[The role of therapeutic exercises in the combined treatment and rehabilitation of patients with pain syndrome associated with the dysfunction of temporomandibular joint].

In a group of patients with pain syndrome associated with the dysfunction of temporomandibular joint positive results of combined therapy and rehabilitative treatment including remedial gymnastics persisted significantly longer than in controls (p < 0.01). Results of long-term follow-up confirmed the desirability of rehabilitation based on therapeutic exercises. This approach permits to enhance the effectiveness of therapy and rehabilitation of patients with pain syndrome associated with the dysfunction of temporomandibular joint, reduce the number of the patients' visits for repeated treatmen

[Orthodontic treatment in mouth breathing].

Patients with severe alterations of the maxillary growth pattern, due to long term predominant oral respiration, primarily need orthopaedic appliances, rather than common orthodontic mechanics. In cases of maxillary transversal deficiency, rapid expansion is indicated to recover an adequate width. Such treatment improves the ability for nasal ventilation. When the maxilla is sagittally underdeveloped, a facial mask is used to protract the entire maxilla. Other ways of treatment include oral screens, partial glossectomy, myofunctional therapy and respiratory gymnastics. Finally orthodontic trea

Recurrence of Scaphoid Stress Fracture: A Case Report.

Background  Scaphoid stress fractures are rare and typically present in young, elite male athletes. Due to the infrequency in which these injuries are encountered, the optimum management is not established. Case Description  We present the case of a 20-year-old male gymnast with bilateral stress fractures of the scaphoid waist. Following conservative treatment, clinical and radiological signs of union were seen bilaterally. Eight months after return to normal activities, a unilateral recurrence of the stress fracture occurred. This was successfully treated with internal fixation and bone graft

Imaging the Injured Pediatric Athlete: Upper Extremity.

Increased physical activity in childhood has resulted in a large number of sports-related injuries. Although there is overlap between the sports-related injuries seen in pediatric and adult patients, important differences exist in the injury patterns of pediatric patients. These differences are related to the continuous changes in the developing skeleton and its relationship with adjacent soft tissues. The imbalance in strength between the growing bones and the nearby tendons and ligaments makes the bones prone to acute and chronic injuries. Acute injuries are more common in contact sports suc

Rupture of the long head biceps tendon treated with tenodesis to the coracoid process. Results at more than 30 years.

We evaluated patients at very long term with rupture of the long head biceps tendon (LHBT) in whom the tendon stump had been sutured to the coracoid tip (Gilcreest technique). Our aim was to determine the natural history of shoulders deprived of the LHBT and to assess the validity of the surgical technique. Between 1969 and 1981, 30 patients with rupture of the LHBT and no evidence of cuff tear underwent the Gilcreest operation. The mean age of the patients was 32 years (range, 20-49). Six of them were professional gymnasts. The 28 patients that could be traced were evaluated a mean of 31 year

[Recurrent sciatica caused by "conjoined nerve roots". Diagnosis, therapy, follow-up].

This study reports about 10 patients, with low back pain and sciatica caused by conjoined nerve roots. The described nerve root anomaly could produce sciatica even without the presence of a disc prolaps or another impingement. On computed tomography it is difficult to distinguish conjoined nerve roots from a disc prolaps. Two of these patients have been operated, eight of them have had conservative treatment. Our experiences show that the best results could be achieved with conservative treatment, especially with stabilising gymnastics and with transcutaneous nerve stimulation.

[Closed intramedullary osteosynthesis of the femur in isolated and combined trauma].

The authors have analysed the results of the treatment of 329 patients with closed diaphyseal fractures of the femur; in 252 of them various types of osteosynthesis have been made. Preference was given to closed osteosynthesis with a massive metal rod and drilling out of the medullary canal of the femur. It is pointed out that with this method of treatment the duration of disability was the lowest possible, and there was no invalidity. The necessity of exercise therapy and isometric gymnastics during the early postoperative period is stressed.

Standardized vs. Relative Intensity in CrossFit.

CrossFit is characterized by being a standardized training program that improves physical performance through the provision of several stimuli regardless of the participant's strength level. This study aimed to compare the acute response in total repetitions as a measurement of performance, jump ability, physiological demand (heart rate and blood lactate), and perceived effort considering the participants' strength level with individualized intensity in CrossFit. Thirty-five participants were assessed and asked to participate on two separate days in a standardized and relative 'As Many Repetit

Dynamic scapholunate dissociation in a child.

We describe a case of dynamic scapholunate dissociation in a skeletally immature ten-year-old girl. The patient presented for pain in the anatomical snuffbox and swelling over the dorsum of the wrist and hand. Standard static and dynamic radiographs of the wrist did not reveal any pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging was inconclusive. The scapholunate dissociation was diagnosed by wrist arthroscopy, reduced, and stabilised using standard techniques. Full and pain-free motion of the wrist was restored.

Pediatric Elbow and Wrist Pathology Related to Sports Participation.

Pediatric overuse injuries are becoming more prevalent in today's society with more children competitively playing year-round sports at a younger age. The importance of prompt diagnosis and treatment is paramount to the treatment for these injuries, second only to rest and activity modification. This article will focus on overuse injuries of the upper extremity, specifically: little league elbow, elbow osteochondritis dissecans, and gymnast wrist. It will also discuss the pathophysiology, diagnosis, imaging, and treatment of each of these entities.

Injuries about the distal ulna in children.

This article examines several types of injuries about the distal ulna that appear in children. Ulnar styloid fractures are relatively common and tend not to have the deforming potential of Salter-Harris-type injuries. Physeal injuries with their potential for long-term growth impairment and functional limitation are potentially the most serious. Chronic stress injuries at the distal ulna, as seen in competitive gymnasts, and chronic late disruption of the distal radio-ulnar joint are also discussed.

An Exploratory Analysis of Postural Stability in Acrobatic Shoulder-Stand Pyramids Using Inertial Sensors: The Interplay of Top-Athlete's Variations and Base-Athlete's Stance Configurations.

In static acrobatic gymnastics pyramids, maintaining stability in a multi-person system is critical, yet unconstrained floor baselines and base-to-top pairing mechanics remain poorly quantified. This study evaluated postural stability in shoulder-stand pyramids, examining the interplay of two specific top-athlete variations (lighter Pyramid T1 vs. heavier Pyramid T2) and base-athlete stances (parallel vs. tandem). Five elite base-athletes were monitored while supporting two top-athlete variations, a lighter (Pyramid T1) and a heavier (Pyramid T2) during a standard static shoulder-stand pyramid
