The composition of metallic pigmentations in gingiva and dental roots was determined by means of transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis. The distribution of nutrients such as Na, Cl, K, P, S, and Ca was investigated by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXA) on bulk-frozen mouse muscles infected with Trichinella pseudospiralis. In an attempt to gain information as to whether muscle larvae would modify the element status within muscles of their host. Significant increases in phosphorus concentrations within nurse cells and internal cells of the larva, e.g., the somatic muscle cells and the stichocytes, were shown. This could reflect changes in the energy metabolism and/or in the turnover of nucleic acids of the nurse cell.

Toxic effects of bis (tributyltin) oxide (TBTO) on the rat exocrine pancreas were studied with an electron microscope and X-ray microanalyzer. To measure tin concentrations in the blood, atomic absorption spectrophotometry was carried out. Adult male Wistar rats received an intramuscular injection of TBTO (0.5 ml/kg). Rapidly frozen and freeze-substituted submandibular glands of young female rats were embedded in Epon and processed for histochemical demonstration of calcium with the glyoxal bis (2-hydroxyanil) (GBHA) staining method. In an attempt to develop an animal model for the disease cystic fibrosis, mice were chronically treated with diuretics. In addition, pregnant mice were treated with diuretics and the effect of this treatment in utero on the newborn mice was studied. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Poly P (inorganic polyphosphate) is a polymer formed by P(i) residues linked by high-energy phosphoanhydride bonds. The presence of poly P in bacteria, fungi, algae and protists has been widely recognized, but the distribution of poly P in more complex eukaryotes has been poorly studied. In 14 tissues from uterine curettages from women with intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD) we found structures were discovered, which could easily be mistaken for actinomycotic sulphur granules. These were characterised by radial filamentous eosinophilic structures with peripheral club-like swellings. Twelve patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) suspected of dental restorative metal allergy were examined. All patients were patch tested with several metals including six different mercury compounds. To better characterize loop diuretic-sensitive ion fluxes in the inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) we examined them in IMCD cells grown as a primary culture on permeable supports. In the present investigation, electron probe X-ray microanalysis was used to characterize the effects of in vitro ouabain (2 mM) or anoxia on elemental composition (e.g. Na, K, Ca) and water content of rat peripheral (tibial) nerve myelinated axons and Schwann cells.
