Fear-related behaviors in situations of mass threat.

This Disaster Health Briefing focuses on the work of an expanding team of researchers that is exploring the dynamics of fear-related behaviors in situations of mass threat. Fear-related behaviors are individual or collective behaviors and actions initiated in response to fear reactions that are triggered by a perceived threat or actual exposure to a potentially traumatizing event. Importantly, fear-related behaviors modulate the future risk of harm. Disaster case scenarios are presented to illustrate how fear-related behaviors operate when a potentially traumatic event threatens or endangers t

Caloric restriction enhances fear extinction learning in mice.

Fear extinction learning, the ability to reassess a learned cue of danger as safe when it no longer predicts aversive events, is often dysregulated in anxiety disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's) enhance neural plasticity and their ability to enhance fear extinction learning may explain their anxiolytic properties. Caloric restriction (CR) has SSRI-like effects on neural plasticity and anxiety-related behavior. We implemented CR in mice to determine its effects on conditioned-fear responses. Wild type and serotonin transporter (SERT) knockout mice underwent CR for 7 days

[Reducing fear in preschool children receiving intravenous injections].

BACKGROUND & PROBLEM: Our pediatric medical ward administers an average of 80 intravenous injections to preschool children. We found that 91.1% exhibit behavior indicative of fear and anxiety. Over three-quarters (77.8%) of this number suffer severe fear and actively resist receiving injections. Such behavior places a greater than normal burden on human and material resources and often gives family members negative impressions that lower their trust in the healthcare service while raising nurse-patient tensions. Using observation and interviews, we found primary factors in injection fear to be

Fear of suffocation alters respiration during obstructed breathing.

We aimed to investigate whether fear of suffocation predicts healthy persons' respiratory and affective responses to obstructed breathing as evoked by inspiratory resistive loads. Participants (N = 27 women, ages between 18 and 21 years) completed the Fear of Suffocation scale and underwent 16 trials in which an inspiratory resistive load of 15 cmH(2)O/l/s (small) or 40 cmH(2)O/l/s (large) was added to the breathing circuit for 40 s. Fear of suffocation was associated with higher arousal ratings for both loads. Loaded breathing was associated with a decrease in minute ventilation, but progress

Durable effects of cognitive restructuring on conditioned fear.

Studies of cognitive reappraisal have demonstrated that reinterpreting a stimulus can alter emotional responding, yet few studies have examined the durable effects associated with reinterpretation-based emotion regulation strategies. Evidence for the enduring effects of emotion regulation may be found in clinical studies that use cognitive restructuring (CR) techniques in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to alleviate anxiety. These techniques are based on cognitive theories of anxiety that suggest these disorders arise from biased cognitions; therefore, changing a person's thoughts will elic

Behavioural memory reconsolidation of food and fear memories.

The reactivation of a memory through retrieval can render it subject to disruption or modification through the process of memory reconsolidation. In both humans and rodents, briefly reactivating a fear memory results in effective erasure by subsequent extinction training. Here we show that a similar strategy is equally effective in the disruption of appetitive pavlovian cue-food memories. However, systemic administration of the NMDA receptor partial agonist D-cycloserine, under the same behavioural conditions, did not potentiate appetitive memory extinction, suggesting that reactivation does n

Fear and disgust propensity in spider phobic distress.

Three studies examined associations between spider phobic distress and two individual difference characteristics, disgust propensity (sensitivity to disgust elicitation) and fear propensity (sensitivity to fear elicitation). Although the relative contributions of trait anxiety and disgust propensity have been examined, researchers have yet to compare the parallel constructs of disgust and fear propensity. Two studies examined associations cross-sectionally, and a third longitudinal study examined associations of fear and disgust propensity with changes in distress and avoidance over time. In t

Amygdala hyperfunction in phobic fear normalizes after exposure.

BACKGROUND: The amygdala is implicated as a key brain structure in fear processing. Studies exploring this process using the paradigm of fear conditioning have implicated the amygdala in fear acquisition and in generating behavioral fear responses. As such, fear extinction could be expected to induce a reduction in amygdala activity. However, exposure in specific phobia has never been shown persistently to reduce amygdala activity. METHODS: By means of event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, responses to phobia-related, general threat, and neutral pictures were measured before an

Public fear of vaccination: separating fact from fiction.

During the last two centuries, the world has seen a substantial increase in the number and availability of vaccines for the prevention of infectious disease. Smallpox vaccine remains the most celebrated vaccine-related achievement in human history, but worldwide reductions in many other diseases including measles, mumps, rubella, polio, diphtheria, and whooping cough (Bordetella pertussis) also illustrate the power of vaccination in controlling outbreaks of contagious diseases. Ironically, as advances in vaccination successfully limit disease outbreaks, the impact that these infectious agents

Dental fear and avoidance: causes, symptoms, and consequences.

A specialized community dental unit for dental fear treatment was used to investigate 160 adult patients. The patients, predominantly women 20 to 40 years old, had avoided regular dental care for an average of 16 years. Psychosocial and psychosomatic conditions were common. Dental fear generally had started in childhood (85%) and the dominating causative factor was previous traumatic dental experiences. For fear of early origin, the dentist's professional behavior was most important, whereas for fear acquired in adult years, pain was important. The most feared events in dentistry ranked by the

Phobic response factors from the fear survey schedule.

A Phobic Response Scale was factored from responses to the Fear Survey Schedule. Subjects were 137 male and 168 female college students. A six factor solution extracted 41.78% of the trace. The factors were as follows: I (Hostile-Dependence), II(Body assult), III (Developmental Fears), IV (Performance and Evaluation), V (Death Evasion), and VI (Nuisance Animals). An analysis of sex differences by item and scale generally supported and extended previous research. Some conceptual ties were made by scale to traditional phobic response styles and diagnostic categories.

Development and validation of the Measuring Needle Fear (MNF) screening tool for identification of needle fear in pre-dialysis and dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Needle fear is an under-recognised burden among haemodialysis recipients which can influence treatment choice and therapy engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a tool to identify needle fear in pre-dialysis or dialysis cohorts. METHODS: The Measuring Needle Fear (MNF) tool was developed using deductive and inductive methods, with items grouped into four domains to ensure comprehensive symptom coverage. Content validity was assessed using the Content Validity Index (CVI), and reliability using Gwet's AC1 coefficient and Cronbach's alpha. Exploratory facto

Effective connectivity in cortical and subcortical visual fear processing networks during fearful face viewing in body dysmorphic disorder.

Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) demonstrate emotional processing biases; however, it is unclear whether differences are related to visual fear procesing network dysfunction. Understanding neural connectivity patterns during visual processing of threatening stimuli could provide insights into mechanisms that maintain BDD symptoms. Participants with BDD (n = 32) and healthy controls (n = 37) completed a fearful face processing task during fMRI. Using dynamic causal modeling, we compared effective connectivity between groups in connections among regions implicated in fearful face

Associations of adverse childhood experiences with dental fear, and the mediating role of dental fear on caries experience: the Young-HUNT4 Survey.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may contribute to dental fear, which can negatively affect long-term oral health. We aimed to examine associations between specific and cumulative ACEs and dental fear in adolescents, investigate possible sex differences, and explore the potential mediating role of dental fear in the relationship between ACEs and caries experience. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5882 Norwegian adolescents aged 13-17 years from the Young-HUNT4 Survey in Norway. Self-reported ACEs (i.e., physical and sexual abuse, witnessing violence, parental divor

I Don't Want to Be Thin! Fear of Weight Change Is Not Just a Fear of Obesity: Research on the Body Mass Anxiety Scale.

Anxiety is one of the psychological factors associated with body weight experienced by people attempting to live up to expectations of an ideal body shape. The stigma of excessive or too low body weight and the stigmatization of people because of it is becoming a widespread problem with negative psychological and social consequences. One effect of the strong social pressure of beauty standards dependent on low body weight is the development of eating disorders and negative societal attitudes toward overweight or obese people. Research conducted to date has mainly focused on one dimension of we

Guided reactivation of personal phobic memories prior to exposure exercises prevents the renewal of fear responses in subjects with claustrophobic fears.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Basic research suggest behavioral strategies for interferencing the reconsolidation of fear memories to be a promising approach in reducing clinical fears. However, first clinical studies revealed mixed results highlighting the need to identify boundary conditions. We experimentally tested the specific hypothesis that post-retrieval threat exposure prevents context renewal usually observed in protocols without fear memory reactivation. METHODS: In a preliminary investigation forty-three individuals with claustrophobic fears reactivated the individual phobic memory o
