Tackling the Triple Threat in Kenya: Factors Associated with Protection against HIV Risk, Gender-Based Violence, and Pregnancy among Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

The government of Kenya's Triple Threat strategy recognises the need for urgent intervention to address the high incidence of HIV, gender-based violence (GBV) and pregnancy among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). We used nationally representative data among AGYW aged 13-24 (n = 1344) from the 2018-19 Kenya Violence Against Children & Youth Survey (VACS) in multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine associations between three potential protective factors - gender-equitable attitudes, food security and parental monitoring - and outcomes related to the triple threat: Intimate pa

The First Global Platform for Harmonized Dietary Data: Introducing the FAOSTAT Food and Diet Domain.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, the High-Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition highlighted persistent gaps in food consumption data and noted that policymakers are often unaware of existing but dispersed data sources. As part of its mandate, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collects, analyzes, and disseminates information related to nutrition, food, and agriculture. In 2024, FAO launched the FAOSTAT Food and Diet Domain (FDD) to help address these gaps by providing harmonized statistics from complementary sources of dietary data. OBJECTIVE: This paper des

Redistributing power in food systems: how community-led responses move from crisis buffering to systems transformation.

Food and nutrition insecurity in high‑income countries is increasingly persistent, driven by intersecting economic, social and environmental disruptions. In Australia, acute shocks such as the COVID‑19 pandemic, floods and bushfires, alongside chronic pressures including rising food prices, housing stress and concentrated corporate power, have exposed structural weaknesses in food access, governance and system resilience. This review examines how community‑led responses to food and nutrition insecurity function during disruption, whether they buffer short-term hardship or contribute to adaptiv

'When you go to bed, and you cannot sleep … ': smallholder farmers' experiences and perceptions of climate change events and their impacts on health in northern Ghana.

Despite the critical role of smallholder farmers in promoting food and nutrition security, research suggests that their health is severely threatened by experiences of climate change events. Our study assesses smallholder farmers' experiences and perceptions of rainfall, drought, flood, storm, and wildfire; and explores how such experiences impact food security and health. We employ the convergent mixed-method design, combining binomial regression analysis of survey data from a random-purposive sample of 1042 smallholder farmers with qualitative insights from inductive thematic analysis of dat

Rental assistance, housing insecurity, & well-being: Spillover effects of emergency rental assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to exacerbate housing insecurity among renters in the United States, with spillover effects on mental health and non-housing material hardships such as food insecurity. As one response to the potential crisis, the federal government implemented the $47 billion Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA) to stabilize rental housing through aid to vulnerable renter households. This study evaluates impacts of ERA on two non-housing outcomes, food insufficiency and psychological distress, using data from the Household Pulse Survey fielded by the U.S. Census Bureau. W

Food Insecurity and Food Worries During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Point-In-Time Study of Injured United States Veterans.

US Military Veterans experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to civilians, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Veterans is unclear. We conducted a nationwide survey of injured post-9/11 Veterans' food security, Coronavirus exposure, and nutrition habits. Of 193 Veterans, 63 (32.6%) were food insecure. Food insecurity was associated with Hispanic ethnicity (p = 0.02), prior homelessness (p = 0.003), combat service (p < 0.0001), and food-related worries (p = 0.003). Food insecure Veterans were more likely to report anxiety about stigma related to COVID-19 infection (p = 0.007)

Drought exposure and severe mental distress among adolescent girls and young women in Lesotho: the moderating role of food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: Climate-related shocks such as drought are increasingly recognised as threats to mental health, yet evidence remains limited on how these stressors affect adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Lesotho. This study examines the association between drought exposure and severe mental distress among AGYW in Lesotho and assesses whether household food insecurity moderates this relationship. METHODS: We analysed nationally representative cross-sectional data from 7,101 AGYW aged 13–24 years drawn from the 2018 Lesotho Violence Against Children and Youth Survey. Severe mental distress

Small but big player: the important role of microRNAs in rice.

Rice is a staple food for more than half of the global population. Research on rice crop establishment and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses helps enhance rice productivity and safeguard food security. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate diverse biological processes in rice, including growth, development, and stress resilience by modulating different target genes. They coordinate rice growth and development primarily through phytohormone signaling (abscisic acid, auxin, and gibberellin) and metabolic pathways (cell proliferation and fatty acid metabolism). Furthermore, they regulate rice stress

Modulating TPP riboswitch activity simultaneously enhances crop yield, nutritional quality and stress tolerance.

While enhancing crop yield remains a critical breeding objective, such efforts often compromise nutritional quality and stress tolerance. The growing global population and increasing environmental stresses make combining stable crop yields with improved nutritional quality a vital objective for sustainable food security. Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), the active form of vitamin B1, regulates core metabolism to support both human health and plant stress tolerances. Here, we show that editing the rice TPP riboswitch elevates multiple micronutrients, simultaneously increasing grain yield, cold tol
