Circulating isoforms of cellular adhesion molecules (CAMs) have been described recently, and elevated levels of certain sCAMs have been reported in various inflammatory diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There are previously no reports on sCAMs in cutaneous LE. Sera from 61 patients with LE: systemic (SLE: n=24), chronic cutaneous (discoid LE, DLE: n= 19) or subacute cutaneous (SCLE: n=8), chronic biologically false positive (CBFP) reactors for syphilis (n= 10) and 32 controls were examined for sICAM-1, sVCAM-1 and sE-Selectin with specific ELISA kits. Protocol forms were rev

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly throughout the globe. The spectrum of disease is broad but among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, respiratory failure from acute respiratory distress syndrome is the leading cause of mortality. There is an urgent need for an effective treatment. The current focus has been developing novel therapeutics, including antivirals, protease inhibitors, vaccines and targeting the overactive cytokine response with anti-cytokine therapy. The overproduction of early response proinflammatory cytokines results in what has been described as a "cytoki

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a vascular complication of pregnancy with limited therapeutic options. It is associated with hypertension and an increase in angiogenic factor soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor. Based on its onset, preclampsia can be categorized into early-onset (E-PE) or late-onset (L-PE) preeclampsia. Thrombo-inflammation, hallmarked by maternal platelet activation and sterile inflammation, is associated with pathophysiology of preeclampsia. However, whether these mechanisms are differentially regulated in E-PE vs L-PE remains unknown.

Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) have impaired vasodilation both dependent and independent of endothelium. The aims of our study were to measure three different biochemical markers of endothelial activation, i. e., plasma thrombomodulin, soluble(s) E-selectin, and von Willebrand factor, in PHPT patients before and one year after successful parathyroidectomy, and to distinguish the potential effect of hypercalcemia and/or high parathyroid hormone from that of major cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, smoking habit) on endothelia

The acute lung injury of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is characterised by inflammatory cell accumulation and activation in the lung. Selectins are a family of adhesion molecules implicated in leucocyte-endothelial adhesion, whose receptors can exist in a cleaved, soluble form. We investigated whether circulating soluble selectin adhesion molecules, obtained from ARDS at-risk patients, were associated with subsequent ARDS development. 82 patients, at risk of ARDS, were enrolled from three well-defined groups (multiple trauma, pancreatitis, perforated bowel). Plasma samples were ob

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Histopathological studies of rejected orthotopic heart transplants suggest that cardiac valve endothelium is spared the inflammatory cell infiltration and tissue damage that occurs in the myocardium. To test whether this apparent protection from leukocyte invasion might be an inherent feature of the valve endothelium, leukocyte adhesion molecule expression and function were analyzed in human pulmonary valve endothelial cells (HPVEC). Use of cultured HPVEC allowed delineation of the potential contribution of functional adhesion molecules from the contribution of

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are characterized by means of a similar inflammatory process in which eosinophils are important effector cells. The migration of eosinophils from the blood into the tissues is dependent on adhesion molecules.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the aspects of nasobronchial cross-talk, we studied the expression of adhesion molecules in nasal and bronchial mucosa after nasal allergen provocation (NP).
METHODS: Nine nonasthmatic subjects with seasonal AR and 9 healthy control subjects underwent NP out of season. Bronchial and nasal biopsy specimens were taken bef

Cell-mediated immune response to herpes simplex virus (HSV) may be important in the pathogenesis of herpes keratitis, erythema multiforme or Behcet's disease. We examined whether herpesvirus infection regulates the expression of cell adhesion molecules on cultured human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC) and the regulation of T-lymphocytes binding to HDMEC. The expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), or E-selectin on HDMEC increased significantly after treatment with HSV-1, HSV-2, or measles virus on HDMEC. Anti-IL-1 alp

Tenascin is a large extracellular matrix molecule expressed at specific sites in the adult, including immune system tissues such as the bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and T cell areas of lymph nodes. Tenascin has been reported to have both adhesive and anti-adhesive effects in static assays. We report here that tenascin supports the tethering and rolling of lymphocytes and lymphoblastic cell lines under flow conditions. Binding was calcium dependent and was not inhibited by treatment of lymphocytes with O-glycoprotease or a panel of glycosidases including neuraminidase and heparitinase but was i

'Stress thrombocytes', i.e. large and presumably hyperfunctioning platelets, is a well-known characteristic of patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Therefore, despite what may be severe thrombocytopenia these patients generally do not suffer from severe life-threatening hemorrhage. The plasma level of soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) is a valuable marker reflecting platelet activation. Available data suggest that interleukin-6 (IL-6) may contribute to the regulation of megakaryocytopoiesis and platelet activity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the status and kin

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is an important mosquito-borne disease in tropical and subtropical regions. Adhesion molecules have not been systematically characterized in the renal tissue of patients with severe dengue (SD). The objective of this study was to detect viral antigens in samples from patients that evolved with SD, correlating with the expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, VE-cadherin, and E-selectin to contribute to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of SD.
METHODS: Kidney specimens from patients with SD were selected according to clinical and laboratorial data and submitted to histolo

In order to determine the effect of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the cell adhesion molecules expressed in human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC), the cells were exposed to varying UVR doses and the cell surface was examined for expression of intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM- 1), and E-selectin. The effect of UVB irradiation on the binding of T lymphocytes to HDMEC was also examined. UVA irradiation did not affect the surface expression of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, or E-selectin on the HDMEC. However, following UVB exposure, ELISA de

Antiendothelial cell antibodies (AECA) have been detected in the sera of patients of autoimmune diseases showing vasculitis. Using IgM-ELISA, we found AECA in 42 (56%) of 75 sera samples from patients with Behçet's disease in a previous study. All of the 15 AECA-positive sera of Behçet's disease patients had an increased expression of the intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), 93.3% of the sera induced the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and 100% of the serum induced the E-selectin molecule on human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC). After stimulation of HDME

OBJECTIVES: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a deadly disease with limited treatment options. Approaches to enhance patient immunity against MPM have been tested but shown variable results. Previously, we have demonstrated interesting vascular modulating properties of low-dose photodynamic therapy (L-PDT) on MPM. Here, we hypothesized that L-PDT vascular modulation could favour immune cell extravasation in MPM and improve tumour control in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors.
METHODS: First, we assessed the impact of L-PDT on vascular endothelial E-selectin expression, a key

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multi-systemic inflammatory disease of uncertain pathogenesis and with no definitive diagnostic test. The aims of this study were to investigate serum levels of miR-181b in BD patients and to correlate this candidate biomarker with disease activity, cytokines, and adhesion molecules to identify new markers that can be used as a diagnostic tool for BD. Blood samples were collected from 96 participants who were classified according to their BD current activity form into 3 groups: healthy control, active BD, and inactive BD patients. MiR-181b was estimated by re
