Blunt trauma to the antecubital fossa causing brachial artery injury and minor fractures around the elbow joint, an easily missed diagnosis with potential devastating consequences: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Blunt trauma causing brachial artery injury in a young patient is very rare. Cases of brachial artery injury may be associated with closed elbow dislocation or instability. Elbow dislocation may not be evident clinically and radiologically on initial presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 37-year-old, right-hand dominant, Malay man who fell approximately 6 meters from a rambutan tree and his left arm hit the tree trunk on his way down. He was an active tobacco smoker with a 20 pack year smoking history. On clinical examination, Doppler signals over his radial and uln

Arthrosis in the elbow joint of young rapidly growing dogs. III. Ununited medical coronoid process of the ulna and osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral condyle. Surgical procedure for correction and postoperative investigation.

A surgical procedure for medial arthrotomy in the elbow joint is described. Surgery was performed in an endeavour to remove an ununited coronoid process and/or a loose piece of cartilage from the humeral condyle. A long term follow up investigation of 58 operated and 20 unoperated dogs was undertaken. The prognosis of dogs operated upon because of osteochondritis dissecans of the humeral condyle, was fairly good; 11 of 15 dogs (73.3%) being reported as showing no signs of lameness. When dogs with the both diagnoses were judged together, the percentage of dogs reported not to be lame was 48.3 a

A correlation study of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society Score and the Oxford Shoulder Score with the use of regression analysis to predict one score from the other in patients undergoing reverse shoulder joint arthroplasty for cuff tear arthropathy.

BACKGROUND: More than 30 different scoring systems are available for evaluating outcomes of shoulder surgery. Unfortunately, given the multitude of scoring systems, there is no objective method to compare results between studies when different scoring systems are utilized. METHODS: We compared the American Shoulder and Elbow Society score (ASES) and the Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS) in patients undergoing reverse shoulder arthroplasty for cuff tear arthropathy. Twenty-nine patients had the ASES and OSS recorded pre-operatively, and at 6 and 12 months follow-up. The paired scores were assessed f

Technique and ground reaction forces in the back handspring.

The ground reaction forces at the hand that produced compression forces and varus/valgus moments at the elbow joint during the double-arm support phase of the back handspring were studied. The relationship of technique, namely elbow joint flexion, to these forces were also studied. Compression forces and forces producing valgus moments have been implicated in overuse injuries to the elbow joint. Video and force plate analysis of six young female gymnasts showed that 1) the elbow joint flexed during the double-arm support phase, and 2) the reaction forces at the hand produced large compression

Congenital Elbow Dislocation: A Case Report.

CASE: We present a case of a 12-day-old male baby who presented with right elbow deformity and inability to flex the elbow. Radiographs and computed tomography scan of the elbow revealed loss of humeroulnar alignment, superior migration of olecranon, and posteromedial displacement, suggesting an elbow dislocation. The child was successfully managed with open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation of the elbow joint. At 1-year follow-up, the child has a well-reduced and stable elbow joint with a functional range of movements. CONCLUSION: Congenital dislocation of the ulnohumeral joint can occur

Reconstruction of coronoid process of the ulna: a literature review.

As a pivotal part of the elbow joint structure, the coronoid process of the ulna plays a vital role in maintaining elbow joint stability. Loss of coronoid process height causes instability of the elbow joint depending on the fracture characteristics and size. The diagnosis and treatment of coronoid process fractures has gained widespread attention from orthopedic surgeons. Nevertheless, few reports have described reconstruction of coronoid process fractures and defects that affect elbow joint stability. Treatment of elbow joint instability induced by coronoid process defects is challenging bec

Effects of the Elbow Flexion Angle on the Radial Nerve Location around the Humerus: A Cadaver Study for Safe Installation of a Hinged External Fixator.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate whether the distance between the radial nerve and rotational center of the elbow joint when observing from the lateral surface of the humerus changes according to passive elbow joint flexion for safe external fixation with a hinged fixator of the elbow joint. METHODS: Twenty fresh-frozen cadaveric arms were dissected. The points where the radial nerve crosses over the posterior aspect of the humerus, crosses through the lateral center, and crosses over the anterior aspect of the humerus were defined in the lateral view of the elbow joint, using fluo

Causes, symptoms, and treatments of nerve entrapments around the elbow: Current concepts.

The elbow is a joint extremely susceptible to stiffness, even after a trivial trauma. As for other joints, several factors can generate stiffness such as immobilisation, joint incongruity, heterotopic ossification, adhesions, or pain. Prolonged joint immobilisation, pursued to assure bony and ligamentous healing, represents the most acknowledged risk factor for joint stiffness. The elbow is a common site of nerve entrapment syndromes. The reasons are multifactorial, but peculiar elbow anatomy and biomechanics play a role. Passing from the arm into the forearm, the ulnar, median, and radial ner

Digital smart internal fixation surgery for coronal process basal fracture with normal joint spaces or radius-shortening: Occult factor of radius-ulna load sharing.

BACKGROUND: Reasonable postoperative humeroradial and humeroulnar joint spaces maybe an important indicator in biomechanical stability of smart internal fixation surgery for coronoid process basal fractures (CPBF). The aim of this study is to compare elbow articular stresses and elbow-forearm stability under smart internal fixations for the CPBF between normal elbow joint spaces and radius-shortening, and to determine the occult factor of radius-ulna load sharing. METHODS: CT images of 70 volunteers with intact elbow joints were retrospectively collected for accurate three-dimensional reconst

Ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis of the elbow: a posterior approach.

BACKGROUND: Identification of fluid in the elbow joint by physical examination alone can be challenging. Ultrasound can assist in the diagnosis of elbow effusion, and guide aspiration of the effusion. OBJECTIVES: We illustrate the anatomy and ultrasound guidance technique of a posterior approach to elbow arthrocentesis using examples of normal and pathologic elbow joint ultrasound images. DISCUSSION: The posterior distal humerus at the level of the olecranon fossa provides an excellent acoustic window into the joint space. This location also provides a safe path for the performance of ultras

An unusual case of elbow dislocation.

The annual incidence of elbow dislocation is 6 to 8 cases per 100,000 in the United States; these dislocations represent 11% to 28% of all elbow injuries. The frequency of elbow dislocation is second to that of shoulder dislocation. Adult elbow dislocations are classified by the direction of displacement and associated fractures. They can be anterior, posterior, lateral, or divergent, with the most common type being posterior displacement of both the radius and ulna in relation to the distal humerus. This case report presents a rare case of a twisting dislocation of the elbow joint without any
