Evaluating the FitMáx questionnaire for fitness-to-dive assessments in a military population.

This study evaluated the validity of the FitMáx questionnaire for estimating VO2peak in 157 Dutch Navy divers and recompression personnel, a population characterised by high physical fitness and occupational demands. While self-reported questionnaires offer a logistically feasible alternative to resource-intensive direct testing, their accuracy in fitness-to-dive assessments remains unclear. Participants completed the FitMáx questionnaire prior to cycle ergometry with direct VO2peak measurement. Results showed a moderate correlation (r = 0.631, P < 0.001) between mean estimated VO2max (43.7, S

Exercise modality influences oxygen pulse flattening during incremental cardiopulmonary exercise testing in healthy adults.

PURPOSE: To compare oxygen pulse (O₂P) responses during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in healthy adults using two ergometers, Treadmill and Cycle ergometer, and to determine the prevalence of O₂P flattening and the modality-specific characteristics of O₂P curve dynamics. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy adults (29.4 ± 6.9 years; 35% female) completed two maximal CPETs on both Cycle and Treadmill, in a random order within three weeks. O₂P flattening, defined as the absence of a further increase in O₂P despite increasing workload, was assessed visually and confirmed quantitatively. RESUL

Early Hemodynamic Changes following Surgical Ablation of the Right Greater Splanchnic Nerve for the Treatment of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction.

BACKGROUND: Permanent ablation of the right greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) has previously been demonstrated to improve quality of life and functional outcomes, as well as reduce abnormally high intracardiac filling pressures, in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) at 1, 3 and 12 months following the procedure. We hypothesize that hemodynamic changes that ensue from surgical right GSN ablation would be apparent as early as 24 h after the medical intervention. METHODS AND RESULTS: This is a prespecified analysis of a single-arm, two-center, open-label study eval

High-intensity exercise improves pulmonary function and exercise tolerance in a patient with TSC-LAM.

INTRODUCTION: While exercise has been shown to improve respiratory symptoms, exercise tolerance, and bone mineral density in many populations, no supervised exercise training interventions have been undertaken in patients with lymphangioleiomyo-matosis (LAM). MATERIAL AND METHODS: One patient with TSC-LAM (tuberous sclerosis complex lymphangioleiomyomatosis) participated in two weekly sessions (50-60 min) of supervised aerobic exercise at 80-85% heart rate max for one year. Treadmill ergometry (VO2peak), spirometry (FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, peak flow), and bone mineral density testing were perfor

Esmolol acutely alters oxygen supply-demand balance in exercising muscles of healthy humans.

Beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists (β blockers) reduce systemic O2 delivery and blood pressure (BP) during exercise, but the subsequent effects on O2 extraction within the active limb muscles are unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of the fast-acting, β1 selective blocker esmolol on systemic hemodynamics and leg muscle O2 saturation (near infrared spectroscopy, NIRS) during submaximal leg ergometry. Our main hypothesis was that esmolol would augment exercise-induced reductions in leg muscle O2 saturation. Eight healthy adults (6 men, 2 women; 23-67 year) performed light and moderate i

Arm Cycling Combined with Passive Leg Cycling Enhances VO2peak in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury Above the Sixth Thoracic Vertebra.

Objective: To test whether passive leg cycling (PLC) during arm cycling ergometry (ACE) affects peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) differently in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) at/above the 6th thoracic vertebra (T6) and below T6. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study, analyzed by univariate and multivariate regression models. Between- and within-group differences were examined during (a) ACE only, (b) ACE combined with PLC (ACE-PLC), and (c) ACE combined with functional electrical stimulation cycling (FES hybrid). Fifteen SCI subjects were recruited and grouped according to injur

Abnormal body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and muscle strength in pediatric SLE.

BACKGROUND: Children with SLE are known to have higher fat mass compared to their peers but there are no published data regarding exercise capacity as measured by cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength. In our pilot study of ten children with SLE, we sought to examine body composition, cardiovascular endurance, and isometric muscle strength. FINDINGS: Ten pediatric SLE patients were studied with a mean age of 15.5 years and 90 % female. Percent body fat above 30 %, the recommended normal level in adolescent females, were found in 89 % of female subjects and 40 % of all participants had

Pain and thermal sensation in the cold: the effect of interval versus continuous exercise.

Military and factory work often involves exposure to cold temperatures. With prolonged exposure, individuals report feeling cold and develop pain in their hands, both of which might be alleviated by endogenous heat production via exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how interval (INT) and continuous (CONT) cycle ergometry alter thermal sensation, hand pain, mean finger temperature, and skin surface temperature gradient (forearm-finger) following immobility in moderate cold. Fourteen young men underwent two trials (each was three total hours in 5°C) consisting of a 90-min period

Relationship between ammonia, heart rate, and exertion in McArdle's disease.

We studied plasma ammonia and exercise tolerance in six patients with McArdle's disease (myophosphorylase deficiency, type V glycogenosis) during incremental cycle ergometry. Tests were performed either in the postabsorptive state or after supplementation with branched-chain amino and 2-oxoacids and glucose. Glucose and branched-chain 2-oxoacid combined increased total work performed from control 49 +/- 22 to 80 +/- 36 kJ (P less than 0.05). Glucose alone also improved total work performed from 49 +/- 22 to 64 +/- 33 kJ (P less than 0.05). Branched-chain 2-oxoacids alone had a variable effect,

Exercise energy expenditure in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension: Impact on clinical severity and survival.

Patient with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension (IPAH) develop peripheral inefficiency which could lead to an increase total energy expenditure and that could have a significant prognostic impact. To test the hypothesis, fifty-five consecutive stable IPAH patients (mean age 51±17 years) and 24 matched controls underwent an incremental exercise test and followed for a 5 years' period. Total energy expenditure was assessed as the ratio between total [Formula: see text] uptake (during both effort and recovery) and total external work ( [Formula: see text] ). Patients with IPAH had a lower exercise
