 99.8 per cent homologous with the cav-2 reference strain Toronto a26/61. The positive pcr result was confirmed by in situ hybridisation in samples of lung, liver and spleen, but not in brain, and cav was i

As part of the national recovery effort, endangered black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) were reintroduced to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, US in 2000. Despite an encouraging start, numbers of ferrets at the site have declined. In an effort to determine possible causes of the population decline, we undertook a pathogen survey in 2012 to detect exposure to West Nile virus (WNV), canine distemper virus (CDV), plague (Yersinia pestis), tularemia (Francisella tularensis), and heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) using coyotes (Canis latrans) as a sentinel animal. The highest

To study the neurophysiological functions of metallothioneins (MTs), localization of MT-I and -II was examined immunohistochemically in a variety of brain lesions in dogs, including infarct, laminar cortical necrosis, hemorrhage, invasive growth of tumour, inflammatory lesions in granulomatous meningoencephalitis and distemper encephalitis. MT-I and -II were demonstrated in both nucleus and cytoplasm of hypertrophic astrocytes in most brain lesions examined regardless of the type, size, localization and duration of the lesions. In addition, MT expression was stronger in a population of hypertr

Serum or heparinized plasma samples were obtained from 3 male (2 adult and 1 weaned calf) and 3 adult female free-ranging bearded seals Erignathus barbatus in May of 1994, 1995, or 1996. Blood samples were obtained from animals taken in subsistence hunts near St. Lawrence Island, Alaska and screened for antibodies to a suite of bacteria and viruses potentially pathogenic for pinnipeds and/or humans. No samples had detectable antibodies to Brucella spp., Phocine distemper virus, influenza A virus or caliciviruses (San Miguel sea lion virus strains 1, 2, and 4 to 13, vesicular exanthema of swine

We examined the consequences of isolation and adaptation to Vero cells for the receptorbinding haemagglutinin (H) gene of four syncytia-forming isolates of canine distemper virus (CDV) and of a dolphin morbillivirus isolate. A Vero-adapted CDV isolate exhibited biased hypermutation, since 11 out of 12 nucleotide differences to other isolates from the same epidemic were U-C transitions. Most of these transitions appeared to have taken place during in vitro cultivation. Previously, biased hypermutation in morbilliviruses has almost exclusively been described for subacute sclerosing panencephalit

Recent outbreaks of rabies and canine distemper in wildlife populations of the Serengeti show that infectious disease constitutes a significant cause of mortality that can result in regional extirpation of endangered species even within large, well-protected areas. Nevertheless, effective management of an infectious disease depends critically on understanding the epidemiological dynamics of the causative pathogen. Pathogens with short infection cycles cannot persist in small populations in the absence of a more permanent reservoir of infection. Development of appropriate interventions requires

To better understand the interaction between attenuated vaccines and host antiviral responses, we used bioinformatics and public transcriptomics data to analyze the immune response mechanisms of host cells after canine distemper virus (CDV) infection in Vero cells and screened for potential key effector factors. In this study, CDV-QN-1 infect with Vero cells at an MOI of 0.5, and total RNA was extracted from the cells 24 h later and reverse transcribed into cDNA. Transcriptome high-throughput sequencing perform using Illumina. The results showed that 438 differentially expressed genes were scr

Raccoon dogs as an ancient species of Canidae are the host of many viruses, including rabies virus, canine distemper virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, and so on. With the development of raccoon dog breeding in recent years, some viruses which infected poultry or pigs were also detected from raccoon dogs. At present, the fecal virome of raccoon dogs has been rarely studied. Using an unbiased viral metagenomic approach, we investigated the fecal virome in raccoon dogs collected from one farm of Jilin Province, China. Many DNA or RNA viruses identified in those fecal samples w

Pterocephalus hookeri (C. B. Clarke) Höeck is a member of the Dipsacaceae family and has been used in traditional Tibetan medicine for thousands of years. P. hookeri clears heat, detoxifies, stops dysentery, eliminates distemper, dispels wind, and relieves stagnation and is mainly prescribed for heat syndrome, dysentery, arthritis, and plague. Approximately 93 chemical compounds have been isolated and identified from P. hookeri, including iridoid glycosides, lignan and triterpenoids. Meanwhile, modern pharmacological studies have shown that P. hookeri has anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatoid art

In the year 2016, 107 reports of adverse reactions following the application of various authorized vaccines were received and evaluated by the IVI (Institute of Virology and Immunology). The notifications were submitted primarily by marketing authorization holders (81) or veterinarians and private persons (26). The aim of the Vigilance System is the identification of rare events to assess the individual risks of the vaccine application. During the last year, the correlation between reaction and vaccination was considered probable in 34% of the cases. As in previous years, companion animals wer

A 1.5 year old neutered male pet ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented with a sudden onset of severe weakness. The ferret was kept with three healthy mates, was vaccinated against distemper regularly and was never ill before presentation. Clinically, the ferret was depressed, had a hyperthermia of 40.3 degrees C, tachypnea and ocular as well as nasal discharge. Blood work revealed a mild neutropenia, blood chemistry a hyperglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, hypocalcemia and hyponatremia. Despite intensive therapy including fluid replacement, antibiosis, anal

The immunosuppressive properties of morbilliviruses including measles and canine distemper virus (CDV) are well known, but the host cells supporting infection are poorly characterized. To identify these cells, a recombinant CDV expressing green fluorescent protein was produced by reverse genetics based on a wild-type strain lethal for ferrets. This recombinant virus fully retained virulence and blazed three lymphocyte-based pathways through the immune system of its host: first, it infected rapidly and massively circulating B and T cells; second, it took over and damaged secondary lymphatic org

Squirrel monkeys with induced canine distemper virus (CDV) encephalitis showed characteristic clinical signs such as seizures or myoclonus, with EEGs showing periodic synchronized discharge (PSD). Histopathologically, there was gliosis and neuronal degeneration diffusely distributed in both the gray and white matters in the subacute phase, the lesions resembling those found in childhood acute viral encephalitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The auditory brain-stem response (ABR) changes were remarkable in the subacute phase, and the recovery of latency was correlated with sur

The complete nucleotide sequence of the mumps virus membrane protein or matrix protein (M) has been determined by sequencing cDNA clones and confirmed by partially sequencing the M mRNA and the genome. The mRNA is 1248 nucleotides long excluding the poly(A) and encodes a protein of 375 amino acids. The molecular weight (38,670), deduced from the amino acid sequence, is in agreement with the molecular weight of the viral M protein estimated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (39-40 kDa). The mumps virus M protein shows 23-27% homology with M proteins of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), measles

The north-east of Scotland (Grampian Region) has undergone three incidence and prevalence surveys, including the present one, since 1970. Results from these indicate a true increase in the prevalence of the disease in the region. The incidence of the disease has remained continuously high and shows a slightly upward trend. Literature on the subject of repeated surveys in different regions of the world has been reviewed in detail. The need for a prevalence study from the south of the British Isles has been emphasised in order to enable one to judge if the increase in Scotland is in keeping with

The paramyxoviruses measles (subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, SSPE) virus and canine distemper virus (CDV) cause an impairment of the catecholamine-induced beta-adrenergic receptor-dependent cAMP generation in persistently infected C6 rat glioma cells. In C6 cells persistently infected with CDV the number of receptors is greatly reduced. Hirata and Axelrod have shown that the number of beta-adrenergic receptors could be regulated by methylation of phosphatidylethanolamine, resulting in lecithin synthesis [Hirata, F. & Axelrod, J. (1980) Science 209, 1082-1090]. We have therefore studied th

To obtain data about select zoonotic and other infectious diseases in free-ranging predators in five ecoregions in Nebraska, sera were collected from 67 coyotes (Canis latrans) and 63 raccoons (Procyon lotor) from November 2002 through January 2003. For coyotes, antibodies were detected against canine distemper virus (CDV, 61%), Francisella tularensis (32%), Rickettsia rickettsi (13%), and flaviviruses (48%). None of the coyote sera had antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi, Brucella canis, or six serovars of Leptospira interrogans. Because serologic cross-reactivity exists among flaviviruses, 14

Multiple enveloped RNA viruses of the family Paramyxoviridae and Pneumoviridae, like measles virus (MeV), Nipah virus (NiV), canine distemper virus (CDV), or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), are of high clinical relevance. Each year a huge number of lives are lost as a result of these viral infections. Worldwide, MeV infection alone is responsible for over a hundred thousand deaths each year despite available vaccine. Therefore, there is an urgent need for treatment options to counteract these viral infections. The development of antiviral drugs in general stands as a huge challenge due to t
