Naturally occurring target-site EPSPS mutations and moderate EPSPS over-expression confer glyphosate resistance in Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum biotypes from Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Glyphosate resistance in Lolium perenne ssp. multiflorum (Italian ryegrass), a major weed in temperate cropping systems, threatens effective weed control and crop productivity. This study characterized the glyphosate response and target-site glyphosate resistance mechanisms in three biotypes (PA, MG and HE) from northwest Pampas region. RESULTS: The resistant biotypes exhibited significantly higher glyphosate median lethal dose (LD50) and dose to reduce growth rate by 50% (GR50) values, with resistance indices ranging from 5.5 to 9.3. Both resistant biotypes (MG and HE) displayed

Smartphone-based visual quantitation of glyphosate in liquid media using effervescent colorimetric tablets encompassing Ru-doped MOF with augmented enzyme-like activity.

Although glyphosate is widely applied as a non-selective herbicide in agricultural production, its rapid and on-site monitoring remains challenging. Building upon magnetic effervescent tablets (METs) previously developed by our group, we designed novel METs-based colorimetric tablets (MCTs) using Ru-doped Fe-MOF (Ru40/Fe-MOF) with significantly enhanced peroxidase-mimetic activity. MCTs were integrated with smartphone-based digital-image chromogenesis (SDC) for visual quantitation of glyhosate in surface waters and liquid drinks. Ru-doping not only increased the specific surface area and regul

Association between glyphosate exposure and cognitive function, depression, and neurological diseases in a representative sample of US adults: NHANES 2013-2014 analysis.

Glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide globally, has been linked to neurological impairments in some occupational studies. However, the potential neurotoxic effects of glyphosate exposure in the general population are still not fully understood. We conducted analyses on existing data collected from 1532 adults of the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to explore the possible relationship between glyphosate exposure and cognitive function, depressive symptoms, disability, and neurological medical conditions. Our results showed a significant negative associat

Coenzyme Q10 protects against glyphosate-based herbicide-induced testicular and sperm toxicity by modulating Nrf2/Keap1/HO-1 and TLR4/NF-κB pathways.

Roundup, the most widely used glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH), contains glyphosate (GLY) as its main active ingredient and was used to model GBH-induced reproductive toxicity in this study. We aimed to investigate the protective effect of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) against GLY-induced testicular and sperm damage, focusing on oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Unlike previous studies, this work provides the first integrated evidence combining histopathological, biochemical, hormonal, and molecular assessments with functional sperm analyses, and uniquely demonstrates how CoQ10 modulates b

Co-exposure of iron oxide nanoparticles with glyphosate herbicides in Poecilia reticulata: Fish liver damages is reversible during iron accumulation and elimination period.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are advanced materials for water remediation technologies. It is therefore relevant to evaluate the cellular and tissue behavior of fishes in response to IONPs and their associations with agrochemicals such as glyphosate (GLY) and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs). Iron accumulation, tissue integrity and lipid distribution in the hepatocytes of Poecilia reticulata (guppy) were investigated in a control group and in groups exposed to soluble iron ions, namely IFe (0.3 mgFe/L), IONPs (0.3 mgFe/L), and IONPs, associated with GLY (0.65 mg/L), GBHs 0.65 mgGLY/L (IO

Antioxidant efficiency is associated with differential susceptibility to oxidative damage and senescence progression in dermal and lung fibroblasts exposed to occupationally relevant glyphosate concentrations.

Glyphosate potential to induce cellular senescence remains an overlooked aspect of its cytotoxicity mechanism. We investigated glyphosate impact on oxidative and senescence markers in lung and dermal fibroblasts. Primary fibroblasts cultured in the absence or presence of 0.59 and 1.66 µM glyphosate were analyzed after the first (P1) and tenth (P10) passages. Upon glyphosate treatment, protein antioxidant capacity (PAC) was upregulated and cell viability to H2O2 challenge was reduced in P1 and P10 fibroblasts. Non-protein antioxidant capacity (NPAC) was down-regulated, while malondialdehyde, pr

Dairy manure, glyphosate, and antimicrobials (copper, streptomycin, and triazole) modulated the composition of antimicrobial resistance at the gene and microbial levels in a processing tomato field.

Intensive pesticide use drives antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in agriculture, yet the effects of specific practices remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impact of dairy manure and agrochemicals (glyphosate, copper, streptomycin, and propiconazole) on the composition of culturable AMR bacteria (CARB), AMR genes (ARGs; n = 87), and the microbiome in a processing tomato field (n = 64 experimental plots). Glyphosate-treated plots harbored the lowest levels of CARB, but the highest prevalence of ARGs (especially tetA, tetB, OXA-50, and OXA-58) in the tomato leaves (P < 0.05). Manure-t

Hazard assessment using an in-silico toxicity assessment of the transformation products of boscalid, pyraclostrobin, fenbuconazole and glyphosate generated by exposure to an advanced oxidative process.

Agricultural pesticide use is ongoing and consumer concern regarding the safety of pesticide residues on produce has generated interest in techniques that can safely reduce residues post-harvest. Recently an advanced oxidative process has shown promise in substantial residue reduction on the surface of produce. Given the potential for oxidative transformation of pesticides to generate transformation products with greater toxicity than the parent residue, take for example the oxon products of the organophosphorus insecticides, it is important to consider what transformation products are generat

Hepatoprotective Potential of Eugenol Against Pesticide Glyphosate-Induced Liver Injury via Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling and Modulation of Apoptosis and Inflammation in Rats.

Glyphosate (GLY) is a widely used herbicide active ingredient applied in agricultural, residential, and public areas. Although the European Chemicals Agency has stated that current evidence is insufficient to classify GLY as an endocrine disruptor, increasing experimental data indicate that GLY may induce organ toxicity. This study aimed to investigate glyphosate-induced liver toxicity and to evaluate the potential protective effects of eugenol in a rat model. Eugenol is a phenolic compound predominantly found in clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum L.) and is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflamm

Glyphosate induces intestinal inflammatory injury associated with mitochondrial-lysosomal dysfunction, cGAS-STING activation, and pyroptosis-related responses in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.).

Glyphosate (GLY) poses a potential risk to fish health, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying GLY-induced intestinal injury remain unclear. This study established in vivo (common carp midgut) and in vitro (EPC cells) models to investigate the toxic effects of GLY. We evaluated ROS production, mitochondrial and lysosomal function, autophagic flux, cGAS-STING signaling, and pyroptosis via histology, fluorescence staining, RT-qPCR, and western blotting. Both in vivo and in vitro results showed that GLY exposure markedly increased ROS production, induced mitochondrial damage and lysosomal dysfun

Do commonly used herbicides (atrazine and glyphosate) have the potential to impair the contractions, prostaglandin releasing and conducting of oxytocin signal at the bovine cervix in vitro?

Glyphosate (Gly) and atrazine (Atr) are among the most commonly used herbicides in global agriculture. It was previously shown that both Atr and Gly impair the ovarian and uterine secretion of regulators of myometrial motility (oxytocin (OT) or prostaglandins (PGs)) in cows, and Atr can also decrease the force of contractions in strips from the uterine horn. Hence, the aim of this study was to compare the effects of Atr and Gly on the motor and secretory function of the bovine cervix in vitro as well as receptivity and signal transduction in cervical cell cultures. Cervical strips or cells obt

Glyphosate-Induced Metabolic and Immune Modulation in Hepatoma Cells: Identification of Key Genes as Diagnostic and Therapeutic Targets Using an In Silico Systems Biology Approach.

Glyphosate, one of the most widely used herbicides worldwide, has raised significant concerns regarding its potential involvement in hepatotoxicity and molecular changes associated with liver cancer biology. These concerns highlight the need to better understand its underlying molecular mechanisms in hepatoma cells. Emerging evidence suggests that glyphosate exposure may increase the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease. However, the precise molecular alterations and promising biomarkers associated with glyphosate-induced hepatic toxicity and disease remain largely unexplored. In thi

A novel Cu(II)-assisted peptide fluorescent probe for highly sensitive detection of glyphosate in real samples: real application in test strips and smartphone.

Glyphosate (Glyp) is an organophosphorus herbicide, and its abuse causes potential harm to the environment and human health. Thus, the development of simple and portable methods for rapid and visual detection of glyphosate is of great importance. Herein, we successfully developed a new fluorescent probe L with dansyl fluorophore as a fluorescent dye and tetrapeptide (Ala-Ser-Arg-His-NH2) as a recognition group. According to the design, L exhibited a specific fluorescence quenching response to Cu2+ and formed an L-Cu2+ ensemble with a molecular ratio of 2:1, demonstrating a limit of detection (
